*DISCOURSE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECTING ONE’S BAD HABITS / MISTAKES*

Master Jun Hong Lu:
Dear listeners and friends, please remember, it’s difficult to kick one’s bad habits, but if there’s no pain, there will be no gain.

Many bad habits were developed when we were young and it becomes harder to change over time. When one dislikes being taken advantage of when one is young, the feeling will intensify as one grows older. Eventually, one will find oneself in a dire state.

As humans, we have to learn to correct our mistakes. We have to admit our mistakes as long as we are in the wrong. Do not be caught up in any justifications you may have, trying to redeem yourself for the mistakes you made. Admit your mistakes instantaneously to avoid a downward spiral that will lead to more mistakes.

Trying to deny your mistakes will only jeopardize your health and hurt others. It also shows that you are incorrigible. At times, matters could arise as a result of Karma. Thus, it’s pointless trying to find a reasonable explanation. If you have bullied someone in your previous life, you are bound to be bullied by that person in this life. This is the logic of the fact. I hope everyone can learn from it.

*HOW TO IMMERSE OUR HEARTS INTO THE SCRIPTURES DURING RECITAITONS*

Caller: Master Lu ever said that we have to immerse our hearts into the scriptures whenever we perform recitations. Please enlighten us on how do we achieve it, Master Lu.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Listen with your ears. For example, listen to your voice when you are reciting. However, many people will fall asleep quickly while listening to their own voice. It is alright to fall asleep, just continue to recite when you are awake. Listen to your voice as you recite.

Caller: Okay, thank you Master Lu for answering my question.

*ARE WE ABLE TO PERFORM RECITATIONS WHEN SEATED NEXT TO PEOPLE WHO ARE EATING NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD*

Caller: Master Lu, are we able to perform recitations if people consuming non-vegetarian food are seated next to us and we are able to smell their food?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is best not to recite. Stay further away; move to a further end.

Caller: What if we enter a non-vegetarian restaurant? Should we avoid recitations as well?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Recite in silent. Do not open your mouth and do not recite aloud.

*WEAKNESSES IN CHARACTER – ARE THEY CAUSED BY KARMIC OBSTACLES FROM PREVIOUS LIFE?*

Caller: Weaknesses in one’s character, including committing unwholesome verbal act, being petty or getting jealous easily; are these considered as karmic obstacles from previous life?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is related to both previous and present life. For example, if a person is born to be petty by nature; the pettier he gets, the more things will go against his will and consequently he will become pettier – forming a vicious cycle. Therefore, it is related to both previous and present life.

Caller: Can he rely on _*Heart Sutra*_, _*Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance*_ and _Little Houses_ to resolve it?

Master Jun Hong Lu: With more recitations, one will be able to change his destiny and character.

*ONCE YOU RECEIVE MONEY FOR THE BOOKS GIVEN TO OTHERS, IT IS CONSIDERED AS EXPLOITING RELIGION FOR MONEY*

Caller: During the process of helping others, one of our fellow practitioners was distributing Dharma books and ritual implements to others for free of charge. Some people did not want to take things for free and insisted on paying for the books and ritual implements. As such, they have given most of the money to him and he will be using it for printing books or…

Master Jun Hong Lu: This is already considered as exploiting religion for money. One should never, ever receive money that he isn’t supposed to receive! This is called exploiting religion for money if he receives the money eventually.
