*USING MONEY THAT BELONGS TO THE DECEASED TO PERFORM MERITORIOUS DEEDS*

Caller: Master, in the event that we have inherited some money from a deceased person back in those days when we have yet to practise Buddhism, and now we would like to use a part of it to perform meritorious deeds. Should we perform the deed for ourselves or for the deceased (who has passed away for few years)?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course, it is to be performed for the deceased. You may perform recitation or life liberation. In this case, the life liberation is unique as the money being used had belonged to the deceased when he was alive. Should the money be used for this purpose, it is considered that he has performed meritorious deeds on behalf of the deceased.

Caller: I understand.

We need to cleanse the body when it is dirty.
Similarly, we need to drink plenty of water to cleanse the internal organs when they are dirty. According to the foundational work of Chinese medicine, _Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic_, water is the best medicine. Consuming plenty of water cleanses our internal body.

What is the best remedy for spiritual cleansing?
It is the Three Golden Buddhist Practices of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door: making vows, performing recitations of Buddhist scriptures and performing life liberation.

LATEST DISCOURSE BY GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA:
*ON THE ENLIGHTENMENT DAY OF GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA, YOU MAY RECITE UP TO 3 BATCHES (COMPRISE OF 25 IN EACH BATCH) OF _EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE_ (TOTAL OF 75) – EACH BATCH IS TO GO WITH 7 LITTLE HOUSES*

An abstract of the latest radio program goes as follows:

"My dear children, please know that it has been tough for your Master. For all of you, disobedient children who refused to be diligent in your practice, can you imagine the amount of negative karma that your Master needs to shoulder on your behalf?

All of you had sowed the seeds to the fruits of your misdeeds and when the fruits ripen, you desperately seek help from Guan Yin Bodhisattva and Master Lu. May I urge you to take time to think things through before acting so as not to sow the seed of bad affinity!

Time is of the essence, hence you must take your spiritual cultivation and recitation of Buddhist scriptures seriously. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will protect and bless you. On the 19th day of the 6th lunar, you must repent sincerely for the evil deeds you have committed. On this special day, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will be present to help forgive you of your sin.

You may recite up to 3 batches (25 times each batch) of _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_ ; on the said day and they are to be paired with the offering of 7 Little Houses for each batch recited. Please remember this is to repent for the misdeeds you have committed in this lifetime. When you pair this with the offering of Little House, the effect will be many times more. All of you, the sentient beings of the human realm, you are still creating new negative karma even in the midst of your unceasing spiritual cultivation. This is because you are not able to let go of the worldly gain and fame. Don’t you realise that it takes diligence on your part? Can you imagine just how tired your Master is taking care of all of you? It wasn’t my original intention to berate you, but my heart aches when I see your Master repeating himself time and again to the point of losing his voice, with his words falling on deaf ears!"

*THE "SPIRITUAL CODE 7829" IS ANOTHER COMBINATION OF BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES*

Caller: Master, there is a recent discourse shared which says, in the event of an emergency, we can apply the "Spiritual code 7829" which is made up of 7 x _Great Compassion Mantra_; 8 x _Heart Sutra_; 2 x _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_; 9 x _Jvala Mahaugra Dharani (Xiao Zai Ji Xiang Shen Zhou)_. Can this be used in general or for the specific case only?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Either is fine. In fact, this code “7829” is very efficacious... When there's something that you can't figure out that makes you suffer, try it out, “7829”.

Caller: I see. So this is another method shared by Guan Yin Bodhisattva?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes! Just like the combination of Buddhist scriptures in _Little House_, “7829” is another combination.
In reality, what does this mean?
Besides being a combination of Buddhist scriptures mentioned earlier, when you recite these Buddhist scriptures in the face of a difficult situation, it is the same as how you would add salt, sugar and food enhancer, etc. when cooking up a dish.

For instance, when faced with a situation, it is akin to being hungry-- I should not be serving you only buns without other dishes nor solely serving you other dishes without any buns to go with it. Do you understand this analogy?

Caller: I understand.

*ERADICATION OF PAST NEGATIVE KARMA IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH SUFFICIENT VIRTUES*

Caller: Master Lu, you mentioned recently that “One may have immense virtues, but he won’t be able to transcend the Six Realms of Rebirth without eliminating his karmic debts”. If virtues could be used to eliminate negative karma, what is the reason that it could not eliminate negative karma created in the past? Is it because our repentance is not enough? Please enlighten us.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Negative karma accumulated in the past could be eliminated by virtues. It’s difficult yet totally possible. However, a person’s negative karma cannot be fully eliminated if he has not accumulated enough of virtues.

Caller: I see.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Let me give you an example. When a white shirt has a soy sauce stain, it’s possible to remove it if you wash it straight away. However, if you leave it and try to wash it a month later, the stain will be permanent. Do you understand?

Caller: Yes, I understand. Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

*“BODHISATTVAS FEAR CAUSES, SENTIENT BEINGS FEAR EFFECTS”*

In cultivation, we should focus our efforts on the “cause” rather than to pray for the impending “effect”: “Bodhisattvas fear causes, sentient beings fear effects”.

Bodhisattvas would have contemplated on the effects of the deeds prior to committing it, whereas sentient beings carelessly commit causal actions without properly realising its retribution.  When the effects occur later, they will suffer and start to pray for Bodhisattva’s blessing.  That being said, we should focus our efforts on the "causes" rather than fervently praying for favorable "effects" to come about.

*CAN MERITORIOUS BLESSINGS OFFSET KARMIC OBSTACLES*

Caller: Master Lu, can meritorious blessings and karmic obstacles offset each other?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Meritorious blessings can offset a portion of karmic obstacles, but not entirely.

Caller: In that case, do we eliminate the remaining portions through recitation of the _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The remaining portions are the old karma that we take along with us in death. This also refers to karma that we cannot eliminate. Meritorious blessings are like an eraser while karma is like black marks written on paper. Although an eraser may remove the majority of such marks, they will not be completely eradicated. Do you understand?

Caller: I understand now, Master Lu.

*SELECTION OF COLOUR FOR DOORS*

Question: What colour is suitable for the main door and doors of an apartment?

Answer: Lighter shades are better, as it represents cleanliness; while darker shades are less ideal as it represents grimness which could entail some degree of disaster and unhappiness. It is just like prison doors which are usually dark in colour; if an iron gate is painted black, it represents obstacles.

*IS IT GOOD TO HAVE OUR NEGATIVE KARMAS ACTIVATED EARLIER?*

Caller: For Buddhist practitioners, is it good to have our negative karmas activated earlier? As with that, it not only allows us to grow in wisdom but also to eliminate negative karmas in advance, hence the opportunity to repay our karmic debts while we are young. Is that right, Master Lu?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is indeed good to repay karmic debts earlier for those who are enlightened or with a higher state of mind. However, for those who are not so determined in learning Buddhism, the sufferings that occur one after another since they started to perform recitation, may cause them to waver in their faith, and start wondering, "I don't even need to undergo so much sufferings prior to my practising Buddhism". Eventually, their desire to practise will be affected and they might even stop learning Buddhism for good. Don't you think you are literally cutting off their wisdom-life? Moreover, a lot of those retributions that usually happen to aged people on their deathbed began to ripen earlier. Do you think they could endure that?

Caller: I understand now.
