Appears that they don't even have enough human capital to reduce on breakdowns or maintain a respectable maintenance regime... now they're venturing into MRO?

And now they are venturing into telecom biz by working with OMG...OMG!

On closer looks, it says "work exclusively with OMG in connection with OMG's bid for the 4th wireless telecommunications carrier licence (the "Telco Licence") in Singapore". I interpret it to mean OMG will bid for the licence , SMRT is just a partner as it has extensive media presence and commuter reach. So it is not a JV relationship, which means if OMG wins, SMRT will benefit, if OMG don't win, SMRT will not suffer loses. Cool Looks like quite a good deal if I read it correctly.

Anyway, kudos to the mgmt team for their effort in looking out for opportunity outside fare business.

SMRT can bring "bundling" and "hubbing" to a whole new level....

Next time we might see something like the following marketing taglines:

"Buy an iphone and ride for free! "
"Call and ride..."
"Surf and ride.."

SMRT's tie-up with OMGTEL for mobile licence bid could be game changer

SINGAPORE (April 16): SMRT Corp ( Financial Dashboard)'s partnership with OMGTEL to bid for the right to become Singapore's fourth mobile operator could be a game changer for the rail company, says Maybank Kim Eng.

"We believe this could be a potential positive for SMRT if well executed," Maybank Kim Eng analyst Derrick Heng wrote in a note today.

"Not known to many, SMRT is an existing facilities-based operator licensed by the Infocomm Development Authority and is not entirely new to the telco business," he said.

"We believe that offering better mobile network connectivity to rail commuters will be a very strong value proposition."

OMGTEL is a unit of Consistel, which built the Singapore Sports Hub's wireless network.

Consistel has reportedly raised $150 million of the $1 billion it said it needed to roll out a mobile network in Singapore.

On its part, SMRT has indicated it may invest $34.5 million in OMGTEL.

"Around a decade ago, SMRT harnessed its strong traffic throughput on its rail network to develop its retail and advertising businesses. This proved highly successful," said Heng.

"Its latest venture should equally be able to tap SMRT's two million rail commuters a day."

SMRT and OMG team up to bid for Singapore's 4th telco licence

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/busi...86138.html

SINGAPORE: Transport operator SMRT has announced that it has entered an agreement with OMGTEL (OMG) to work exclusively with OMG in connection with OMG's bid for Singapore's fourth wireless telecommunications (telco) carrier licence.

OMG is a company incorporated by local tech firm Consistel on Oct 20, 2014, for the purpose of bidding for the telco licence. It had originally announced its intentions to be the Republic's fourth telco in October.

Under the announcement posted on the Singapore Exchange on Wednesday (Apr 15), SMRT and OMG will collaborate on the provision of goods and services, and will seek to leverage SMRT's extensive media presence and commuter reach.

"The above transaction is not expected to have a material impact on the company's financial performance for the financial year ending Mar 31, 2016," SMRT said.

The transport operator also announced that it was offered an opportunity to invest up to S$34.5 million via an option to subscribe for shares in OMG. The exercise of the option will be at SMRT's election, and subject to OMG obtaining the telco licence, satisfactory due diligence on OMG, and the execution of definitive agreements between SMRT and OMG, among others, it said.

Hmm, in looking to move into the telco space, it seems to send the signal that the transport market might have reached the point where growth would be limited.

I do not think so that the transport industry in Spore is reaching its limit. IIFC, there are on going plans for the MRT network to be double in size by year 2030. Beside, with growing population, demands for transport service is definitely going to increase over time. The problem faced by PTO is that the industry is highly regulated. PTO has no power to increase fares on their own, and fares is a very sensitive topics, which means its increase over time will be fairly muted. So, it is the right thing to do to diversify into non-fare businesses. In the case of CDG, they expand overseas and is now the 2nd largest transport company in the world. SMRT is taking similar approach but into related industries instead of transport industry. So far yet to see significant impact from these investments but given enough time, I am confident that something good will show.
