*MOVE SIDEWAYS*

An elderly Buddhist monk once asked a novice, “If taking a step forward or backward both spell death, what would you do?”  Without hesitation, the novice replied, “I shall move sideways.” The inspiration from this theory is: a side road is a path too.  Hence, when a path is filled with trammels, it may not be necessary for us to continue threading on it till night falls; when we see no hope on the path we are on, move sideways.  This is a widely known theory. However, many people who are living in this complex world would still be drawn into a swamp, as we would have forgotten this notion in the midst of our confusion.

*LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT*

Lord Buddha once told us, “We can only live in the present moment, TODAY, in this very moment."
We can neither move our life back to yesterday, nor can we hurry the arrival of tomorrow.  To live in the now is to live today.  Put in your best effort today, and you shall forget about your past sufferings; start learning Buddhism today and you shall be bestowed with tomorrow’s happiness.

[emoji259] Tuesday, 7th November 2017, is the 19th day of the Ninth Lunar Month, it is also the day to commemorate *Guan Yin Bodhisattva*'s renunciation! [emoji259]

[emoji271] Please perform more virtuous deeds and recitations, be a vegetarian, refrain from killing, free captive lives, do no evil and perform good deeds, and refrain from intimacy. [emoji271]

[emoji120] All Buddhist Friends (with or without altar at home) may recite up to *27* times _*Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Lifo)*_ on that day,  inclusive of the daily homework*.

Pray to the *Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva* to eliminate the negative karma on specific misdeeds that you have done in the "current life".

[emoji120] Deepest gratitude to the *Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva*, for the opportunity to recite more _*Lifo*_ to eliminate our negative karma.

Wishing all advancement in Buddhism practice, accumulation of meritorious blessings, wisdom and Dharma bliss.

Remember to prepare flowers and fruits for the day.

* Note: 1) Under no circumstances, ladies who are pregnant or observing postnatal confinement, and children below 5 years old should recite *more than 7 times _Lifo_* in total, inclusive of daily homework.

2) Buddhist friends *with altar at home* may offer *First Incense* from 12:01am until 2:00am on that day. Should you continue to recite scriptures throughout the night, you must keep the incense burning. You may recite _*Lifo*_ 24 hours round the clock on this day.

3)  For those *without altar at home*, you must offer "Heart Incense" before reciting _*Lifo*_. If the recitation of _*Lifo*_ is split into multiple sessions, the "Heart Incense" must be offered at the beginning of each session. It is best not to recite _*Lifo*_ between 10:00pm to 5:00am under this circumstances.

4) It is best to repent for specific misdeeds that you have done in the "current life", such as causing harm to others behind their backs, or viewing indecent videos or books, etc.

#Additional Note:
Recitation of this additional _*Lifo*_ is not compulsory. It would be good if you could do so. It is suggested that you match some Little Houses with it.

*NEGATIVE KARMA DERIVES FROM OUR SPEECH*

Negative karma derives from our speech. There is a saying in the traditional Chinese culture: “Disease goes in through the mouth; trouble comes out of the mouth”.  A successful custodian of the heart is one who is able guard one’s speech.  Let me share with you a few important words:

- When you DO NOT know something, do not say it simply
- When you DO know something, do not say much
- When you are disconcerted, say it slowly
- When you have nothing to say, don’t say anything at all

Master Jun Hong Lu’s Discourse (Question 126)

*TRUE CULTIVATION IS A TREASURE*

Q: In my dream, I was seated next to Bodhisattva and opposite a white bearded old man. We seemed to be discussing topics related to calamities. I asked what we should do and Chun Ti Bodhisattva said to me, “If sentient beings do not repent sincerely, they will not be able to avoid calamities”. I think what Bodhisattva meant was that cultivators would not be able to escape from calamities through recitations alone. If they do not cultivate wholeheartedly, calamities will inevitably befall them. Since I was not aware of what Chun Ti Bodhisattva looks like, I started to search for images of Chun Ti Bodhisattva after I woke up, and found a picture identical to the one in my dream. I had this dream around 2 years ago.

A: People who are insincere in their cultivation will not be able to ward off calamities. Why are there still so many cultivators who contract chronic diseases? Are they cultivating sincerely? They have to ask themselves. The Bodhisattva knows who the true cultivators are. Those who fail to cultivate truthfully will not be able to escape from destined calamities.

*MAKE A VOW WHEN SEEKING URGENT GUIDANCE FROM BODHISATTVA, YOUR QUERY WILL BE ANSWERED IN A DREAM*

Caller: When we need to deal with some critical matters, if all attempts to get through Master Lu’s line for totem reading and prayers to Bodhisattva proved futile, neither is there discourse through dreams to help resolve the issues in hand, what should we do?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Make a vow and your query will be answered. You should make a vow in front of Bodhisattva and pray for advice in your dream. Just say: “Bodhisattva, please enlighten me in my dream”. You will definitely receive the relevant guidance in your dream. However, if you have inappropriate sexual thoughts, Bodhisattva will not come into your dream because of your lewd thoughts.

*HOW IS WEALTH AMASSED THROUGH PERFORMING LIFE LIBERATION?*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned in 21 January Totem program that, “a person is able to amass wealth through performing life liberation.” Can you kindly elaborate on this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Amassing wealth in this context includes amassing one’s literary and virtuous talent which amounts to amassing one’s wealth. How is that so? The money spent on performing life liberation is never wasted as you have spent it on your virtuous achievement through saving others.

Caller: That’s right.

Master Jun Hong Lu: And, neither have you wasted your time. You have used your time for your virtuous achievement too. Aren’t you amassing your future wealth and possessions as a result? Based on the law of causality, what we give, we shall receive. As you have given away wealth, you shall gain wealth, hence, the more you give, the more wealth is amassed.

Caller: That’s right. Master, if a person wishes to pray for wealth, should he verbalise his intention to Guan Yin Bodhisattva during the life liberation ceremony?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Don’t do that. When you perform life liberation, a cause is sowed. Hence, the effect will surely come about. It is like the farmer who had sowed the watermelon seeds this year. The fruit can only be reaped the following year. He cannot be telling the seeds daily, “Please hurry up and give me watermelon as I need to make some money,” or “Hurry up! Grow now!” It doesn’t make any difference if he verbalises his intention or not; it takes time. Do you understand?

Caller: I understand. Thank you Master Lu, for answering my question.

*DO NOT VISUALISE ANOTHER PERSON WHEN RECITING _MANTRA TO UNTIE KARMIC KNOTS_*

Q: Can I visualise my son when I recite _*Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots*_ (Jie Jie Zhou) to resolve negative karmic ties with him?

A: It is not advisable to do so, because you will invite trouble if there is foreign spirit on him. It is through the power of Bodhisattva, instead of your imagination, that renders the recitation efficacious. As soon as you visualise him, the foreign spirit on his body will come to you.

*MENTALITY IN BESEECHING BODHISATTVA*

Caller:  A Buddhist friend is worried that the matter he is praying for will not materialise. Although he is confident that “all prayers shall be answered” by Guan Yin Bodhisattva, he is also worried that his karmic obstacles may be too substantial or the power of his vow may be insufficient.  Master, may I know how do we overcome this mentality?

Master Jun Hong Lu:   It is not an issue for us to have faith in Guan Yin Bodhisattva and at the same time worried that our karmic obstacles may be too substantial. However, to claim that we have faith in Guan Yin Bodhisattva but at the same time doubt if Bodhisattva is able to help us, is quite a different story and that is where the problem lies. Do you understand?

Caller:  I understand.  Thank you Master for answering my question.
