Consistel subsidiary announces bid to be 4th telco, has S$400m funding commitments
24 Mar 2016 14:13
By Amit Roy Choudhury

CONSISTEL subsidiary OMGtel formally announced on Thursday that it is in the race to become Singapore's fourth telco. The company has appointed the former president and CEO of Lenovo, Bill Amelio, as the new CEO.

It has also appointed OCBC Bank as its financial adviser.

Masoud Bassiri, chairman of Consistel, said that the company has already secured commitments to around S$400 million of funding out of the S$1 billion that it is looking to raise before the spectrum auction in the third quarter of this year.

Regarding funding, Mr Bassiri said the company is confident of getting commitments for the rest of the money by June this year. It is looking at a mix of funding options, from term loans to equity funding. OCBC, at its financial adviser, is assisting OMGtel in this regard, he added.

Is MR, more competitive than OMGTel? I am not quite sure.

Telco technologies are owned by suppliers, thus technically, there is no barrier for OMGTel, to deploy similar network as MR. It is also little barrier for OMGTel to become a fiber RSP. What is lacking, is probably the experience and involvement of the HetNet trial in Jurong, but OMGTel has the advantage of in-door coverage, which is the most difficult part of national coverage for the new telco...

MyRepublic has better chance as 4th telco player in Singapore: DBS Vickers

SINGAPORE (March 29): DBS Vickers reckons that MyRepublic has "much better chances" than Consistel of becoming the republic's fourth telco.

Consistel has announced that it wants to build 4.5G network at capex of US$1 billion and has roped in OCBC bank as its financial adviser. Management also claims that it is close to securing $400 million of funding.

The broker also sees a return on investment (ROI) of less than 10% for Consistel, compared with a possible 25% ROI for MyRepublic, should it become Singapore’s fourth telco.

In the absence of a heterogeneous network - a key focus area for Singapore’s Smart Nation project - the broker reckons this will put Consistel in an unfavourable competitive position.

ViewQwest says broadband service will resume at the end of the week

SINGAPORE — Subscribers to ViewQwest’s broadband service who had problems connecting to the Internet over the past few days will have to wait until the end of this week before services start running again, the company said in a Facebook post on Monday.

This is because the boutique Internet service provider is arranging on-site visits to replace the modems of all affected subscribers, and all replacements are expected to be completed by the end of the week, it said.

Surfing speeds on Singapore's free public Wi-Fi service Wireless@SG will be more than doubled to 5Mbps by the end of this year, as the Government sees the network as a key enabler of Singapore's Smart Nation vision.

The number of Wireless@SG hot spots will also be doubled to 20,000 by 2018 to better complement telcos' 4G networks in meeting consumers' rising demand for mobile broadband.

Wireless@SG is quite a famous white elephant, who cares if its speed double or triples when it's completely unreliable?

I have paid attention to it for a while. I noticed that it is widely deployed in common spaces e.g. mall, libraries, food courts, hospitals, and of course the MRTs. I also noticed that some old coffee shops are deployed too.

I don't think it is a white-elephant. I agree it is not as reliable as the mobile broadband, but a good supplementary service. It allows us to save data usage without comprising user experience, with the mobile broadband as backup. I have enabled it, and the hand-over is seamless, and often done without notice.

I agreed it was a white elephant some years back but nowadays it really work at least for simple whatapps, FB, gmail and even instagram.

Free Wi-Fi on two service 176 buses
14 Apr 2016 09:00
By Lester Hio

Two buses have become the first in Singapore to offer free Wi-Fi to passengers.

The buses, part of service 176 plying between Bukit Merah and Bukit Panjang, will allow commuters to access the Wireless@SG network, thanks to a collaboration between telco M1 and the Infocomm Development Authority, as part of nationwide trials on the Heterogeneous Network (HetNet).

The bus pilot scheme was launched yesterday and both buses have signs advertising the service.

HetNet is a new wireless system that allows users to automatically switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, like 4G, in order to minimise surfing slowdowns and disruptions. The buses' Wi-Fi service is open to any user who has a Wireless@SG account and a device capable of logging on to the network. Singtel and StarHub users can also make use of the service.

Hi cf, circles asia is part of liberty wireless. Not sure if there is any difference. Off my memory liberty/circles was scheduled to launch in dec 2015 so they are pretty late in execution/delay due to other reasons.
