*DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WE DO*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As the saying goes, ‘great undertakings have small beginnings, and difficult tasks are tackled from where it is easy’. After all, even a large tree has the origins of a small sapling; a high platform is constructed piece by piece; and walking a thousand miles would not be possible without that first step forward.

Indeed, all who have accomplished great undertakings did so bit by bit. Hence, do not refuse to do something because you perceive it to be insignificant as the accumulation of these acts can give rise to something important.

In any domain, as long as you persist in putting ten thousand hours of deliberate practice, you could become an expert regardless of the field. Likewise for Buddhism studies, it is our daily recitation and spiritual cultivation that forms the foundation of Buddhahood.

*RECITING EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE (LIFO) CAN ELIMINATE KARMIC OBSTACLES*

Question: Why Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance (LIFO) is effective for eliminating karmic obstacles?

Answer: LIFO is an extremely important mantra. There are a great number of Bodhisattvas mentioned in this mantra. Hence, whenever you pray to each Bodhisattva to seek repentance, each of them will help you eliminate your karmic obstacles. Thus, do not be hasty in your recitation. There are some who fail to articulate the names of the Bodhisattvas in full during recitation – in such case, how will elimination of karmic obstacles be possible?

*ONE SHOULD NOT PERFORM GOOD DEEDS WITH THE INTENT TO COVER UP HIS OWN WRONGDOINGS*

Caller: A Buddhist practitioner is in debt. In the event that he has money to perform life liberation, but is not repaying his debt, is the virtuous achievement gained through performing life liberation considered perfect?

Master Jun Hong Lu: He should repay a portion of his outstanding debt while setting aside some for life liberation. One should not perform good deeds with the intent to cover up their his wrongdoings. The motivation behind such acts is improper.

*MERITS FROM GIVING THE TEACHINGS OF BUDDHA (DHARMA DANA)*

Caller: I wish to better my self-cultivation and to dedicate myself to progress. Though I do not perform much life liberation, I do my utmost to help others awaken spiritually, and with every person I helped, I will tell him to “refrain from the act of killing, not to consume live creatures and to be a vegetarian on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar calendar months”.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right.

Caller: Does this measure up to the merits from performing life liberation? Or…?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The merits are even greater! This is because the Dharma Dana is the greatest among the three types of Dana; the other two being Wealth Dana and Fearlessness Dana.

*LEARN TO CONTROL OUR EMOTIONS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Our emotions are just like temperature, constantly in flux. Hence, we must learn to control our emotions. Although how we feel does not equate to who we are, our emotions may sometimes dictate our lives. Should our negative emotions not receive proper and speedy remedy, we will only dwell increasingly deeper in depressive thoughts and gradually be unable to think things through. Eventually, this will result in us losing control over our emotions, doing things that may hurt ourselves and others, culminating in serious depression.

*THE MORE WE GIVE, THE MORE WE RECEIVE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The more we give, the more we receive; the less we give, the less we receive; if we give nothing, we receive nothing and vice-versa. When Bodhisattva closes one door, rest assured that she will open another window. When we lose something in life, we will certainly gain other things elsewhere. What is most important is to have an optimistic mentality – believe that even when all seems lost, there will surely be something that we gain. Hence, we must be willing to relinquish. We have to face our losses with the right attitude as our loss today may become the one experience we gain in life, foretelling our impending success and what we are about to receive.

*THE IMPORTANCE OF SINCERITY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: The key to differentiating whether you are a good or evil person lies in the sincerity of mind in your dealings with others. If you treat others with sincerity, you are likely a kind person. On the other hand, if you treat others with a callously, you may be an evil person. Since the most important principle when interacting with others is sincerity, Buddhist practitioners should all be sincere towards others. If you are sincere towards others, you will soon gain their sincerity in return. This is why we must learn Buddhism, to be a genuine and magnanimous person as that is an extremely important character trait.

*BECOMING A DISCIPLE IS EQUIVALENT TO MAKING THE VOWS OF HONOURING THE MASTER AND REVERING HIS TEACHINGS, AND TO ADVANCE CULTIVATION SINGLE-MINDEDLY AND DILIGENTLY*

Caller: It is stated in the first rule of the Disciple's Code of Conduct that, 'Disciples of Master Jun Hong Lu are expected to be loyal to the Master, and to be solely dedicated to following the Master’s Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door.'

During the discipleship initiation ceremony, we have promised to abide by the Disciple's Code of Conduct. Does it mean that we have already made the vows of honouring the Master and revering his teachings, and to advance cultivation single-mindedly and diligently?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is already considered a pledge.

Caller: That means becoming a disciple is considered to have made the vows?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. You have already declared it during the discipleship initiation ceremony. Otherwise, how would you call it a vow? This is your resolution.

Caller: As long as we are able to fulfil the vows, as Guan Di Bodhisattva said, "Those who respect the Master and revere his teachings shall be protected by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas". Is that the case?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, that's for sure. Many people who honour the Master and revere his teachings are living a safe and peaceful life. They are able to resolve any serious matters that arise.
Inspirational Short Stories: A Loving Heart is What Matters

There was a lonely old man in the United Kingdom whose wife and children were all gone. He lived alone in a large house with a garden. He was ill and frail. He decided to move to a nursing home and announced the sale of his beautiful house. The asking price was 80,000 pounds and the market value soon rose to 100,000 pounds. If it were not for health problems, he would not have sold the house that accompanied him for most of his life. He felt depressed.

A plain-dressed young man came to see the old man and bent down sincerely saying, “Dear Sir, I really want to buy this house, but I only have 10,000 pounds. If you sell it to me, I will let you live here with me, having tea, reading newspapers, taking a walk every day. I will keep you happy. Please believe me, I will take care of you with my whole heart.” After some thought, the old man sold the house to the young man with a smile for 10,000 pounds.

This story tells us that if we want to fulfill our dreams in the world, we don’t have to compete with each other, nor do we need to cheat others. As long as we have a loving heart, we will make our dreams come true.

*A GRATEFUL HEART REKINDLES A COMPASSIONATE HEART*

Master Jun Hong Lu:
One must understand that an unsurpassed mind of gratitude rekindles the compassion in us. Being grateful to others will allow you to have a good future. If you do not know the meaning of gratitude, you may develop hatred in your heart. Many people, despite that they have erred, failed to do self-reflection, do not have a sense of gratitude nor accept the punishment served.

For example, if you do something wrong at home and receive criticism from your spouse, you must be content and change gradually instead of developing hatred towards your spouse simply because they criticised you for making a mistake. As the saying goes, "Take care of your health before it's too late". We must learn to identify our shortcomings.
