*HOW TO MAINTAIN A BALANCE BETWEEN TIME SPENT ON WORK AND RECITATION*

Caller: Greetings to you Master Lu! I am new to the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door and I would like to seek your advice on how to achieve and maintain a balance between time spent between working and recitation?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Maintaining a balance between work and recitation is similar to maintaining your daily work-life balance. You have to first maintain the equilibrium in your heart. As long as you want to do your recitation, you should seize whatever time you have to do it. You don’t necessarily have to recite at a fixed time. Whenever you have spare time on hand, instead of wasting it on unwholesome thoughts, you should just stay focused on performing your recitation.

Caller: Noted. Thank you.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Bear in mind, performing recitation has the benefit of eliminating disasters and resolving your troubles. So, you should try to do your recitation as and when you are able to.

Caller: Yes. I was on vacation recently and I have been performing my recitation diligently. During this period of time, I felt a sense of serenity. However, as I will be resuming work in February, I am feeling scared and at a loss as I do not know how to maintain the balance.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Fear not. Insist on performing your recitation regardless of whatever hardship and fatigue you have to endure. Embrace Bodhisattva in your heart and you can be assured that you will never lose Dharma.

*SHOULD DHARMA PRACTITIONERS PRAY FOR WORLDLY AND HEAVENLY BLESSINGS?*

Caller: Is there a co-relation between a person’s foundation in Dharma practice and the worldly blessings that he receives? How do we achieve equilibrium between praying for worldly and heavenly blessings and accumulation of virtues? As Dharma practitioners, should we ask for worldly and heavenly blessings?

Master Jun Hong Lu: In the process of cultivation, it is a natural phenomenon for a Dharma practitioner to receive increasing worldly and heavenly blessings. Hence, it has nothing to do with whether a person asked for it or not. In the absence of worldly and heavenly blessings, the foundation that determines the eventual success in cultivation will not prevail. In fact, even to make it to Western Paradise, worldly and heavenly blessings is a prerequisite.

Caller: There are many Dharma practitioners in our group are of the opinion that we should not pray for worldly and heavenly blessings, but to focus purely on cultivation instead.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s very simple. During your years in primary school or university, you are advised not to give too much thoughts to what you wish to achieve and to just focus on your studies. In this case, tell me, will your effort in studies still bear fruits?

Caller: I understand now.

*MASTER JUN HONG LU’S DISCOURSE ON BUDDHIST PRACTICE AND SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION*

Caller: Master Lu, I am very touched by one of your teachings. Let me read it out for all. “In every age, there will be a large number of Bodhisattvas who have attained enlightenment. They attained enlightenment because they are quietly cultivating their mind, introducing Buddhism to other people and helping all sentient beings when other people are indulged in worldly enjoyments. When others have not been able to fathom the true essence of this world, they have already realised the true essence of life. Therefore, when others start seeking the true essence of life after experiencing pains, they would have become Bodhisattvas.”

Master Jun Hong Lu: Let’s take Lu Xun (鲁迅, China’s greatest modern writer for most of the 20th century) as an example. When asked what made him a great writer, he replied: “I spent all my time at work while others used theirs for drinking coffee.” It’s as simple as that. When others are indulged in the pleasures of life, we are diligently practising Buddhism and performing recitation; it will then be our turn to enjoy when others are suffering. That’s the logic behind it.

Caller: I understand now, thank you Master Lu.

*A PERSON WHO GETS ANGRY OFTEN WILL HAVE A BAD AURA; CALMNESS AND COLLECTEDNESS DO WONDERS TO ONE’S HEALTH*

Caller: How substantial is my karmic obstacles now? Do I have poor aura?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You are doing very well now. Let me tell you specifically that you have improved and you are very different from the last time. In the past, you….getting angry often will have an adverse effect on one’s aura. When a person is calm and collected, it goes to show that he is very much even-tempered and his blood circulation and pressure are normal.

On the contrary, those with high blood sugar, high blood lipids and high blood pressure (The Three Highs) are those who are unable to calm themselves. Without inner tranquility, their temper will form a vicious cycle. The more frequent they lose their temper, the higher their blood pressure and blood sugar level will become. The higher their blood sugar level, the more hot-headed they will become. This is how the vicious cycle goes. Hence, if you feel that you are getting angry less often now, and you are more calm and collected, that is a sign of good health.

Caller: Thank you Master. I will take the teachings of Bodhisattva and Master seriously and be a better person.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Do work hard at it and be rest assured, I shall give you my blessings.

*HOW TO DEAL WITH VEXATIONS BROUGHT ABOUT IN THE COURSE OF PURSUING COMFORT IN LIFE*

Caller: In our pursuance of comfort in life, we frequently have to work hard and deliberate on many issues, resulting in increasing vexations. How do we maintain the equilibrium between our life and troubles caused by external factors? Hope Master Lu could enlighten us.

Master Jun Hong Lu:
Do not succumb to greed. Always tell yourself, “I am contented with what I have. I do not need more, thank you.” By doing so, you will not covet for more. It is due to greed that intensifies your acquisitive drive and leads you to pursue endless desire for more. Eventually, you will find yourself landing in more troubles.

The best solution to avoid such vexations is to be contented and let go of what you have been clinging on. A person who is pre-occupied with discontentment and unhappiness is in a way mentally unsound. Do you understand?

Caller: Yes, I do. Thank you for sharing, Master Lu.

*GOSSIPING BEHIND OTHERS’ BACK IS AN ACT OF COMMITTING KARMA OF SPEECH*

Caller: Let’s say if I analyse and discuss about someone’s shortcomings with other Buddhist friends with the intention of learning from and using it to serve as a warning to avoid making the same mistake, is it considered as an act of committing karma of speech, or gossiping behind others’ back?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Do not talk about it! It is indeed committing karma of speech. Do not try to find excuses! Talking or gossiping behind others’ back are acts of gossipers. Do not find yourself excuses, such as, “Oh, I just wanted to avoid making the same mistake.” Can’t you just think over it by yourself at home? Why do you have to tell others?

Caller: Now I understand, Master.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Such a behaviour is very undignified and should never be done.

Caller: I am truly sorry, Master.

*DEDICATE OURSELVES TO SPIRITUAL PROGRESSION DAILY AND GUARD OUR WISDOM-LIFE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to dedicate ourselves to progress every single day; failing to do so would mean we are retrogressing with each passing day. It is essential for us to forge ahead vigorously in our Buddhism practice so as not to fail our “wisdom-life”. For many, life ceases as they fail to grasp the wisdom throughout their life. With wisdom, our wisdom-life is well-guarded and we will have a positive outlook on life. On the contrary, without wisdom, we are bound to hit a snag that may cause us to lose our life. That said, “life” is but a manifestation; what truly controls it, is a life led with wisdom.

*WITHIN 49 DAYS AFTER DEATH, WILL THE DECEASED BENEFIT FROM THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS PARTICIPATIING IN DHARMA CONVENTIONS?*

Caller: Master Lu, will our participation in Dharma Conventions help the deceased (within 49 days after death) to ascend to a higher spiritual realm?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure.

Caller: I see.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is what it means by “to deliver all sentient beings from suffering” which encompass all whom we need to help from heaven and earth.

Caller: In that case, when the Little House we offer to the deceased are minimal, can we perform meritorious deeds for them instead?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You may absolutely do that.

Caller: Generally, how much should we offer?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Just do it according to your conditions.

Caller: Thank you Master Lu.

(Question 20)

*PRECEPTS AND BLESSINGS*

Q: Is there a correlation between a person’s blessings and how well he observes the precepts?

A: There is definitely a correlation between a person’s blessings and how well he observes the precepts. The better a person observes the precepts, the more blessings he will receive. Don’t you think a person will have blessings if he observes precepts such as refraining from gossiping, flattery, harming others, stealing, and drinking alcohol? Will he not be greatly blessed if he can refrain from being greedy, angry and ignorant? On the other hand, if a person is greedy and has endless desires, will he have blessings? Surely not. The sight of him simply annoys people.

*HOW TO INVOKE THE ASISSTANCE OF GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA*

Master Jun Hong Lu : Let me share with you, Guan Yin Bodhisattva will definitely make her presence at 8 o’clock in the morning. No matter what life issues you are facing, insist on offering incense at 8am and let Guan Yin Bodhisattva know your problem with utmost earnestness, “Guan Yin Bodhisattva, please save me! Guan Yin Bodhisattva, please save me!”. And, when Bodhisattva is moved to tears, that is when you will receive her blessings. Do you understand?
