A great man has passed away at 79. RIP Mr. Andy Grove...

Intel mastermind, Silicon Valley statesman Andy Grove dead at 79

SAN FRANCISCO (March 21): Andy Grove, the Silicon Valley elder statesman who made Intel into the world's top chipmaker and helped usher in the personal computer age, died on Tuesday at age 79, Intel said.

The company did not describe the circumstances of his death but Grove, who endured the Nazi occupation of Hungary during World War Two, living under a fake name, and came to the United States to escape the chaos of Soviet rule, had suffered from Parkinson's.

New virtual reality app Timelooper takes you back in history
Posted by: CityFarmer - 15-03-2016, 09:59 AM - Forum: Others - No Replies

What an interesting app! All the data is available in the web now, but putting all together at a right time and location, means totally different experience... Big Grin

New virtual reality app Timelooper takes you back in history

LONDON — Imagine watching frantic shopkeepers busily extinguish the Great Fire of London, or sheltering from Nazi bombing raids during the Blitz.

Now, thanks to a new virtual reality app, you can travel back in time to be immersed in these events.

The Timelooper app allows users to experience key moments in London history with just a smartphone and a cardboard headset.

For example, when Timelooper cofounder Andrew Feinberg visits the Tower of London, a historic castle on the banks of London’s Thames River, he doesn’t queue up with hordes of tourists to catch a glimpse of the royal family’s crown jewels. Instead, he uses Timelooper’s time travel tourism app to experience the tower over 750 years ago, in 1255.

Instead of seeing a busy London tourist site, Mr Feinberg sees a medieval marketplace, a formidable fortress, even an elephant being led down a path.

Internet by light promises to leave Wi-Fi eating dust
Posted by: CityFarmer - 24-02-2016, 09:34 AM - Forum: Others - No Replies

Interesting demo, but the technology had been explored before in Singapore class room. The speed was an advantage, but the user density was a pain. Wifi served better in a class of 20+ over the technology. I reckon, the researcher might already solved the density issue in the demo...

Internet by light promises to leave Wi-Fi eating dust

BARCELONA — Connecting your smartphone to the web with just a lamp — that is the promise of Li-Fi, featuring Internet access 100 times faster than Wi-Fi with revolutionary wireless technology.

French start-up Oledcomm demonstrated the technology at the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest mobile fair, in Barcelona. As soon as a smartphone was placed under an office lamp, it started playing a video.

The big advantage of Li-Fi, short for “light fidelity”, is its lightning speed.

Laboratory tests have shown theoretical speeds of over 200 Gbps — fast enough to “download the equivalent of 23 DVDs in one second”, the founder and head of Oledcomm, Mr Suat Topsu, told AFP.

“Li-Fi allows speeds that are 100 times faster than Wi-Fi” which uses radio waves to transmit data, he added.

Taking to the skies soon: Public service drones

Taking to the skies soon: Public service drones

SINGAPORE — From maritime search and rescue operations to combating dengue, drones will be increasingly deployed by public agencies to improve their operations.

Currently, more than two dozen uses of such devices are undergoing conceptualisation and proof-of-concept (POC) trials, said the Ministry of Transport (MOT), which is leading the inter-agency Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) committee facilitating the trials.

The ministry held a media briefing today (Feb 4) to showcase the use of drones to enhance some public services. It also announced that a tender will be called at the end of the month to invite commercial vendors to bid for a master contract for UAS services.

This arrangement would enable better economies of scale to be achieved from the public agencies’ collective demand for such services, said the MOT

Meet the man who is making virtual reality ‘feel’ more real
Posted by: CityFarmer - 04-02-2016, 09:24 AM - Forum: Others - No Replies

VR, is a booming tech, with many very interesting progresses e.g. Ultrahaptics... Big Grin

Meet the man who is making virtual reality ‘feel’ more real

LONDON — As a student at the University of Bristol, Mr Tom Carter became obsessed with a seemingly impossible notion: Letting people feel and manipulate virtual objects. A professor turned him on to an esoteric concept using ultrasound to simulate tactile sensations, that was floated and abandoned back in the 1970s.

Today, Mr Carter, 29, is co-founder and chief technology officer of Ultrahaptics, which uses clever algorithms and an array of ultrasound emitters to simulate a range of feelings: Tiny bubbles bursting on your fingertips, a stream of liquid passing over your hand, the outlines of three-dimensional shapes. Mr Carter says dozens of companies making everything from computer games to cars and appliances are testing the technology, an example of what computer scientists call haptic feedback (haptic in Ancient Greek basically meant coming into contact with something).

07 Jan 2016 09:12
[LONDON] Mr Donald Trump will scrap ??700 million (S$1.4 billion) of planned investments in Britain if he is banned from entering the country, a spokesman for the United States billionaire's business empire said on Wednesday (Jan 6).

  2015 Portfolio Performance
Posted by: krowten - 30-12-2015, 09:38 AM - Forum: Others - Replies (9)

2015 is coming to an end.  It is timely to review the portfolio performance for the year.

Since I started keeping a proper record in 2013, my portfolio will be in red for the year for the first time after 2 years of gain.

Year-to-date, the value of my portfolio has declined by 0.9%.  The loss is small because I have kept about 50% of the fund in fixed deposit in early 2015, in anticipation that this will be a bad year.

Looking back, a few bad mistakes could possibly be avoided if I am more diligent and less emotional.  Greed and fear remain my biggest enemy.

I hope 2016 will be a good year for all the buddies here.

Wish all of you a happy and prosperous New Year.
