*WE HAVE NEVER REALLY LIVED LIFE IN ITS TRUEST SENSE*

Master Jun Hong Lu: We were in so much hurry to grow up, yet we lament about lost youth; we spent a bulk of our youth to chase after money at the expense of our health, then we use all of that money to regain our health in our golden years; we always worry about our future, and yet we fail to cherish what we have in the present moment; we go through life with no clue about its purpose - we failed, both in living in the present and the future; we thought we are deathless but when death knocks on the door, we realised we had never actually lived life in its truest sense.

*HOW DO WE ELIMINATE MAJOR KARMIC OBSTACLES?*
*ELIMINATION WILL TAKE ON A SPEEDIER RATE WITH A HIGHER STATE OF MIND*

Caller: Master Lu, is it true that major karmic obstacles are in fact not easy to eliminate? Am I right to say that it takes a person’s sincere repentance, coupled with his persistent efforts in performing recitation of mantras, and not forgetting having to undergo a certain part of its retribution before it can be fully eliminated?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right.

Caller: It is crucial that one has to suffer its retribution?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. This is a very good question, young lady. You are very smart. When one has created some negative karmas in the past, of which the retribution has not taken place; if he continues to do more evil, it is equivalent to accruing more negative karmas. Let me give you an example. There is virus in your computer, if you do not get rid of the virus, and it has been further infested with new virus, it is when the amount of viruses goes out of control, that’s when your computer will crash.

Caller: I understand, Master Lu. It is important for us to elevate our state of mind, only then we are able to transform the power of karma, cause and effect at its core. Anything less, will be considered as superficial efforts, am I right?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. You are very smart, young lady.

Caller: Furthermore, if one’s state of mind is elevated quickly enough, his karmic obstacles will be eliminated at an even speedier rate. Is that the case?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure. Let me ask you. When an airplane first started to take-off, its speed is slow, right? The higher it flies, the faster it is, right? When your state of mind is high, don’t you think your progress will be faster?

Caller: That’s right.

*WE NEED TO HAVE A SENSE OF CRISIS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Once, there were two men who ran into a tiger in the forest. Immediately, the first man squatted down, took out a pair of sneakers from behind him and put them on. The second man saw what happened and scolded him, “What do you think you are doing? Even with your sneakers on, you can never outrun a tiger!” The first man replied, “Well, I just need to make sure that I outrun you!”

The lesson learnt from this story is that the greatest catastrophe of human in the 21st century is the lack of a sense of crisis. When we hear news such as plane crashes, people falling ill, family breaking up or children falling out with their parents, did it ever occur to us that there is a possibility that we may one day suffer the same fate? That brings us to the importance of Buddhist practice and spiritual cultivation, i.e. to protect ourselves from any possible harm and crisis. While non-Buddhist practitioners are susceptible to calamities and worries, we, on the other hand have geared ourselves up with our 'sneakers’ in dealing with life sufferings. To save ourselves is an essential prerequisite for saving sentient beings.

*DILIGENCE IS KEY TO ELIMINATING MANY KARMIC OBSTACLES; KARMIC PASS IS NOT EXCLUSIVE TO AGE ENDING WITH “3, 6, 9”*

Master Jun Hong Lu: You must remember, a person who is diligent in his practice is able to eliminate life’s many karmic passes, and transform his many karmic obstacles.

For example, there is a man whom everyone abhors as he is a thief. One day, a child fell into the water. When no one was brave enough to jump into the water, this man, undaunted by the danger, dashed on bravely and rescued the child. Tell me, would others still regard him as a thief? He will be regarded as a hero! “One act of kindness shall disperse a hundred calamities!” Consequently, if a person is diligent in his practice, he will be able to eliminate many karmic obstacles in his life. Do you understand?

Caller: Yes. Is it true that karmic passes may also happen outside the ages ending with “3, 6, 9”? For example, a karmic pass that is supposed to occur at the age of 29, may occur at the age of 30?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. It may come early, anytime at all. For example, there are many people who are supposed to pass away at their karmic pass of 69 years old. However, they passed away at the age of 68. It has been brought forward owing to the fact that they had exhausted the good fortune and longevity of their life.

*HOW TO BE FREE FROM OUR INNER SUFFERINGS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: If you have the desire to change others, why not start by changing yourself. After all, someone who cannot be tolerant towards sentient beings is someone who is unforgiving towards themselves -- a mentality that ultimately hurts no one but you.

The reason behind the sufferings of man lies in how we continually chase after the wrong goals. Hence, in order to break free from such sufferings, Buddhist practitioners should practise compassion and overcome the greed in us.

*A GOOD MENTAL ATTITUDE IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE AS IT WILL BRING ABOUT AN INCREASE IN ONE’S POSITIVE ENERGY*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Regardless of our endeavour, it is paramount that we should first regulate our mental attitude as it is just that important. A good attitude will render us success in resolving any issue, while a negative one may simply mess up the matter in hand. It is through a positive attitude that we are able to do more things that make us happy and derive a kind of positive energy from them. And, it doesn’t end here, because the more of such tasks we undertake, the happier we tend to be.

*BEING MINDFUL OF OUR SPEECH IS AS GOOD AS GUARDING OUR MINDS*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Most of our negative karmas are derived from our speech. There is a traditional Chinese saying, “misfortune finds its way out through the mouth; illness finds its way in through the mouth”. Hence, being mindful of our speech is as good as guarding our minds.

As Buddhist practitioners,

When we do not know, do not speak irresponsibly
When we do know, do not speak much
When we are troubled, do not speak fast
When we have nothing to say, say nothing

Guard our speech and be diligent in performing recitation - that is the way to achieve a healthy mind and body, to follow the spiritual path of Amitabha Buddha.

*A PERSON’S VOW OF BECOMING A FULL VEGETARIAN WILL BE AFFECTED BY UNINTENTIONAL CONSUMPTION OF NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD*

Caller: Master Lu, I heard in your previous programs that there were Buddhist practitioners who breached their vows of practising vegetarianism unknowingly till you performed Totem reading on them. At times, due to the circumstances we are in, or when we are unaware, we may, as full vegetarian, consume some non-vegetarian food. In cases where we are unable to get through to Master Lu’s hotline and we are also unsuspecting of such wrongdoings, is this considered as breaching of vows? Will it affect the vow we have made to become a full vegetarian?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course, it will affect the vow you have made. Regardless of whether you have done it intentionally or unintentionally, there will be resultant karma. To quote an example, if you accidentally kill someone in an automobile accident this year, will you still be sentenced by the law? That’s for sure, right?

Caller: Yes.

Master Jun Hong Lu: If you have done it intentionally, needless to say, the outcome will be even more serious .

Caller: I understand now. Thank you Master Lu for answering my question.

*HOW TO IMMERSE OUR HEARTS INTO THE SCRIPTURES DURING RECITATIONS*

Caller: Master Lu ever said that we have to immerse our hearts into the scriptures whenever we perform recitations. Please enlighten us on how do we achieve it, Master Lu.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Listen with your ears. For example, listen to your voice when you are reciting. However, many people will fall asleep quickly while listening to their own voice. It is alright to fall asleep, just continue to recite when you are awake. Listen to your voice as you recite.

Caller: Okay, thank you Master Lu for answering my question.
