*HOW TO PASS THE ASSESSMENTS IN OUR DREAMS? - IT IS THROUGH DEEP DOWN CULTIVATION AND FULL OBSERVATION OF PRECEPTS*

Caller: In the process of learning Dharma and spiritual cultivation, how do we deal with the setbacks that we encounter? At times, though we do our utmost to observe the precepts, however, we are often defeated by some tests that we underwent in our dreams. Under such circumstances, how do we pick ourselves up and continue striving again?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is very simple. Should you be defeated by a particular test in your dream, it is apparent that you have yet to achieve a deep down level of cultivation. With deep down cultivation and with complete adherence to the precepts, you will no longer be committing anymore wrongdoings in this world. If you feel you should not commit certain act in your dreams, you will definitely tell yourself that this is something you cannot do in the world of the living. Do you understand?

Caller: Ok.

*WHAT IS THE MEANING OF “BACKSLIDE FROM CULTIVATION?”*

Q: A Buddhist friend asked me what is the meaning of “backsliding from cultivation”? Am I right to say that: the determining factor is your heart. If you have unwavering Faith and Vow towards Bodhisattvas, it is not considered as backslide even if you choose to pursue your cultivation with other Dharma Door. Conversely, if you appear to be practising with our Dharma Door, but your Faith and Vow towards Bodhisattvas have declined or when you stop practising Dharma, you are considered to have backslid from cultivation. Am I right to explain in this way?

A: The way you explained is very wise. Regardless of which Dharma Door it is, as long as you practise diligently, it is considered as great devotion. Selection of Dharma Door is like choosing a doctor for treatment. All doctors are good, do not defame the previous doctor just because you have chosen another one, as that is unethical.

*IMPORTANT DISCOURSE FROM MASTER LU: DO NOT TRANSFER ALL YOUR MERITS TO FAMILY MEMBERS WHEN THEY FALL ILL*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Lately, there are many cases where people, who are seemingly cultivating very well, passed away after making vows to transfer all their merits to family members who fell ill. This is not the thing to do! As many people now gave away all their merits to others, their parents suddenly recovered. Even in cases of advanced cancer, all of a sudden, the illness took a turn for the better. The benefactor, on the other hand, develops cancer. Do not mess around with things like this. You do not have the ability to save others. Your merits are so limited and you owe it to your reluctance in performing meritorious deeds on usual days and your selfishness. When your family meets with a mishap, you act like someone who has a lot of savings, when the fact is, you can’t even afford it!

*CEASELESSLY AUGMENT OUR GOOD FORTUNE; MUST NOT ALLOW ANY “LEAKAGE” TO TAKE PLACE*

Master Jun Hong Lu’s speech: We talked about preventing any leakage of our good fortune as it is a very dreadful thing to happen. It is as though, you are working very hard to earn money but you are also spending money at the same time. At times, when the leakage gets out of hand, it is equivalent to overspending; no matter how much you may earn, you remain a pauper. We must learn to preserve our good fortune; do not allow any leakage to take place. We must not only guard our good fortune but also to ensure its unceasing augmentation. Do not allow it to leak. Once there is leakage, you will be in trouble as your karmic rewards will all be emptied.

*WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INCENSE BURNING ESPECIALLY FAST OR SLOW?*

Caller: When we offer incenses to Bodhisattvas, and if one of it offered to a particular Bodhisattva burnt especially fast or slow, what does it signify?

Master Jun Hong Lu: There are two explanations to it. Firstly, the quality of the incense may cause it to burn faster or slower. Different types of materials like sandalwood, are mixed together to produce the incenses. There is a type of incense made from scented powder and some sticky substance, which will cause the incense to burn faster if more of it is added and vice versa. Secondly, under normal circumstances, the incense will burn faster if Bodhisattva visited and slower if Bodhisattva do not come by.

Caller: I understand now. There is another situation whereby the incense stopped burning midway. Is there any explanation to this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is the same as the earlier scenario. There are two explanations to it. It could be attributed to the quality of the incense, whereby a lump of sticky powder stop the burning midway; or that Bodhisattva or Dharma Protectors are expressing their displeasure towards you.

Caller: Oh. Master Lu, could such a situation also occur when things are not handled appropriately?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Generally, it should not happen. Should it occur, you must have done something inappropriate for sure, and the Dharma Protectors are unhappy about it.

Caller: I understand, thank you Master Lu for answering my questions.

*WHAT KIND OF ACTS ARE CONSIDERED AS FEARLESSNESS DANA (ABHAYA DANA)?*

Caller: Master Lu, there are different types of Dana, namely Wealth Dana (Amisa Dāna), Dharma Dāna and Fearlessness Dana (Abhaya Dāna). Most of our Buddhist friends are only familiar with Dharma Dāna and Wealth Dana; what kind of acts and tricks are considered as Fearlessness Dana?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Don’t you know about Fearlessness Dana? Go to the Buddhist Practice Centre and help to shift the wooden stools or mop the floor, drive others around, help in transporting books, move things, etc., all are considered as Fearlessness Dana. Also, help others in moving fish, perform heavy duties, as long as it is meant for helping sentient beings and it is virtuous deeds. Did you see how many people were arranging chairs in the Guan Yin Hall during the Dharma convention period? All these acts are considered as Fearlessness Dana.

*DILIGENTLY HELP PEOPLE AWAKEN SPIRITUALLY BY INTRODUCING BUDDHISM TO THEM OR HELPING SENTIENT BEINGS IS TANTAMOUNT TO PERFORMING RECITATION IN PRACTISING DHARMA*

Caller: If the leaders of regional Dharma practice groups spend less time on daily recitation of Buddhist sutras and Little Houses because they dedicate more time to helping other people to attend Master Lu’s public talks on Buddhism, will it affect the quality of their practice and their ‘lotus’ in Heaven? Is it necessarily for them to recite at least 2 to 3 pieces of Little Houses every day while helping others? Master Lu, please enlighten us as I have noticed that they have been too occupied, leaving them with little time for performing recitation.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s the same. A person who is able to help sentient beings, is in fact putting recitation into practice. He is helping sentient beings, and that is tantamount to performing recitation, isn’t it?
