Only through understanding that life is impermanent and perpetually changing will we cherish our limited lifetime.
Let go of meaningless attachments, and face life's afflictions and vexations with equanimity.

*THE RIGHT MENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE EIGHT SUFFERINGS OF LIFE*

Caller: At times, we may develop a sudden realisation that our parents or those who have been with us for many years will depart eventually. Perhaps, they would end up in a better place and this would be good for them. However, those they leave behind will still be very sad. In this regard, what sort of mental attitude should we adopt towards birth, ageing, sickness, death and the rest of the Eight Sufferings?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Everyone must go through the Eight Sufferings as long as they are in the human realm, isn‘t that right?

Caller: Yes.

Master Jun Hong Lu: We must be sincere and have a sense of guilt. This explains why, many religions such as Christianity and Catholicism say from the outset that “all men are sinners”.

Many cannot accept this and rebuke, “What am I guilty of? How am I supposed to know this?” The fact is, as long as we come to this world, we have basically sinned, guilty of committing something wrong in our previous lives. There is no perfection in the human world. Hence, it will not be possible for one to expect something flawless in a world of imperfections.

Caller: That’s true.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Now that you are here in this environment, you must accept it as a training ground. Once you are in this world, you can’t escape the pain of having to leave the ones you love, and the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness and death. Hence, you must accept these harsh realities of life. Even if you do not accept these realities and evade them, you would still need to bear your sins.

Caller: Well, perhaps we just have to endure these pains.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, but endurance is only one part of the practice. As Buddhist practitioners, we can resolve these sufferings by relying on Bodhisattva to help us see through them all.

Caller: In the beginning, we may still wallow in sorrow, but this will slowly fade away over time.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. We must understand that we are here to go through the suffering and there is no two-ways about it. However, we may pray to Bodhisattva to liberate us from these sufferings, so that we don’t feel so much agony in our hearts. Although we may not be ready to forget, we have to learn to let go. By learning to do so, there will come a day when you are capable of letting go. Failing which, you’ll never be able to let go.

*HOW TO CULTIVATE COMPASSION WHILE ELIMINATING EVIL THOUGHTS?*

Caller: Master Lu, how do we cultivate compassion while eliminating our evil thoughts?

Master Jun Hong Lu: If you can always be compassionate, the devil will stay away from you. You should always listen to positive words and practise Buddhism diligently. Do not take to heart the shortcomings of others.
*A TURTLE AND THE DRIFTING YOKE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: “To be born as a human is as rare as the chances of a blind turtle popping its head through the hole in the drifting yoke as it rises to the ocean surface for air once in a hundred years” (盲龟值木).

Therefore, we must cherish life; make use of this illusory world for true cultivation; devote ourselves, both body and mind and go beyond ordinary people and reach the realm of sages – only then we are able to witness our own Buddha-nature.

We must value time and cherish life.
Be passionate about life, live life to the fullest, cherish it and value it.
To survive is to succeed, to earn money is only a game, to be healthy is our aim, and to be liberated is the truth.

*SOW THE SEEDS OF COMPASSION AND LOVE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: When you sow the seed of compassion, you shall reap compassion; when you sow the seed of love, you shall find love perpetually revolving around you.

Trust that compassion prevails in this world. A compassionate heart is able to touch the hearts of others. Even for those whose hearts have been hurt before, or those whom we considered “evil”, they will retain a portion deep inside, where it is warm where compassion thrives - a portion merely obscured by the Five Desires and Six Dusts.

When you sow kindness, you gain compassion.
Only by helping others can you achieve your aims.

*THE STRENGTH OF ONE’S MINDSET*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Even cancer cells will be intimidated by someone who has a heart of joy. Do you think these bad cancer cells will be afraid when they see Bodhisattvas?

This is for sure. On one hand, the cancer cells will be frightened when one’s mind is as strong as that of Vajra Bodhisattva (金刚菩萨). On the other hand, they will also be terrified of Maitreya Bodhisattva (弥勒菩萨) and will run around everywhere when Maitreya Bodhisattva laughs.

Therefore, the dharma joy radiated by a person is also capable of saving lives. This is because a lot of people, once their spirits are lifted, their mindset will transform and they will no longer immerse in sadness or sorrow.

Have faith in Bodhisattvas that everything will be arranged for the best.
Bear in mind that this is not the final arrangement but the best arrangement.

*PERFORMING VIRTUOUS DEEDS ON BEHALF OF THE DECEASED AND THE RELATED PRAYER REQUEST FOR THE TRANSFER OF MERITS*

Caller: Is it alright to perform virtuous deeds such as releasing captive lives and donating for the purpose of printing the sutra booklets on behalf of the deceased?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Definitely!

Caller: How should we put forth our prayer request to Bodhisattva?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s simple. You may say, “May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva help transfer the merits and virtues that I have accrued today to <full name of the deceased>. May the Bodhisattva bless and protect the deceased so that he can ascend to a higher spiritual realm”.
