*GRATITUDE WILL INHIBIT THE CREATION OF KARMIC OBSTACLES*

Caller: Master Lu, you once said “To inhibit the creation of karmic obstacles, firstly, we should gain self-discipline. Secondly, we should always have gratitude.” May I ask, why having gratitude is so effective in inhibiting the creation of karmic obstacles?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is very simple. When you feel thankful towards a person, will you still get angry with him? If you are thankful for your husband, will you still quarrel with him or hold any grudges against him? If you are thankful to everyone, would you still perform any evil act? You wouldn’t, right? With such a remarkable amount of gratitude in you, it is impossible for you to do anything evil to them. This explains how the creation of karmic obstacle is inhibited.

*CUT DOWN ON OUR WORLDLY DESIRES*

In truth, all the happiness in this world stems from human beings’ desires. The pleasure of eating stems from our desire to consume food, the pleasure of wealth and fame stems from our greed; our quest for sexual intimacy stems from our sexual desire, the pleasure derived from sleeping and laziness also stems from a type of desire, that is the desire for enjoyment. As such, in this human realm, beware! The happiness you experience today could become the foundation for your slackness in your cultivation tomorrow!

Why the practice of extreme asceticism? It is to allow us to be enlightened, as all things in this world are impermanent. They are all worldly desires. It is through cutting down these worldly pleasures that we are able to experience the “real” happiness within. Happiness within is something you sense on a spiritual level.

*TO COMMENT ON OTHERS BEHIND THEIR BACK IS A SERIOUS KARMA OF SPEECH*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned that “One is half way to achieving Buddhahood when he is able to guard himself from creating karma of speech”. May I ask if karma of speech includes making comments about others behind their back?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure.

Caller: So, it means, regardless of whether the other party is in the right or wrong, we shouldn’t make judgements about them, is that right?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Unless your intention is to help him, only then you can make a comment about them. Otherwise, if you do so, you are generating negative energy. If your intention is to help him and you talk to him face-to-face, this is positive energy, and as such it is not considered as creating karma of speech. For example, I am ready to help a person today. How can I avoid commenting on him? Do you regard this as creating karma of speech, then? On the other hand, if I am not with the person concerned today but I made some sharp statements and talked behind his back, it is then considered to be creating karma of speech.

*SUCCESS COMES TO THOSE WHO CAN ENDURE HARDSHIP*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Up in a mountain, there were two identical looking stones with very different endings in life after a few years. The first one was carved into a Buddha statue and was regarded with veneration by the people; while the second one was made into a non-significant stone step.

With much grievance, the second stone said, “My friend, since we are stones of the same type, why there is such great disparity between our fate?” The first stone answered, “Do you still remember? A few years ago, when a sculptor came along, you were terrified by the pain inflicted on you from the sculptor’s knife. You couldn’t bear the suffering. Hence, with that few cuts from the chisel, you ended up as a stone step. As for me, I lived through the pain that turned me into a statue of a Buddha. Success comes to those who can endure hardship - which explains why today I am held in veneration by the people while you, unfortunately, are just their stone step."

*RECITING _EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE_ (LIFO) CAN ELIMINATE KARMIC OBSTACLES*

Question: Why _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_ (LIFO) is effective for eliminating karmic obstacles?

Answer: LIFO is an extremely important mantra. There are a great number of Bodhisattvas mentioned in this mantra. Hence, whenever you pray to each Bodhisattva to seek repentance, each of them will help you eliminate your karmic obstacles. Thus, do not be hasty in your recitation. There are some who fail to articulate the names of the Bodhisattvas in full during recitation - in such case, how will elimination of karmic obstacles be possible?

*SHOULD WE PRAY TO BODHISATTVA IN THE PRESENCE OF A RAINBOW*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned in your discourses that rainbows are the seven-coloured lights of Bodhisattva. You have also stated that if we gaze deeper into rainbows, we may be able to see Bodhisattvas. In that case, is it proper for us to gaze at rainbows in prayer to Bodhisattvas?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is alright. Where there are rainbows, Bodhisattvas will be present — only Bodhisattvas are able to emit seven-coloured lights of this kind. From a worldly point of view, rainbows are a natural phenomenon that serve no purpose but aesthetic appeal. However, a rainbow is actually the very awe-inspiring seven-coloured lights of Bodhisattva shining in the sky.

Caller: I understand. Thank you, Master Lu.

*THE PERFECTION OF HUMAN INTEGRITY LEADS TO THE ATTAINMENT OF BUDDHAHOOD*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As Buddhist practitioners, we should understand that 'the perfection of human integrity leads to the attainment of Buddhahood'. In the human world, there are two aspects of success: success in one's endeavours and success in leading a morally upright life.

Here’s a word of advice from me: Even if you achieve success in your career at the expense of your morality, it is but temporary. Similarly, if you do not have an illustrious career because of your strong moral compass, it will only be a temporary phenomenon.

REPAY ALL OUR KARMIC DEBTS IN ORDER TO BE TRULY CAREFREE

Master Jun Hong Lu: As humans, we must respect the law. As Buddhist practitioners, we must abide by the law of heaven. As people who wish to save sentient beings and help the deceased ascend to a higher spiritual realm, we must understand the rules of the underworld.

The impediments of life and the illnesses of the body can all be attributed to these two words, ‘karmic obstacles’. We humans have come to this world because of that so as to repay the karmic debts that we have incurred in our past lives. Hence, if a person wishes to change themselves, it is integral for them to understand everything about karmic obstacles.

As such, we must cherish the time we have in the human realm. Thoroughly change ourselves with diligence and cultivate our mind to become increasingly kind; repay all our karmic debts in order to be truly carefree.
