*COOKING NON-VEGETARIAN MEAL FOR FAMILY MEMBERS WILL CAUSE LEAKAGE OF VIRTUES – BE DETERMINED ON NOT COOKING LIVE CREATURES*

Caller: I have some Buddhist friends around me who had vowed to become full vegetarians. However, among them there are some who are still in poor health. Does this have anything to do with the fact that they are still cooking non-vegetarian meals for their families?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure. For example, you are a good person now, but on the other hand you are still helping others to kill someone or perform bad deeds.

Caller: So, is there something that can be done to allow these Buddhist friends to be spared from preparing non-vegetarian meals, and at the same time steer away from any possible conflict in the family? By the way, they have made vows to be full vegetarians.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s very simple. It is a question of predestined affinity. If your family members’ predestined affinity is still premature and you have taken the lead to be a full vegetarian, conflicts will definitely arise as a result. You have no choice but to go with the flow of things first, that’s the only way. As for now, you can choose to be full vegetarian yourself while you continue to prepare non-vegetarian meals for your family members, there is no other way. However, you should stand your ground on not cooking any live creatures. Be firm on this issue, even if you are being held at gunpoint! Do you understand? Otherwise, it will be very bad for yourself as there will be leakage of virtues. It is like having a pocket that is consistently being filled with money, but at the same time the money keeps leaking out, would you still have money in the end?

Caller: No.

*COMPARING A PATIENT WITH ACUTE SICKNESS AND A HEALTHY BUDDHIST FRIEND WHO BOTH RECITE _EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE_ 5 TIMES DAILY, IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE IN TERMS OF SIGNIFICANCE?*

Caller: Master Lu, often through your radio program, you advised patients with acute medical condition to recite 5 times _*Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance*_ daily. What is the difference between this and those that are normally recited by us. Does it differ in terms of significance? Please enlighten us, Master.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is not the same. One is objective driven whereas the other is not. Should it be objective driven, it will help you solve the problem in hand. For example, you did something wrong and you said, “I will recite 5 times, Guan Yin Bodhisattva please bless and protect me and help me to resolve this particular wrongdoing”. As for the other, you recite the scripture even though you did not commit any wrong deed. The latter will have the effect of helping you resolve any grievances or some probable problem that may arise daily. The concepts of both are different. The latter may be conserved, whereas, the other is expended.

Caller: Master, how should a patient with acute medical condition state his prayer to Guan Yin Bodhisattva when he recites the _*Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance*_?

Master Jun Hong Lu: “Please help me eliminate my karmic knots and my karmic obstacles of this lifetime”.

*RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NEGATIVE KARMAS AND MERITS*

Caller: Is there or is there not a relationship between negative karmas and merits? Are they on a separate entity or when negative karmas are greater, then the merits are lesser?

Master Lu: Simply said, they are co-related. How can there be no connection between negative karmas and merits? People with heavy negative karmas will have lesser merits while people with great merits will possess less karmic debts. If this person possesses merits, he would not have committed many bad deeds as he is financially secured in every aspect. However, if this person has no merits and is deprived every day….he will start to do bad deeds such as robbing, stealing and cheating. Wouldn’t his negative karmas be heavy?

Caller: Master Lu, if in the past life there were a lot of good deeds as well as bad deeds being committed. Likewise, he has very heavy negative karmas and great merits, when the negative karmas become heavy then…

Master Jun Hong Lu: Merits will be depleted, thus, it is depleting merits and longevity; a person who does a lot of bad deeds will deplete his own merits. For example, a very good looking woman who was a very virtuous person originally, because of a small amount of money, she flirted with all kinds of men. Eventually, she looked like a fifty plus years old lady when actually she was only thirty plus in age. Is this not having her merits being depleted? She has emptied all her merits. Who else will want to love her?
