*PUT YOURSELF IN OTHERS’ SHOES AND CULTIVATE A SENSE OF EMPATHY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Buddhism often says that understanding others leads to compassion, human beings are born with innate good nature and karma will take its course. In this human realm, everyone is fighting a battle under various circumstances. When we understand others, we will let things go. In the Dharma it was stated, “if you know your past self, you will definitely forgive who you are now”. Consequently, we have to understand the shifts and charges of human life and that all worldly phenomena are impermanent. The more understanding we are, the more compassion there is within us; the more empathetic we are, the more smooth-sailing our journey will be in this world.

*MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Money may buy you medicine but cannot buy you life;
money may buy you insurance but cannot buy you safety;
money may buy you temporary joy but cannot buy you happiness;
money may buy you material goods but cannot buy you satisfaction;
money may buy you a marriage but cannot buy you love;
money may buy you supplements but cannot buy you health.

*IN THE ABSENCE OF KARMIC CREDITORS, WHERE DO THE OFFERED _LITTLE HOUSE_ AND _SELF CULTIVATION RECORD FORM_ GO?*

Caller: When a person has neither karmic creditors nor foreign spirits on his body, where would his offered _Little House_ and _Self Cultivation Record Form_ go?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That will become the energy he stores up. Let me give you an example, if you don't owe any debts, where goes the money that you have earned? Don't you save them up?

Caller: Yes, as bank deposit.

Master Jun Hong Lu: The same goes here, the energy will be deposited for yourself.

*THE BUDDHA HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT ATTAINING BUDDHAHOOD*

Master Jun Hong Lu: In the past, there were many disciples who learned Buddhism from their masters. They were meditating, chanting and performing prostrations every single day.

They asked their masters, "Will I attain Buddhahood by doing all these?"

Most masters replied:
"You will not attain Buddhahood through meditation"
"Neither will you attain Buddhahood through chanting"

The disciples then asked, "Then what should I do to attain Buddhahood?"

The master answered, "The Buddha had never thought about attaining Buddhahood."

This philosophy tells us that, we should always turn our attention to our efforts, instead of focusing on the outcome.

*LEARN TO TAKE HARDSHIPS IN LIFE*

Hardships in life are nothing. I have always told you, we have to learn to endure two types of hardship. Number one, learn to take losses; number two, learn to take the shorter end of the stick. On our path of practising Buddhism, it is through experiencing hardships that we understand that nothing whatsoever should be grasped at or clung to.

When a person is in a state of exhilaration, he will not be able to find his way home. Just like a happy drunkard not making sense of who he is. As Buddhist practitioners, we have to learn to control our desires, only then are we able to elevate our state of mind to attain Bodhisattva’s “samyak-sambodhi” {Note: Supreme Enlightenment}.

*THE ESSENCE OF SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Is spiritual cultivation a working of miracles? No, there is nothing miraculous about it. Spiritual cultivation is the good deeds that we perform and our accumulation of merits little by little. It is when, in times of adversities, amidst our struggles with our many worries, we are able to save ourselves and become our own master in life; and when we successfully harness the power to overcome our tendencies to worry and our selfishness — this in itself is the essence of spiritual cultivation.
