For those who served NS, we knew what is team spirit & cooperation. In providing the logistics support (setting up of tents, guide rails) for queues at Padang for MM Lee's funeral, the army shows how efficient Singaporeans are.

Below videos shows our spirit.

Hitchhiking robot embarking on coast-to-coast tour across US
Posted by: CityFarmer - 20-07-2015, 09:19 AM - Forum: Others - No Replies

An interesting project to share...Big Grin

Hitchhiking robot embarking on coast-to-coast tour across US

BOSTON — With its thumb raised skyward and a grin on its digital face, the robotic creation of two researchers in Canada is about to start a hitchhiking journey across the US.

The humanoid robot named hitchBOT has already caught rides across Canada and in Europe, relying on the kindness and curiosity of strangers. But today (July 17), it starts its first US tour, setting out from Salem, Massachusetts, with dreams of San Francisco ahead.

Along the way, it hopes to see some quintessential American sites, including Times Square, Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon.

The kid-size robot is immobile on its own, so it gets from place to place by being schlepped around by strangers. Travelers can pass it off to others they meet, or leave it at a gas station or shop. They can just leave it seated on its kickstand with its thumb raised.

Ideally, the creators hope, drivers won’t leave the bot along busy roads and will charge the battery when it runs low. Otherwise, there are no rules.

“We want to see what people do with this kind of technology when we leave it up to them,” said Professor Frauke Zeller, one of the creators and an assistant professor in professional communication at Toronto’s Ryerson University. “It’s an art project in the wild — it invites people to participate.”

On the outside, hitchBOT looks like it’s built for play rather than performance. It has a bucket for a body and bendy foam limbs capped by yellow gardening gloves and matching rubber boots. The whimsical attire is intentional, its makers said, to make it approachable and to deter potential thieves.

“It has a really low-tech look to it, something we dubbed the `yard-sale aesthetic’,” said Professor David Harris Smith, the other creator and an assistant professor in communication studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. “The head is actually an acrylic cake-saver.”

Designed to be a talking travel companion, the robot can toss out factoids and carry limited conversation. It can be charming and cheeky, its makers said.

So far, there are no signs of anything nefarious done to the robot, but there’s also no proof. Its creators intentionally cast their gaze aside.

“We want to be very careful to avoid surveillance technologies with this; that’s not what we’re trying to do here,” Pro Smith said.

A GPS in the robot can track its location, and a camera randomly snaps photos about every 20 minutes to document its travels. But the team behind the robot seeks permission from people in the photos before posting them to social media, where hitchBOT has built a devoted fan base.

More than 30,000 people follow the robot on Twitter, and dozens have posted their own selfies with it. Researchers are culling data from social media to study how people interact with a robot that needs their help, unlike traditional robots designed to help them.

Among the chief questions researchers are asking, Prof Zeller said, is whether robots can trust humans.

During past travels, the robot has attended a comic convention and a wedding, and it had its portrait painted in the Netherlands. It once spent a week with a heavy metal band.

The cross-country tour of Canada took 26 days, spanning more than 6,000 miles. As for the US trip, researchers don’t know how long it will take, or what will happen along the way.

“We want to create something that has a bit of narrative to it, a sense of adventure,” Prof Smith said. “We don’t really know what’s going to happen.” AP

  Are India's medical schools broken?
Posted by: Behappyalways - 17-06-2015, 10:36 AM - Forum: Others - Replies (1)

Fake degrees

About 45 percent of the people in India who practice medicine have no formal training, according to the Indian Medical Association. These 700,000 unqualified doctors have been found practicing at some of India's biggest hospitals, giving diagnoses, prescribing medicines and even conducting surgery.

Balwant Rai Arora, a Delhi resident in his 90s, said in an interview that he issued more than 50,000 fake medical degrees from his home until his forgery ring was broken up by the police in 2011. Each buyer paid about $100 for a degree from fictitious colleges. Arora was twice convicted and jailed for forgery.

"There is a shortage of doctors in India. I am just helping people with some medical experience get jobs,'' said Arora. "I haven't done anything wrong."
.....................................................................
"The market has been flooded with doctors so poorly trained they are little better than quacks," Rao told Reuters.

......................................................................
There were professors who existed only on paper, he alleged, and "no clinics and no lectures" for students in the medicine and surgery departments. Conditions were unsanitary at the hospital, and pigs and donkeys roamed the campus, he wrote. The writer also alleged that students had to pay bribes to pass exams.

"We are not taught in this medical college," the letter stated. Students have graduated "without even attending a single day." The writer said the letter had been sent to various government agencies and health officials.

  RT LLP / RT Network
Posted by: butcher - 11-06-2015, 05:05 PM - Forum: Others - No Replies

Any fellow valuebuddies heard of RT LLP or RT Network (formerly known as LTC LLP), a small local mid size audit firm.

Anyone deals with them before?

They have a great vision of forming a Singapore based accountancy network known as RT Network which will be headquartered in Singapore. And should have the support of the relevant authorities as they also would like to see a Singapore based network organisation to challenge the likes of other mid tiers like BDO, RSM, Grant Thornton, Baker Tilly etc. This giant vision will take decades of growth to achieve that.

Man sues Chinese actress Zhao Wei over her intense stare in TV show

Man sues Chinese actress Zhao Wei over her intense stare in TV show

BEIJING — Rules making it easier to file lawsuits in China have led to a new concern over frivolous claims, such as one in which a man says actress Zhao Wei stared at him too intensely through his TV set.

The regulations making it more difficult for courts to reject lawsuits took effect May 1, leading to an increase in cases nationwide last month of 29 per cent compared with same period last year, to just over one million cases, according to the Supreme People’s Court.

The registration system requires courts to accept legitimate lawsuits when they are filed or clearly state the reasons for rejecting them, and citizens have the right to appeal the decisions.

“Previously, it was difficult for administrative cases, such as people suing governments, to be accepted,” said Mr Li Heping, a Beijing lawyer.

India says state law minister arrested for fake law degree

NEW DELHI — Police said they arrested the New Delhi state law minister today (June 9) for allegedly holding a fake degree in law and registering as an attorney in the Indian capital, a move strongly condemned by the minister’s party.

Jitendra Singh Tomar faces charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and forging documents, said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to seven years.

According to Mr Bhagat, Tomar said he obtained a law degree from a university in Bihar state, but police found it to be fake. The Bar Association of New Delhi registered a police complaint against Tomar today.

Several Indian politicians, including some in the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, face similar charges.
