*HOW DO WE ELIMINATE MAJOR KARMIC OBSTACLES?* *ELIMINATION WILL TAKE ON A SPEEDIER RATE WITH A HIGHER STATE OF MIND*

Caller: Master Lu, is it true that major karmic obstacles are in fact not easy to eliminate? Am I right to say that it takes a person’s sincere repentance, coupled with his persistent efforts in performing recitation of mantras, and not forgetting having to undergo a certain part of its retribution before it can be fully eliminated?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right.

Caller: It is crucial that one has to suffer its retribution?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. This is a very good question, young lady. You are very smart. When one has created some negative karmas in the past, of which the retribution has not taken place; if he continues to do more evil, it is equivalent to accruing more negative karmas. Let me quote you an example. There is virus in your computer, if you do not get rid of the virus, and it has been further infested with new virus, it is when the amount of viruses goes out of control, that’s when your computer will crash.

Caller: I understand, Master Lu. It is important for us to elevate our state of mind, only then we are able to transform the power of karma, cause and effect at its core. Anything less, will be considered as superficial efforts, am I right?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. You are very smart, young lady.

Caller: Furthermore, if one’s state of mind is elevated quickly enough, his karmic obstacles will be eliminated at an even speedier rate. Is that the case?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure. Let me ask you. When an airplane first started to take-off, its speed is slow, right? The higher it flies, the faster it is, right? When your state of mind is high, don’t you think your progress will be faster?

Caller: That’s right.

*WHEN REACHING A PLATEAU IN CULTIVATION, INCREASE RECITATION OF *_GREAT COMPASSION MANTRA_* AND _*HEART SUTRA*_ *IN HOMEWORK*

Caller: At times, cultivators who have been practising for 3- 5 years feel they have reached a plateau in their cultivation. Under such circumstances, is it right to increase the recitation of _*Great Compassion Mantra*_ and _*Heart Sutra*_ to 49 times in their homework to help them gain wisdom and improvement more easily?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Recite more of _*Heart Sutra*_. Do not reduce its recitation. It is fine to recite more of both _*Heart Sutra*_ and _*Great Compassion Mantra*_. One should just be more cautious with the number of recitation for _*Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Da Chan Hui Wen)*_.

[emoji92]RECITATION OF EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE TEXT (LIFO)[emoji92]

It is about the part of reciting Buddhas’ names in theEighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance Text.
For the first 53 Buddhas, we should recite their names in a respectful manner.

From “Na Mo Shi Jia Mou Ni Fo” (i.e., Shakyamuni Buddha南无释迦牟尼佛) onwards:

If you are reciting in sitting position, you should perform a deep bow when reciting the name of each Buddha.

If you want to show your utmost respect and make your recitation more efficacious, you should kneel and bow, touching your forehead to the floor.

Because these 35 Buddhas are Buddhas of Merit and Virtue, we will be able to receive merit and virtue if we pay our respects by bowing this way. It is very efficacious.

*ARE WE ABLE TO BRING PHOTOS OF FAMILY MEMBERS TO DHARMA CONVENTIONS SO AS TO PRAY FOR BLESSINGS FROM BODHISATTVAS?*

Caller: Master Lu, will it affect Master if we bring many photos with us to attend Dharma convention? Reason being at times, there are people who brought photos of their entire family, including grandparents, parents, etc., is this alright?

Master Jun Hong Lu: With the blessings from so many Bodhisattvas, that is fine. But just that you do not bring photos of every family member. If you do that, the Dharma conventions will be filled with people holding multiple photos in future. Wouldn't it be very unsightly? Haha.

Caller: That's true.

Master Jun Hong Lu: There are some who depends on his personal influence. The fact is, the implication for a person to bring others’ photos with him is that he will have to bear their karmic consequences. You may bring photos of those whom you feel strongly that you have to, even if it means having to bear their negative karma. If you simply bring photos of anyone in general, you are bound to bear their karma.

*CULTIVATE DHARMA IN A PRACTICAL WAY; HELP OTHERS AS WE PRACTISE ALONG*

Caller: Master Lu, we have been cultivating for a long time and wondering whether we could use our thousand days of cultivation in a momentary situation. Under normal circumstances when there are no problems, we seemed to understand all the values of cultivation. However, when a situation arises, we will discover that our cultivation is really not up to the mark and we even develop bad thoughts such as jealousy and so on. Master, please enlighten us, is this just a normal little test for us to gauge our cultivation level? How can we heal from the roots?

Master Lu: It is very simple. When a person does not cultivate thoroughly, although you feel that you understand the cultivation very well and able to deliver verbally just as well, but, in practice, this does not mean that you have fully understood it. Similarly, when we are abroad, you would need work experience even after you have graduated; in other words, your work experience is necessary. Just like university graduates working in the banks, will they be able to work immediately? They will still need to gain work experiences. Therefore, you need to be practical when cultivating Dharma. Today, you are practising Dharma and thinking that you know everything about it, “I want to be harmonious, I want to be tolerant….” When you are not in contact with people, you would not know what is being harmonious and tolerant. Then one day when you quarrelled with someone, your anger and hatred start to surface; you do not understand the meaning of harmony and tolerance. In reality, at this juncture, you have failed your Dharma cultivation because you have not practised your Dharma cultivation practically. Therefore, while practising Dharma, you have to step out to offer your help and keep in touch with people and apply different levels of tolerance and harmony to different kinds of people. This is called practical cultivation.

(Question 119)

*MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION AND SHIFTING HOUSE NOT ADVISABLE FOR ELDERLY PERSON*

Question: A dharma friend’s brother went along with his father's suggestion to rebuild their old mansion. After doing so, it seemed that not only his brother’s career became unfavorable, but also incurred a large sum of debts. His family met with major setbacks and was wrecked. He was under so much pressure from the aggressive debt collectors that the thought of jumping to his death often haunts him. What should he do?

Answer: For elderly person, it is best not to perform major reconstruction or to shift house. In fact, any elderly above the age of seventy should not be shifting house as it can cost them their lives as soon as they do it. This is because any piece of land would have its local deities, in addition to those ancestors who had passed away on the land, all of whom may come after the person. As such, old mansions should not be disturbed. Some of those who did so, or digged their ancestral tomb experienced a series of deaths in the family.

Should this ever happen, the person must repent for his wrongdoing. For non-dharma practitioner, he would meet major trouble. Cases of this nature require a minimum recitation of 108 times of *_88 Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Da Chan Hui Wen)._*

*DO NOT LIVE BY MERE LUCK*

The journey of life is impermanent, so is life and death. A person should not live by mere luck. It is often mentioned in the Sutra, “there are tens of thousands of calamities”, one would expect insurmountable calamities in a lifetime. Only a person who performs acts of kindness and accumulates merits, are able to evade these adversities. As indicated in the traditional Chinese culture “a single act of kindness is able to eliminate hundreds of calamities”.

*PLACING LANDSCAPE PAINTING OF WATER AND MOUNTAINS ON WALL*

Caller: Master Lu, can we place two landscape paintings of smaller sizes, side by side on a wall?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Sure you can.

Caller: Master Lu had mentioned before that there shouldn't be more than eight landscape paintings within a house. There are many Dharma friends who are currently staying in rented places. For those who only rent a room, could they place a piece of landscape painting each on the four walls?

Master Jun Hong Lu: No problem. Since that is your rented room, it's solely up to you on how you want to place them.
