There are distinctive sales formats in grocery retailing, with diff customer segment, albeit overlapping.
Few of the formats are mid-end (Cold Storage, and NTUC finest), Hypermart (NTUC Xtra), and community (Sheng Siong). Sheng Siong has performed well, as a community retailer, with its unique staff structure and company strategies.
Not all stores are the same, IMO
(vested in Sheng Siong)

Is the price drop due to incoming competition from Amazon which announced its bringing its grocery business to Spore.
Take a look at this video. All supermarts are going to hv a hard time to compete in terms of efficiency.
Amazon without any line or registers

I think this tech is still in it's infancy. Good for the future, kudos to Amazon for initiating it but I believe SS will still have their own competitive advantage. I've always been sceptical when companies are using "new tech" to replace conventional way of doing things. I believe at the start companies into this new tech will lose out but in the long run gain as they learn and enhance this new tech.
Problems with new tech is there's always a hardware and software upgrade that happens every 3-5 years. Also maintaining the new tech is also like sailing into unchartered waters.
With that being said, I think the price correction on SS is more likely related to SS's capabilities to expand/increase revenue base. SS's valuation is already quite high to begin with. This small correction is due IMHO.

Back in US, we have seen how Amazon take on Walmart, fighting for market share. If Amazon has its intention to make its presence here, then it will most likely fight for market share.. SS will most likely see its earnings drop or stop growing, it is the job of the investor to think about whether it is worth paying for more than 20 times p/e for SS

I got different thinking. Amazon might not success in Spore. Pp here still prefer to shop for groceries than order online. Maybe in future when more Pp are it savvy. Amazon will win but things will change. Doesn't mean SS will not go online. Let keep our finger cross.
