Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think investors are overly sold this stock... SSG barely has any exposure in China... Even if we take into account the joint venture that SSG recently went into, the US$6 mil equates to only ~S$0.0056 per share. (I'm usin the US$-S$ exchange rate today divided by the no. Of existing shares issued)

I hope the panic continues! Then I can grab some more at even lower prices! Woots!!!

Great singapore sale about over liao. At 86.5 cents, its still a good buy, considering the quality of its earnings. Not forgetting:
1. SSG has 38 stores today compared to 33 last year. This increases the sales "catchment" area.
2. RM has depreciated to all time low. That translates to lower cost of sales.

Grab while price is still good, rather than when it is fair.
NTUC has upgraded its distribution centre, a hub that comparable to Sheng Siong one, in technologies, and purposes. Sheng Siong spent S$65 million, and NTUC spent S$350 million. Sheng Siong distribution centre build-up area is about half a million sq ft, comparing with NTUC 1.2 million sq ft.

Both have an important edge on logistics cost, and with a shorter supply chain, with their distribution centres. NTUC and Sheng Siong, will win the game, in their respective customer segments...

New FairPrice Hub to give enterprise boost in productivity

SINGAPORE — The new S$350 million FairPrice Hub in Joo Koon will not just bring together the social enterprise’s headquarters and distribution centre, it will also result in cost savings being passed on to consumers as operations are streamlined.

Speaking at the opening of the Hub, NTUC’s chief executive officer Seah Kian Peng said: “Logistics cost is one part of the entire cost of doing business … The supply chain is an important part. So, if we’re able to lower this cost, this is will allow us to operate more efficiently and pass down this cost to make sure that the prices of all our products remain more competitive.”

Calling the 1.2 million sq ft building “state-of-the-art”, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was at the launch, said NTUC FairPrice has played an important role in nation building by keeping the cost of living low while offering essential goods at “a fair price”.

This is not directly related to investment but I feel the need to share my unexpected experience with Sheng Shiong.

My grandmother passed away a few weeks ago. Her funeral was held at a HDB void deck just across Sheng Shiong. On the second day of the funeral, a staff (assumed to be a cashier) came over and handed $200 as 白金 to us. She said (in Mandarin), "please accept this. It's from Sheng Shiong". We were taken by surprised. At first, we thought it could be because the staff at Sheng Shiong knows my grandmother. However, it turns out to be not the case. We were deeply touched by their kind gesture and support.

We later found out that Sheng Shiong is known (i have not verified though) to give 白金 as a show of support and respect to funerals located within their vicinity. This simple and kind gesture by their management is highly commendable!

I reckon, it is part of the company social responsibility initiatives. "取之于社会 用之于社会" (Translation: taken from community and give back to community)  is an important value for corporate long term sustainability.

HONESTBEE, a homegrown on-demand grocery delivery startup, has bagged US$15 million in Series A funding led by Silicon Valley-based tech investment firm Formation 8.

Co-founder Isaac Tay told BT on Tuesday: "(With the money), we intend to expand across Asia. We recently launched in Hong Kong and will be extending our services to Taiwan and other parts of Asia."

Launched here in August, honestbee offers the delivery of over 15,000 products from supermarkets such as NTUC FairPrice and Sheng Siong as well as specialty stores such as Pet Lovers Center, Gastronomia Da Paolo, Mmmm!, The Butcher's Dog, Crystal Wines, GNC and Four Seasons Organic. Redmart - needs to hold inventory, manage it, etc. Higher margins but there's inventory risks.

Honestbee - every transaction is a potential profit. They may have a smaller market share but seems like there are more profitable. I think their model is similar to Food Panda.

Hmmm Food Panda delivers from restaurants, Honestbee from grocery stores.

Anyone has any idea how this business model can be applied to other things? Medical supplies? Contact lenses? furniture?
Sheng Siong 9 month result is announced, earlier than I expected. The net profit grew much faster than revenue, showed that the net margin continue to improve. The nine-months gross margin and net margin are 24.6% and 7.3% respectively.

So far so good, both existing biz, as well as the expansion. There are more to come.

Time to revive the report, and update the valuation.
