Future looks pretty bright to me (taken from GPRO latest financial report:

Our strategy
We intend to expand our existing capture business and broaden our portfolio with content management, editing and sharing solutions to provide increased value to our customers, introduce new revenue streams and further differentiate us from competitors. Key components of our strategy include the following:

Continue to introduce innovative capture devices

We relentlessly pursue our goal of developing the world’s most versatile capture devices and enabling self-capture during any activity. In September 2014 we introduced our line of HERO4 capture devices and our HERO entry-level capture device. To stay at the forefront of our industry, we are focused on continued product innovation and leadership. For example, we develop our own custom lenses, custom sensors and digital signal processing technologies. Other areas of innovation include audio, battery and accessory design. We may also leverage our brand strength and product expertise to opportunistically enter new device categories.

Develop seamless content management, editing and sharing solutions

We believe it is important to simplify the organizing, editing and sharing of engaging content and, to that end, we are developing an integrated content management platform. We may consider additional acquisitions of complementary technologies or businesses in the future. In addition, we may seek to leverage our content management platform as a new revenue stream.

Scale as a media brand

GoPro programming is a potent marketing tool which we believe, on its own, has significant value as a growing media asset. We are investing to scale GoPro as a media entity and develop new revenue opportunities by increasing production of GoPro originally produced content while simultaneously increasing the aggregation and redistribution of our customers’ “best of” UGC. Additionally, we are investing to develop, distribute and promote GoPro programming on additional partner platforms such as Virgin America and Xbox Live.

Cant remember but think its been on downtrend for past few months liao? Plus as article above heavy.insider selling.
also where is the value? Vb is for value investment, not growth and highly speculative investment.

No matter how its hyped, Gopro is just a very high quality, weatherproof and rugged video cam setup for outdoor enthusiast and action film maker. Can be easily outcompeted if video equipment maker like sony, fujifilm, canon, panasonic and even apple decide to venture into this field.

Dear BlueKelah,

If you say GoPro's market position can be eroded easily by entrant of new competitors, then why didn't they already do it? I will beg to differ. GoPro is able to inspire a loyal "cult" type of followers, which is much similar to Apple in its beginning days.

When I hear Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm... the first two words are "boring, outdated". While for GoPro, "innovative, modern". I will be more worried when key management (CEO, etc) starts selling and not independent directors. Independent directors come and go. Those two independent directors could be selling their stakes to recycle their capital. Remember UMS? It was fine despite insider selling.

This is the most promising competitor with new technology, 360 degree video recording which even GoPro might have to copy and might be a GoPro killer. This is the type of cutting edge tech that can redefine a market and have loyal "cult" users converting over. The main GoPro buyer are those action type youngsters and sports people which are very fickle bunch and I am sure many will jump onboard with this new tech. This would probably pose one of the biggest risk this year to GoPro sales. I know I am getting my hands on one.

They are already doing it, competitors are already there and market share is being eroded, even Apple might be coming soon. Though GoPro is the most popular with action cam market at the moment.

Cult type followers are not much use if the company doesn't make enough profits from selling them a niche product.

talking about Apple, in 1997 it almost disappeared, despite their cult mac followers as mainstream market was ruled by Windows/Intel monopoly and company was losing money. In the end, was rescued by a $150million from Microsoft and only later the well designed iPod which was mainstream product (which ate into both RIO and Creative Zen market) and later the diversification into mobile market with touchscreen iphones (ate into Nokia and blackberry market) and now into the high -end watch market.

Probably why GoPro might make a bad "tech" investment.

Xiaomi has a GoPro clone as well, to add to the devil's advocate. I agree this market can get very competitive quickly.

(not vested, I do own a GoPro though)

The technology behind GoPro is not complex. But they managed to fit the technology to the need, much like what Apple did. Tech companies after all these decades still trying to fit needs into technology.

Apple is primarily a software company which is an open techie secret. That's the MOS / moat.

btw it was released when the stock price was $84.32. He may have closed his position and went long for all we know.

Great Article! Thanks for it. Offers me a different perspective and reminds me that GoPro has yet to show how it can execute its other strategies based on the number of followers it has on social media.

I bought at $38. If the price was $84, I would probably not touch it - but then again I am speaking from hindsight.
