*VIRTUE IS GIVING OTHERS HOPE*

Someone once asked me, “What is Virtue?”  Let me tell you that virtue is giving others hope, in other words, imparting wisdom to others.  Virtue is not an external pursuit.  It originates intrinsically from our compassionate nature, which develops into selfless love for all sentient beings, with the aim of helping people in this world.

Buddhist practitioners shall sow seeds extensively in the field of merits and diligently cultivate wisdom to accomplish the true purpose of life.  The cultivation of both merits and wisdom is essential in practising Dharma.  This is because merits and wisdom are just like a pair of aircraft wings.  An aircraft could not take off when either of its wings is absent.  Therefore, a blessed man certainly possesses wisdom, while a wise man is certainly blessed.  So, let’s create a true life of Dharma through the cultivation of mind, merits and wisdom.

Caller: If we repent of our wrongdoing, and use the case as a lesson for others, will the meritorious blessings be enormous?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure. The fact that you use the case as a lesson for others, and as a result, they have benefited from it, gained wisdom, and embarked on the path of cultivation, it goes without saying that your meritorious blessings will be boundless.

【梦到穿的衣服很难看,说明业障重】

女听众:一个同修梦到其他人对他说他穿的衣服都很难看,这是什么意思?

台长答:如果人家梦见他穿的衣服很难看,那就说明他自己身上业障还是很重。穿的衣服就是他的业障,穿得好,就是业障轻;穿得不好,让人家看了很讨厌,那不就是像生活当中的习惯一样?你的习惯给人家看了很不好,你是不是有业障?你的习惯很好,人家都很爱你,是不是衣服“哎哟,你穿得真好看,我真喜欢这件衣服”,是不是身上有好习惯?是不是业障就轻了?(对)

PUTTING ON UNSIGHTLY CLOTHES IN A DREAM INDICATES KARMA IS HEAVY

Caller: A fellow practitioner dreamt that other people told him that the clothes he wore looked awful. What does this mean?

Master Jun Hong Lu: If other people dreamt of his clothes looking ugly on him; that means that his karma is heavy. The clothes worn in the dream are used to represent his karmic debts. Being well-dressed indicates that our karma is light, whereas unsightly outfits, like lifestyle habits, will leave a bad impression on others. Is this not your karma? People will love you when you display good habits, “Gosh, your outfit is so nice, I love your attire”. Is this not a good lifestyle habit and is this not showing that you have lighter karma?

*DREAMT ABOUT MESSAGES SENT FROM GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA RECITE THE THREE “PILLARS” OF SCRIPTURES FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO LAY A SOLID FOUNDATION*

Caller: A Buddhist practitioner dreamt about messages sent from Guan Yin Bodhisattva compassionately: As soon as you wake up in the morning, perform your daily recitation and start with the Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra, and the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance. Building these three pillars to lay a solid foundation. As for the other mantras, you can recite later or while traveling.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Exactly! As the saying goes, “A day’s plan starts with early morning”. You should perform recitation of the three “pillars” earnestly in the morning. It would be good if you could recite at least once when there wasn’t enough time.

Caller: Master Lu has mentioned previously that due to time constraints, we could recite part of the three “pillars” in the morning, then complete the recitation of the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance after returning home in the evening, is that correct?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, it is correct.

*LEARNING BUDDHISM WHOLEHEARTEDLY, DILIGENTLY AND GENUINELY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: A lot of people learn Buddhism throughout their lifetime. However, they do not know what actually are they practising in the end. They are just putting on an act as a Buddhist practitioner to gain the respect of others. They are simply trying to fish for compliments and this is sheer self-deception. I hope that all of you learn Buddhism wholeheartedly, diligently and genuinely. Very genuinely. One must be genuine when it comes to Buddhism learning so as to achieve the desired state.

*WHICH METHOD IS MORE EFFECTIVE IN GAINING WISDOM, “PERFORMING RECITATION” OR OBSERVING “PRECEPTS, SAMADHI AND WISDOM”?*

Caller: We know that there are two approaches in gaining wisdom, that is, through performing recitation and through observing “precepts, samadhi and wisdom”. Of these two approaches, which is more effective?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course, it is observing “precepts, samadhi and wisdom”. It is faster to gain wisdom through observing precepts and samadhi. This is because you are well aware of the “Do’s and Don’ts”. As you develop your morality by adhering to the precepts, your mind will become more easily controlled, enabling you to develop your power of concentration. With the development of concentration, wisdom will arise.
Performing recitation, on the other hand, relies on the Bodhisattva to bless you with a little more wisdom. However, if you do not observe the precepts and abstain from committing unwholesome acts, the Bodhisattva will not be able to grant you wisdom even if you perform recitation.

Caller: Understood. As an example, when we are troubled by something, reciting the _*Heart Sutra*_ many times can only help us to gain wisdom at that very moment, meaning that it’s only temporarily. Is that right?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. Also, wisdom may not necessarily arise at that moment. Let me give you an example, after reciting the _*Heart Sutra*_, many people would start to think, “Hey, perhaps I should listen to Master Jun Hong Lu’s “Buddhism in Plain Terms” radio program. In this case, it is the Bodhisattva who has guided him to listen to “Buddhism in Plain Terms” in order to help him gain wisdom. Reciting scriptures may not be able to help you think something through immediately. It works by channelling us to some other means to solve our issues. It is like when we are ill and Guan Yin Bodhisattva would help us find a good doctor for our treatment.

*HOW DO WE CHOOSE WHEN WE ARE FACED WITH MANY OPTIONS IN LIFE?*

Caller: Master, you mentioned before that life is about choices. And, oftentimes, to make a choice, it requires wisdom. At times, we are in a position where our state of mind is being put to the test. Due to lack of wisdom, it may appear that all options look equally appealing. How do we go about making a choice under such circumstances? Master, please enlighten us.

Master Jun Hong Lu: When it comes to choices, there are many types. There are some that you make based on your conscience. There are others that are made based on your inherent nature. The true choice is a choice made based on your Buddha nature. So, never make any choice that is against your conscience, no matter how advantageous it may appear to you. Conversely, if the matter in hand benefits sentient beings, though it may not appear to be advantageous to you, you may make that choice. Any choice made based on your Buddha nature will assure you of karmic rewards in the future. On the contrary, if you make one based on selfishness, though you may reap immediate rewards, you will surely pay a high price in the future.

Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door propagates traditional Chinese Culture, inheriting the essence of Buddhism and spreading it far and wide. It advocates that Buddhists around the world recite the Buddhist scriptures (namely, the Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra, the Eighty-Eighty Buddhas Great Repentance, and the Ten Short Mantras) in order to enhance their spiritual and physical well-being. *HOW TO DO SELF-REFLECTION?*

Caller: How do we share with fellow practitioners on initiating self-reflection and self-check regularly in their daily life? This happened to be something I wish to learn too, to avoid inflation of ego and going astray.

Master Jun Hong Lu: How do we do self-reflection? It is very simple. Let me ask you, how do we maintain our self-hygiene? You wash your face and brush your teeth every morning, don’t you? The same goes, we should do regular self-reflection. Every day before you offer incense and perform recitation of scriptures, do a personal self-reflection: Did I do any wrong today? Was I overcome by greed today? Was I ignorant today? Did I have any grievances today? Did I hurt anyone today? Was I able to practise endurance of humiliation today…think about all these. Have I emulated Bodhisattva today? This is what self-reflection is all about. Do it twice a day, it is the same principle as saying a prayer or repenting in many western religions.
