Master Jun Hong Lu's Discourse (Question 253)
6 September 2018

*HOW TO ATTAIN A STATE OF ABSOLUTE DISCIPLINE?*

Question: What should we do to achieve a more profound, higher and stricter level of discipline; how can a state of absolute discipline be attained?

Answer: In order to gain wisdom and the power of concentration, one must observe the precepts; and the level of wisdom that one gains is in proportion to their strictness on discipline. Lacking in discipline makes the attainment of wisdom and concentration impossible. On the same note, only through observing the discipline of Bodhisattva can one gain the wisdom of a Bodhisattva. To reiterate, the level of wisdom and concentration one gains is directly proportional to the amount of effort one puts into disciplining oneself. Hence, in the three studies of Buddhism: Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom; all three studies are mutually necessary.

*REASON WHY WE FAIL TO STAND UP TO THE TEST DESPITE KNOWING THE LOGICS*

Caller: At times, we can be very eloquent in explaining logics. However, when we are faced with a situation, we will find ourselves having difficulty standing up to the test. Why is this so?

Master Jun Hong Lu: As human being, we are prone to see others but fail to see ourselves. It is only when we are experiencing hardship that we realise the importance of others. But, in time of comfort, we often fail to contemplate how, the help from others have helped us to attain such great blessings. Therefore, we have to constantly remind ourselves of the sufferings we had put through; reminisce about our past, so as to rid ourselves of greed, animosity and ignorance.

*DO NOT THINK LIGHTLY OF THE LITTLE GOOD DEEDS*

Master Jun Hong Lu, “Do not think lightly of the little good deeds that seem insignificant because even by the falling of water drops, a water pot is filled; a man becomes full of good, even if he gathers it little by little.”

*IGNORANCE WILL FLAW OUR UNDERTAKINGS AND BRING ABOUT MISFORTUNES*

Master Jun Hong Lu: As humans, we are very foolish and frequently bring about many misfortunes to ourselves. Due to ignorance and a lack of understanding of many situations, our undertakings are flawed. For instance, we are unable to identify and differentiate between good and bad people, we are worried and unhappy, all of which hinder the perfection of our mind. Today, if you are in the practice centre, but still remain unhappy and entangled in idle gossip regarding yourself and others, don’t you think that you lack wisdom?

*A FALSE SENSE OF SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS*

Master Lu hopes that we will not have a false sense of self-consciousness as this will be deceiving ourselves. Many people deceive themselves by looking for justification when they know that they have committed wrongs, “everyone is doing it, I should not be considered to be going overboard.” Many people live their lives thinking that they are always right. Why? They refused to admit that they had committed a wrong and felt that other people are doing worse than them. In this way, they will never improve themselves.

As Buddhist practitioners, we must be able to see our own faults and be brave enough to forget our own shortcomings. Because, when we are able to forget our own shortfalls, we are able to embrace our good traits. Our good traits will not accumulate if our souls are dwelling on sorrows and shortcomings every day. Therefore, we must be clean. When the heart is clean, we will be able to attain calmness. Purity of the heart will enable us to have a calm heart. When there is “calmness” we will be able to achieve “precepts”. Hence, a person who abides by the precepts will be able to calm down easily and attain wisdom in the process.

*EVERYTHING IS THE BEST ARRANGEMENT*

There comes a time in our life, when we find the cold freezing rain of life is beyond endurance, we should learn Buddhism, practise patience under humiliation, dedicate ourselves to progress, and last but not least, wait on.  Life is like a giant tree sheltering us from the storm.  As long as we put in our best effort, success will come to us slowly but surely.  We may not see immediate return; however, with a little patience, oftentimes it will come to us when we least expect it.

When we are faced with adversities, when everything seems to go against us - our relationship, job, career, and our shattered dreams; when we are in total desperation, try seeing things from another perspective.  Everything is the best arrangement.  Disaster and happiness are twins.  Behind every disaster, there is a drop of happiness, and there is always a hidden side of happiness where disaster may just be on the horizon.

*HOW TO HANDLE OTHERS’ SHORTCOMINGS*

Question: As our Buddhist learning and practice deepen, we will tend to discover more and more shortcomings on ourselves and on others. While we work hard to overcome our own shortcomings, however, noticing the shortcomings of others would only make us feel that they are not as kind as we thought they were. Unconsciously, we will start to perceive them pessimistically and may even result in the development of contentious relationships. Master, may I ask if this shows that our cultivation has strayed? How can we restrain and overcome such a critical mentality of ours towards others?

Answer: When you perform recitation of scriptures diligently, at a certain point of time, your state of mind will be elevated and you will, indeed start to notice many shortcomings of others. Just like me, the minute I meet someone, I can see through all their shortcomings. However, you are a Bodhisattva, a Buddhist cultivator. You have to love the person despite their faults. Just like a father or a mother who sees the faults of his child, you will have to continue to help the child to allow him to progress and not to despise him. This should be the mentality. Only through this, your sense of equanimity will arise. They are like your brothers and sisters. “It is alright that they have some faults. I have my own sets of faults too in the past. Now that I have made some improvement, all the more I should help him overcome his faults too. Only then will all of us be free of faults.”

*ONE WHO READILY APOLOGISES WILL FIND IT EASIER TO GAIN THE FORGIVENESS OF OTHERS*

Caller: Master Lu, is it true that when one apologises, it will allow compassion to arise in the minds of the opposite party?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Indeed, as soon as we apologise, we will gain the forgiveness of others.

Caller: I understand now. Take for example, if we make a mistake and receive your guidance. When we say “Master, I know my mistake now, I’m sorry,” you will immediately show leniency towards us.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Although this is true to a certain extent, it still depends on the severity of one’s karmic obstacles. In general, one who has relatively less severe karmic obstacles will be more readily pardoned compared to another whose karmic obstacles are weightier.

Caller: I understand now.

*IS USING VIRTUES ACCRUED FROM HELPING SENTIENT BEINGS, RECITATIONS AND LIFE LIBERATIONS TO PAY BACK IS THE FASTEST WAY TO ELIMINATE KARMIC DEBTS?*

Caller: During one of the Q&A sessions, one of the Buddhist friends shared that eliminating karmic debts is of utmost importance. He used all the merits accumulated through introducing Buddhism to people, recitation and life liberations to eliminate his karmic debts. May I ask is this the fastest way to eliminate karmic debts? Are our daily recitations inclusive? And how do we say our prayers?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Indeed, he is very wise. A person should use money earned to pay off debts first. Once the debts are cleared, whatever revenue made subsequently will be profit. A company should operate in the same manner. You cannot claim to be high in debt on one hand, and on the other, claim to be high in profit. Understand? That is why he is very intelligent. Thus, everyone should perform more good deeds to eliminate their karmic debts. This will in turn help to ward off troubles, worries and calamities for you. Isn’t that wonderful?

*THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LACKING PREDESTINED AFFINITY AND HAVING AFFINITY THAT HAS YET TO COME*

Caller: Is there a difference where one is said to have no predestined affinity as compared to one’s affinity has yet to come?

Master Jun Hong Lu: They are different for sure! Though it is said, ‘Guan Yin Bodhisattva is not able to help sentient beings who have no predestined affinity’, this is neither an absolute term in logic nor a circumstance that lasts the duration of one’s lifetime. Essentially, it means the person may not have the affinity at this moment in time. Though so, that does not necessarily mean that they will never have the affinity in their lifetime.
