*PERFORMING VIRTUOUS DEEDS ON BEHALF OF THE DECEASED AND THE RELATED PRAYER REQUEST FOR THE TRANSFER OF MERITS*

Caller: Is it alright to perform virtuous deeds such as releasing captive lives and donating for the purpose of printing the sutra booklets on behalf of the deceased?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Definitely!

Caller: How should we put forth our prayer request to Bodhisattva?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s simple. You may say, “May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva help transfer the merits and virtues that I have accrued today to <full name of the deceased>. May the Bodhisattva bless and protect the deceased so that he can ascend to a higher spiritual realm”.

Everything is a result of karma.
In this world, love and hate do not arise without reason.
Having learnt Buddhism, we learn to give and to be compassionate to all.

Words of Wisdom Vol. 5

一切都是因果,
这个世界没有无缘无故的爱,
也没有无缘无故的恨。
学佛之后才会付出,
学佛之后才会无缘大慈。

Universal love can sometimes appear selfish because those who pursue it leave their families. But this love is, in fact, truly universal because it achieves a greater good.

有时大爱看似比较“自私”,放下了小家,
实际上才是真正的大爱,成全了大家。

*DESIRE WILL ONLY LEAD US TO SUFFERING*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We must understand that our desires should never be taken for our hopes in life. There are many who have yearnings all their lives: “I want a television, I want a car, I want a house, I want….”. These are all desires which should never be taken as goals in life, because unfulfilled desires will lead us to sufferings. When a person has incessant desires in life and fails to attain what he has been longing for, he will experience extreme sufferings. That is when all hopes are lost in life.

*THE MOUSE IN A RICE JAR*

A mouse was over the moon when it accidentally fell into a jar half-filled with rice. It seemed to feel safe in the rice jar, so the mouse spent days just eating and sleeping away. Life had never been so lucky. Very quickly, the jar was emptied, and the mouse realised that it was too late to escape. The mouse felt helpless.

Our lives seem to be peaceful, but in fact, there are dangers everywhere. People hardly think of misfortunes when they enjoy their lives. Many people feel that they have always been in good health, but when they realise one day that they have cancer, it is too late.

Turning to the Buddha only when disaster strikes is like making a last-ditch effort.

*RESENTMENT COMES FROM MAKING COMPARISONS*

The human heart is full of hatred. But, do you know where does hatred come from? Let me tell you this: Hatred arises when you make comparisons. The moment you start comparing yourself with others, you will bring forth the resentment in your heart. This explains why it is not advisable to compare yourself with others.

When you stop making comparisons, there is no discrimination, which means your heart will not arise the notion of non-equanimity.

Make prayers for an equanimous mind every day and stopped comparing yourself with others then there wouldn’t be any more unhappiness, would there?

*THE HEART OF REPENTANCE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Whatever causes that put you off from spiritual cultivation are your own karmic obstacles.

When you think, “Oh, I‘m too lazy to wake up in the morning” - this is the effect of your karmic obstacle!

When your family members obstruct your practice - this is another effect of your karmic obstacle!

When you say, “I have children; my hands are full; I am simply too busy to even pray, let alone go out to help others, etc” - once again, the effect of your karmic obstacle!

All these hindrances are due to your karmic obstacles. One fine day, when your karmic obstacles erupt and you get into a car accident, you cry, _“Oh Master, please help me!”_ And, there you are wondering, _“Where did this karmic obstacle come from?”_

This is where it came from: Every day you are accumulating a little karmic obstacle, and before you know it, a major karmic obstacle is formed.

*OVERCOMING THE NOTION OF RIGHT AND WRONG WITH OUR INNATE NATURE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: When you suspect another person, you will develop a sense of right and wrong in your mind. If you trust a person, such a notion will not arise, am I right? Speaking from the perspective of your innate nature, when a person does something which arouses your suspicion, how do you overcome such a feeling?

It is simple. Just regard it as a natural phenomenon regardless of whether a person has any shortcoming; it is natural for him to have shortcomings, it is also natural for him not to have any shortcoming simply because he is just a human being.

When he is in the wrong, I will forgive him; when he is doing it right, I should not doubt him too. In other words, I do not judge the person – and that is precisely how it is like to be natural.

If you do not suspect others, you will not easily arouse others’ suspicion towards you. Conversely, if you often harbour suspicious thoughts about others, you will invite a corresponding response from others as well.

*A SCENE FROM THE GUAN YIN CITTA PURE LAND: THE BUDDHA WAS ROTATING THE MANI PEARL OF A LOTUS FLOWER*

Question: The following are the scenes of Guan Yin Citta Pure Land that I, the disciple of Master Lu, witnessed today.

In the Guan Yin Citta Pure Land: The Buddha is gazing at a lotus flower in the lotus pond. In the centre of the lotus flower, lies a glittering mani pearl that radiates brilliant golden light. Steadily extending His hand, and with much gentleness, the Buddha rotates the mani pearl.

Curious, the Heavenly Child asks, _“Why does the Buddha rotate the mani pearl of this lotus flower?”_

The Buddha explains, _“This is because she is currently reciting the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance (LIFO).”_

The Victorious-Strife Buddha then chips in, _“As a matter of fact, the Buddha is showering her with blessings and setting in motion her bright inherent nature.”_

The Heavenly Child probes further, _“Is this the reason she is sobbing while performing repentance?”_

The Buddha replies, _“I’m applying the refreshing heavenly dew to purify her heart that has been contaminated by the five desires and the corresponding six sense objects.”_

Guan Yin Bodhisattva then asks, _“Is the Buddha giving a reminder to my disciples that their cultivated state-of-mind has yet to reach the Buddha’s expectation?”_

The Buddha responds, _“Indeed! They are still unable to see through the worldly desires.”_

Master Jun Hong Lu: I would like to reiterate that it is critical to study _Buddhism in Plain Terms._ You need to listen and read more. Besides, you must aim to do all that is wholesome and free your mind from all things unwholesome.

Excessive unwholesome and selfish thoughts will pose an obstacle for you to ascend to heaven. After all, the lotus pond in heaven is simply immaculate.

If you tear up while reciting _LIFO_ or for unbeknown reasons, it means that the Bodhisattva is showering you with blessings. Please work hard to eliminate your karmic obstacles soonest.

*IT IS BEST TO REFRAIN FROM ANY EVIL THOUGHTS OR DEEDS ON THE 15TH DAY OF THE 8TH LUNAR MONTH*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Why do the Chinese attach such great importance to the 15th day of the 8th lunar month? Do not hold ill-will or commit any evil deeds on that day. If you do, your deeds will be thoroughly reprehensible.

On the 15th of the 8th lunar month, it is not about the reunion among humans but the reunion of humans and heaven. This is because many Bodhisattvas will descend to this world, hence, it makes sense to confide in Bodhisattvas on this day.
