Depending on how they settle this issue, this can be a storm in a teacup or a pandora's box as it involves the tripartite policy, foreign talent, and private sector intervention. Irony is that they did this when MoM was promoting "know your rights"

SporeInc can't afford to have "FT united" organising strikes now and then, whenever they have some unhappiness or disputes,
neither can it afford to have "localbred" Sporean workers, having the idea that strikes are effective means to achieving labor dispute objectives
This type of jobs at current cost bring benefits to locals. Not exactly the type of workers we would like to block so i feel there should't be U-turn in current policy for them. There is some disturbance but i feel the problem is grossly exaggerated. This is really very very minor compared to other countries industrial actions.

In term of scale, it is definitely very minor. In term of implication, it is not so minor IMO. In fact it is critical for the settlement which serve as precedent case for future industrial disputes.
IMO, probably people are observing e.g. SIA pilots and opposition parties members

Ah Tiong not so simple to handle.
If you look at the ferrari incident it created a big anti-FT sentiment, chinese mfa had to come in to make a statement to ask it's citizens in spore to follow the law.
If you look at this incident straits times report today that a chinese diplomat actually went down to the dormitories to talk to the drivers.
Why both cases like that? You get the feeling maybe they were hesitant to act and went and got reassurances before proceeding further. Could all these have resulted from 2004 "Taiwan visit" ?
In future cases you may see similarities regarding serious issues with china nationals, the chinese diplomat have to step in.
If I read the Chinese government correctly, their position will be that Chinese citizens working in foreign country have to follow the local law. Michael Fay were charged and caned despite the US President's interceding then.
If SG government now give face to China, what would the whole world see the SG government?
Taiwan and South China sea issues are sovereignty issues which will provoke strong reaction from China or in fact any country. So linking the SMRT issue as high as these two sovereignty issues is not appropriate IMO.
