Q:  Due to work commitment, I am only able to go to the Guan Yin Hall during my off days. Once, when I was racing against time to go to Guan Yin Hall, there was a voice in my head telling me, "You have no idea that when you scurried off to the Guan Yin Hall, you will actually get to eliminate quite a lot of karmic obstacles along the journey."

A:  Your purpose of going to Guan Yin Hall is to perform recitations, make great vows and perform life liberation, all these will result in elimination of karmic obstacles. Similarly, those who attended Dharma Convention would also have their bad karmas eliminated.  You can be certain that elimination of karmic obstacles have started to take place when you are on your way to perform meritorious deeds.  For instance, several bad guys planned to rob a bank, don't you think they are already creating bad karma while on their way to commit the crime?

Question 10: Activation of Individual Karmic Obstacles: Does it lead to the eruption of shared karma within the family?

Question: Does it lead to the eruption of shared karma within the family when an individual’s negative karma is being triggered? If someone in the family diligently eliminates his negative karmic debts, will it also clear some of the negative karma within the family members?

Master Lu: Yes, it will. When a person’s negative karma erupted, it will certainly cause a common reaction within the family members. Let me cite you a simple example; if a child falls sick, the father will have to take leaves and the mother has to tend to the child. The father will also have to pay for the medical bills, is this not affecting the whole family? When any one of the family members is seriously ill, the whole family will be unlucky. This is known as an individual’s negative karma being spiralled into a common cause within a family, isn’t it? Let there be no outbreak of karmic emergence to any one of the family member, in this way, the whole family is safe and sound. Therefore, we have to understand that a person who has performed many good deeds will benefit the people around him, as the Chinese saying goes: “A person’s promotion will enable those around him to ride on his coattails”. In the same context, one person practises the Dharma, his whole family will ascend to heaven.

Caller: Master Lu, how do we cultivate magnanimity of minds? I understand that by fostering greater sympathy and compassion, we can cultivate magnanimity. Are there other ways to achieve this?

Master Jun Hong Lu: To cultivate magnanimity, one should learn to endure humiliation, and gain great control of his emotions. These are all very important.

Caller: Master, I feel that I am not quite able to endure hardship in this world. How do I better myself in this aspect?

Master Jun Hong Lu: We have to understand that hardship in life is a form of training. It is a type of self-mortification that leads us to gaining wisdom. The notion of suffering is merely an emotional experience; once it is over, it is gone.

Caller: I feel that the other Buddhist friends are more adapted to enduring hardships, but not me.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Your thoughts make you who you are. So, if you start to think otherwise, you will definitely be able to endure any hardship. No big deal! But, if you think, “Oh! I am not a person who can endure hardship”, one day if adversity truly strikes, you will not be able to take it. On the contrary, if you often tell yourself that, “I am all geared for any hardships”, you will be able to take it in your stride and do your utmost when adversities strike.

Caller: I understand now.

Appended below is the sharing from Joanna shi xiong.

"I want to thank you XLFM for helping us to gain the knowledge to eliminate the karmic obstacles.
I get to know XLFM in March 2015 and I din bother to know more into it until I received 2 tickets to April fa hui that I tell myself I must attend cos I start to feel uneasy like something is going to happen. So I start to read on the heart sutra daily without knowing the proper way but I wish upon Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva to enlighten me the right directions. During this period I was stuck in a job that pay very low and I come upon another company hiring the same post and I write in for interview and I immediately get the job in the shortest time. I was happy but I still feel uneasy and in May 2015 my husband falls sick and is diagnosed with leukemia in June 2015 and I knew what to do rightaway. I wish for him to get through this by changing my daily 1 meal diet to 不杀生 and also introduced XLFM to my husband and asked him to recite 大悲咒,心经,往生咒,消灾吉祥咒,礼佛大忏悔文,准提咒 during his chemo period and thru 2nd chemo he was so sick that he was warded in ICU for almost a week and I told him to wish to do life liberation in the next 5 years for 2000 fishes per year and to bring him to attend fa hui in 2016. After doing 4 rounds of chemo he's better and in remission. Every quarter he needs to go back and do bone marrow biopsy to check on his results and everytime we hear from the doctor is good news but in Jan 2017 he suffered from stroke and was warded for 18 days and were told by doctors and nurses that he has to be warded in rehabilitation centre or get a maid to care for him as he needs to be fed and on diapers as he cannot get down the bed. I was so depressed cos all this while he's not working since 2015 and I pray to Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva to help him to recover and I will eat more vegetable diet and true enough he after I made the wish on the 15thdays he can get down from the bed and toilet on his own and he can feed himself slowly in hospital and can go home if his condition improve without having to admit to rehab or a maid to care for. After 1-2 months rest at home he can take public transport all on his own again. His bone marrow biopsy result in april 2017 also good. Today he will be doing bone marrow biopsy again and I pray that his results will be as good so that we can change to 6 months once instead of doing every 4 months.
During this period both of us attended the fa hui together in 2016 & 2017 and this year we managed to do life liberation during the 观音诞 also.
Recently I also come across that one can help to recite for child and I help to recite heart sutra and 准提神咒 for my 15yrs old daughter too as she did not do well in her studies in May and quite rebellious during this period but she changed ever since I do that and she's a better person now.
I want to thanks XLFM and the guidance the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva has enlightened in me n my family
I hope by sharing my experience can help others too.

Words of Wisdom

Negative karma derives from our speech. There is a saying in the traditional Chinese culture: “Disease goes in through the mouth; trouble comes out of the mouth”.  A successful custodian of the heart is one who is able guard one’s speech.  Let me share with you a few important words:

- When you DO NOT know something, do not say it simply
- When you DO know something, do not say much
- When you are disconcerted, say it slowly
- When you have nothing to say, don’t say anything at all

Caller: With Dharma cultivator within a household, the family will be protected. To what extent can the blessings be imparted to our family members? Is it measured by the amount of negative karma eliminated or any other standard?

Master Jun Hong Lu: “Shielding family members at home” could be explained in the following example: when you practise the Dharma diligently and profoundly to such an extent that your family members perceived you as having attained Buddhahood, which in turn transform them to be more cultured and less quarrelsome; such transformation in them is a form of shelter for them. Another form of blessing is when they are influenced by you and follow suit to become a Dharma cultivator themselves. By doing so, their negative karmic debts will also be eliminated very quickly. “Shielding or Protection” does not mean you are able to use your aura to bless them; but using your aura, virtues, kindness and good deeds to influence them into Dharma cultivation.

Caller: Master, you read my Totem some time ago and advised me clearly on my daily recitation of scriptures and Little Houses. You also mentioned that I seem to have inadequate blessings from my past lives. Are there any scriptures that I need to recite to gain blessings?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is absolutely possible to gain more blessings through recitation of Buddhist scriptures. In fact, when you recite Little Houses, the Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra and when you refrain from doing bad deeds, you are actually accumulating blessings. So are performing life liberations, performing recitations, making great vows, all of which are effective means for gaining blessings and longevity.
