Caller: Master Lu, everyone aspires for happiness. Just how do we achieve it?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s very simple. As long as we feel happy in our heart, we have achieved happiness and vice-versa. What is happiness? It’s a kind of contentment, the feeling in us; something we achieve through our heart. When we feel the joy in doing something, that is happiness. Just like how we perceive a mother who gave birth to her child to be in pain, but the mother, on the other hand feels only happiness!

Caller: I understand. Is it true that we need to keep away from bad habits in order to achieve happiness?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. A happy person is one who keeps away from bad habits.

Caller: How are you Master? First of all, I would like to repent to Guan Yin Bodhisattva and Master Lu as I had committed many wrong deeds in the past, including sexual misconduct, etc. Please forgive me.

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is useless unless you are truly remorseful and will reform. You have to repent sincerely! Do you understand? Otherwise you will be trapped in the wheel of misfortune.

Caller: Yes. The amount of bad things I did in the past is just too much.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Good that you realise it now. Do repent sincerely as the energy from repentance is extremely good.

Excerpt of Public Talk by Master Jun Hong Lu

Everyone deals with different levels of stress. Sometimes we wonder how practising Buddhism can help us manage everyday problems. The solution is to gradually face our problems and accept them.

I always tell people that we must accept the problems and difficulties in life. Bearing the consequences of the karmic debts accumulated from past lives with positive attitude is actually a form of courage. The fact is, some people are able to accept while others will find life meaningless whenever they encounter hardships. However, once they are cheered up by something pleasant, they will feel as though the world was created for them.

As humans, we must learn to eliminate our karmic debts. Enduring hardships is one way to eliminate karmic debts. If you refuse to do so, why are you here in the Human Realm? The reason why you are here is to eliminate karmic debts by enduring hardships. Therefore, to eliminate karmic debts is to transform our state of mind and make us realise that in this very lifetime, we have to eliminate our karmic debts accumulated from previous lives, rather than carry them forward to the next lifetime.

As such, do not evade from any difficulties and the feeling of injustice, but to face them boldly. There are many individuals who accept adversities courageously and are able to get over them. On the contrary, those who are unable or refuse to take a bold face would end up with more sufferings.

Caller : How do we engender heartfelt repentance

Master Jun Hong Lu: You will have to be truthful when you repent and feel remorseful at the same time. However, this is possible only if you know the root of your wrongdoing. If you are not insightful of the misdeed, it will be impossible to ignite the sense of sincerity in your repentance. What do we mean by heartfelt? Heartfelt repentance will only come about if we understand the severity of our wrongdoing and how it was contrary to our principle coupled with the determination of not committing the same mistake again.

Caller: I understand.
