Words of Wisdom | Control Our State of Mind

Karma is created the moment we comment on someone. We must understand the workings of karma and *be untiring in our efforts towards Buddhahood every day*. While practising Buddhism, one is likely to slacken when one is not alert.

It is important that we *have control over our state of mind in order to examine whether we behave like a Bodhisattva*, to see whether we have many worries, and whether we are diligent.

When we attain the fruition of a Bodhisattva, we can control ourselves and exist in such a way that all our behaviours possess noble qualities.

Regard other people’s problems as our own. Always have the interests of others at heart and refrain from harbouring selfish thoughts.

Selfishness leads to distracting thoughts, which, if left unchecked, will make us more disturbed and miserable.

*RECITING _MANTRA TO UNTIE KARMIC KNOTS_ CAN BOOST OUR BENEFACTOR LUCK*

Caller: It is understood that frequent recitation of the _Heart Sutra_ will help improve our luck in receiving help when in need.

Recently, there have been more discourses related to the _Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots_. The recitation of this mantra has also become increasingly important, as it helps resolve karmic conflicts, and turn foes into friends. In this regard, can the mantra also boost our benefactor luck, enabling us to receive a helping hand in times of need?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. When your karmic conflicts are resolved through the recitation of the _Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots_, don't you think you would have more positive affinities, making it easier for you to meet more benefactors? Think about this: How would an evildoer, who is constantly at odds with people, be able to have positive affinities with others?

*SEE THROUGH THE EMPTINESS OF THE MATERIAL WORLD*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to see through the emptiness of the material world as it is transient. We have to realise that life is impermanent, as the most beautiful body is nothing but a mortal. *The most touching love story is nothing but a predestined affinity that meets and parts*. Hence, face life tribulations with a smile. We must understand that all things are in a state of constant change and our heart is immeasurable. Life’s trials and tribulations can only make us more mature. It takes strong faith to practice Buddhism to support the purity of the spiritual space in us.

*SUCCESS IN BUDDHIST CULTIVATION DEPENDS ON ONE’S DILIGENCE AND DETERMINATION, COUPLED WITH COMPASSION AND WISDOM*

Caller: There are two aspects to one’s success in Buddhist cultivation: diligence and determination coupled with compassion and wisdom. Is that correct, Master Lu?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes! It is important to be diligent as we have to embrace perseverance in cultivation. With regards to compassion and determination – when we are compassionate, we are able to overcome our hardships; and with determination, we become fearless. One who is keen on saving face will surely suffer. As a matter of fact, we should not be concerned about others losing respect for us if we are strong-minded. For example, when you think, “I have set my mind on cultivating to become a Buddha”, there is no need to be concerned about others losing respect for us. In fact, we should not allow such concerns to have a negative impact on us.

Caller: That’s right, Master Lu, success in Buddhist cultivation requires firstly, diligence and determination, and secondly compassion and wisdom.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s how it is. We need compassion and wisdom, without the latter, do you think you will be successful?

Caller: That’s not possible. We should cultivate the Prajna wisdom of Bodhisattva.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That is correct.

*LISTEN TO THE BUDDHA-DHARMA WITH YOUR HEART*

Question: In _Buddhism in Plain Terms_, it is mentioned that we must use our ears to listen to our own recitation of Buddhist scriptures to help us focus. Doing so will also generate huge meritorious blessings.

I would like to ask how does listening to our own chanting generate large blessings? Aren’t we all listening to our own chants, anyway?

Answer: Using our ears to listen to our chanting can be aptly defined by the Chinese word ‘Listen’ (闻 wén). This word consists of two Chinese characters with the word ‘ear’ (耳 ěr) inside the word ‘door’ (门 mén). This means, once you shut your door, you pay no attention to outside matters.

What does “Listen to the dharma” mean? There are some people who are capable of totally cutting out external noise because they are listening with their heart. This is how it should be when you listen to the Buddha-dharma. When your chanting is sincere you are able to truly feel your recitation. Otherwise, when you merely chant with your mouth but not your heart, you won’t be able to even hear your own voice.

*COMPASSION IS A VIRTUE THAT REQUIRES FORBEARANCE*

Question: In Words of Wisdom Volume 8, Master Lu mentioned, "There is a price to pay for being compassionate, and that is forbearance." Can Master enlighten us on this?

Answer: There is definitely a price to pay for being kind and compassionate to others. For example, you may end up being scolded by the one you help. In other cases, your effort in giving someone a piece of advice may not be appreciated at all. Under such circumstances, you have to practise forbearance.

Just like in my case. I am always trying to teach you, but amid your vexations, you would not realise that I was trying to help you with my compassion. Instead, you would complain when I did that. Hence, forbearance is precisely the price that I paid for having compassion for you.

*STUDYING BUDDHISM IN PLAIN TERMS – THE KEY TO ATTAINING ENLIGHTENMENT IN THE MORTAL WORLD*

Caller: I have encountered a problem. I have been busy reciting Little Houses everyday, but do not feel enlightened. How are other Buddhist practitioners progressing so well in their spiritual cultivation?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is simple, in order to be enlightened, we have to perform recitations and study Buddhism In Plain Terms at the same time. Isn’t Buddhism In Plain Terms, which I have given you, the key to attain enlightenment in this mortal world? Performing recitations will strengthen your spiritual cultivation. With a higher level of spiritual cultivation coupled with a key to realization, aren’t you able to unlock the door that leads to enlightenment?

Caller: I agree! The experience is extraordinary each time I read Buddhism In Plain Terms.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Absolutely.

*HOW DO WE NURTURE UNWAVERING FAITH?*

Caller: Master, it is mentioned in _Buddhism in Plain Terms_ that, “Unwearing faith can help eliminate all fears”, how do we inculcate this so that we do not regress in the face of adversity?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s very simple – keep close tabs on my teachings. How do you have confidence in someone? It is through regular contact with the person.

How do we achieve firm faith? Firm faith will help us resist the many distracting thoughts in us. Just like how we need to understand other people - Buddhist practitioners should learn to understand the Buddha, and be resolute in the practice.

This reinforces the importance of listening to my discourses on stories and teachings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. You will then become more steadfast in practising Buddhism. That is how unwavering faith comes about.

*LEARN TO CONTROL OUR EMOTIONS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Our emotions are just like temperature, constantly in flux. Hence, we must learn to control our emotions. Although how we feel does not equate to who we are, our emotions may sometimes dictate our lives. Should our negative emotions not receive proper and speedy remedy, we will only dwell increasingly deeper in depressive thoughts and gradually be unable to think things through. Eventually, this will result in us losing control over our emotions, doing things that may hurt ourselves and others, culminating in serious depression.

*A CLEAN AND TIDY ROOM GENERATES GOOD FENG SHUI*

If a room is arranged neatly and beautifully, it can put people to a good mood, the room has good feng shui. On the contrary, if a room is messed up, you will feel repressed and irritable, which is considered bad feng shui.

I hope each of you can tidy up your room a bit more, so that it is not full of clutter.
