I already missed some good profit.

Yes, I have commented on that before in this SS forum, that the SS supermarkets layout is a typical Chinaman messy layout, very very cramp & aisle so narrow that only one person can pass through at a time. The wet section - the hygiene level has yet to catch up with NTUC & cold Storage standards, cos I have seen butchers touching fish/meat with no gloves on.

But I have also came across commentaries that say that those aunties, housewives etc who used to go wet market to buy food every week would not be too bothered by SS layout (or rather they would love it), and that obviously pple who harp about SS supermarket messy layout are those who don't do wet market shopping.

So...I don't really know if shoppers mind the SS supermarket messy cramp layout.

I have to admit that I didn't shop at SS regularly, but only visited a few of the shops.

Generally, IMO, the layout didn't seem messy to me, which is comparable to NTUC Fairprice, but definitely more cramp than Cold Storage and Fairprice Xtra.

I do agree with the view on wet section. Wet market survived amid the rapid growth of supermarket, for a good reason. There are services provided, which supermarket didn't. SS provided both options in its supermarket, IMO.

One observation is on the shopping basket, with a wheel and long handle. It save a lot of effort, within the space provided. A gesture shows that SS management care for their shopper, especially those old aunties, and uncles.

(sharing view, and vested)

P/S: I recalled I saw 4 mobile numbers have been provided for feedback, from shop supervisor, all the way to Mr. LIM HOCK CHEE, the CEO of the company.
Actually you just need to ask the aunties and housewives where they shop and why Smile I always believe in listening or placing more weightage to people doing the actual work.

Since the days when my mum became paralysed, I had to do the groceries myself. If I didn't do the grocery shopping, my bro would (though he would turn to online).

As a guy doing grocery shopping regularly, layouts are hardly relevant to my shopping. Whats more important (and I think its also the same for some other shoppers) is the accessibility and (to some extent) price. And, its no (or may be little) frills.

Honestly, cramp layout or not, food is still food. Buy home cook, also no one will ask if buy from cramp or spacious supermarket. Big Grin What I quite appreciate about SS is the hours they operate. Makes it easier to buy veggie late night after work, than having to wake up and rush to wet market to buy early morning.

I suppose the demographics of the SS consumers are typically the neighbourhood auntie/ uncle and working class people like myself. After working ot, really not many choices for grocery shopping. Huh Aside from NTUC and SS, its prob those 24/7 convenience shops along geylang or mustafa. On 2nd tot, if layout is so relevant a consideration for shopping, mustafa prob would have difficult retaining customers for long (but its still doing great today ^^; ). Just my view.

Vested (small fly)
FYI, more than 80% of SS stores are 24 hours now.

Just a comment on Mustafa. Been there a few times for shopping. I think their layout is fairly ok. The SS outlet that I frequent often is more cramp than Mustafa.

Anyway, Mustafa is having it's own group of loyal customers, so I doubt it will just close shop. Smile
Just maybe to add on about layouts........although price matters too

The layout matters a lot for retailing, for example if you notice the shopping trolley in NTUC is oversize so that you will put more items into it and the widen space in between the shelves is to accommodate that

Have you also wonder why in some retail shops has employee passing you the basket, same concept, you will buy more than your hand can carry

The lights and everything is also part of the layout, take a look above next time..........specially the counter where they sell fresh produce vs the rest of the store

I haven't been to SS, so I cant evaluate......but layouts are very important

I have been a loyal SS shopper for past 10 years. I am not the typical customer tho. Am 30+ European but I like their shops. Prices used to be far lower then NTUC. I bought In Loyang intitially, then I frequented the Chinatown outlet even tho I stayed right next to Cold Storage Great world. Now I mainly go Serangoon North and AMK outlets and sometimes Bedok resevoir. Outlets used to be cramps but it I am OK, I can get my things very fast as all is nearby. The check out is always fast and aunties are very friendly. Much faster then NTUC. Recently they upgraded Serangoon north and chinatown. It is cleaner and wider now but still convenient. LED lightings should cut their electricity bill.

Needless to say I am vested for the long haulSmile

Glad to meet up fellow shareholder here.

(vested for the long haul too Big Grin)
Sheng Siong is opening a new store in Bukit Panjang, Segar area. Wondering why they did not put an announcement regarding this.

That area is great as it is currently lack of a supermarket. The nearest supermarket will be Giant at Fajar area. They will be serving many new HDB flats and even an EC.
