*VIRTUE IS GIVING OTHERS HOPE*

Someone once asked me, “What is Virtue?”  Let me tell you that virtue is giving others hope, in other words, imparting wisdom to others.  Virtue is not an external pursuit.  It originates intrinsically from our compassionate nature, which develops into selfless love for all sentient beings, with the aim of helping people in this world.

Buddhist practitioners shall sow seeds extensively in the field of merits and diligently cultivate wisdom to accomplish the true purpose of life.  The cultivation of both merits and wisdom is essential in practising Dharma.  This is because merits and wisdom are just like a pair of aircraft wings.  An aircraft could not take off when either of its wings is absent.  Therefore, a blessed man certainly possesses wisdom, while a wise man is certainly blessed.  So, let’s create a true life of Dharma through the cultivation of mind, merits and wisdom.

*WAYS TO REDUCE BLOATING; DRINKING TEA AFTER MEAL HELPS IN DIGESTION*

Caller: I often felt bloated around lower abdomen.  What should I….

Master Jun Hong Lu:  It has got to do with your digestive system.  Firstly, take smaller meals more frequently.  Secondly, avoid oily food and limit your consumption of eggs.

Caller:  That’s alright.

Master Jun Hong Lu:  In addition, you should drink a cup of tea after meal.  Why do some people like to drink tea after their meal?  Did you notice Westerners have the habit of drinking coffee?  It is because it helps to cleanse the grease from their digestive system.

Caller: I see.

Master Jun Hong Lu: And, drinking tea has the same benefit.  It helps in digestion, protects our colon and prevents accumulation of food in the stomach.

*THE REACTION TO RECITING THE EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE RECITATION DIFFERS WITH VARIANT DEGREE OF KARMIC OBSTACLES*

Caller: Why there are some who recite many times of the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance without the slightest reaction, while others who will start feeling uncomfortable and having dreams of many karmic creditors when they recite only a few times?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s because that person has a lot of karmic obstacles. For example, for a person who is free from any debts, when he says: “In future, should I owe others money, I will surely pay back”. In this case, as there is no one demanding any repayment from him, naturally he won’t feel any discomfort or guilt. On the contrary, when a person faces a group of creditors demanding repayments, even when he has just recited a few times saying: “I will be repaying my debts”. “Bang!” a group of creditors will dash forward. For sure he will feel uncomfortable immediately. It’s that simple.

Caller: For the second scenario, it is not advisable for them to recite too many? Should they slow down their pace in repenting of their mistakes?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right.

Caller: The moment they “over-recite”, they will not be able to manage.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure.

*Q&A SESSION WITH WORLD BUDDHIST FRIENDS, TAIWAN, OCTOBER 04, 2016*

Question:  Master Lu, if a person amassed lots of virtues but does not cultivate or perform recitations, what would be the ultimate culmination?

Answer:  You may have performed many virtuous deeds, but without cultivation or recitation, would you consider these as virtues? Without cultivation or recitations, all the acts can only be regarded as good deeds that will reap kind returns; but there are no merits to them. There is a difference between virtues and good deeds. When you perform good deeds, you will be rewarded with kind returns and that ends it all.  Should there be any karmic eruption; like car accident or chronic diseases, virtues will be able to neutralize their effect, whereas good deeds are incapable of resolving your negative karmic affinity.

*THINK TWICE BEFORE WE SPEAK*

As Dharma cultivators, every word we speak should be planned and considered. Speak only if your words are going to benefit sentient beings. This is of the utmost importance.

Once you start to sift through the things you say, you will come to realize that you have spoken so much more than you should have, and hurt so many whom we should not have hurt. Hence, as Dharma cultivators, we have to exercise even more caution when it comes to our speeches and conducts. Talk less and perform more recitations.

*THE IMPORTANCE OF A POSITIVE MINDSET*

Handling conflicts in life is like mastering the art of cooking. The heat at which you cook should not be extreme.

To have a positive mindset in life is like being able to control the heat while cooking. A raging temper will destroy your destiny, just like raging fire will burn the dishes.

*PORTRAIT OF BODHISATTVA TO BE ROLLED FROM ITS BOTTOM TO THE TOP WHEN NECESSARY*

Caller: When we obtain a portrait of Guan Yin Bodhisattva from Dharma Convention, should we roll it from bottom to the top or the other way round?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course roll it up from the bottom to the top. You are very smart, I think you are quite intelligent.

*LEARNING BUDDHISM WHOLEHEARTEDLY, DILIGENTLY AND GENUINELY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: A lot of people learn Buddhism throughout their lifetime. However, they do not know what actually are they practising in the end. They are just putting on an act as a Buddhist practitioner to gain the respect of others. They are simply trying to fish for compliments and this is sheer self-deception. I hope that all of you learn Buddhism wholeheartedly, diligently and genuinely. Very genuinely. One must be genuine when it comes to Buddhism learning so as to achieve the desired state.

*A HEART WITHOUT DESIRE WILL NATURALLY BE LIKE THE WATER*

A happy man is one without desire. One who is unable to satisfy his insatiable desire will always live in agony.

The path of practising Buddhism is not plain sailing either, as you are expected to put in tremendous effort to break away from undesirable habits and to resist temptation.

*LETTING GO OF NEGATIVE ENERGY*

It’s hard truth that this world is filled with sufferings. When you are in agony, tell yourself that the pain will not last forever, as it will diminish as time goes by. Therefore, do not anchor agony and vexation in your heart. If you keep storing all your hatred, jealousy, vexations and other negative energy in your heart for an extended period of time, it will inflict upon your mind and soul; just like how a computer will crash.
