There are many people I know who are running their own business, and there are many I know who are highly successful working in a large firm.
The people who are running their own business may earn less, work longer hours(those in retail, weekends are all permanently burnt) but a far happier lot. Personal opinion is that when times are good a firm can give lots of monetary rewards but when times are tough, you can be fired without a 2nd thought. Also when retirement age draws near, you can be earning 100K this year and asked to leave the following year. In running your own business, you decide your own fate.

So the benefits are clear, the start up years can be tough and most people don't even make it. But when you do make it, business can flourish and grow till you leave this world. It is a much more realistic assessment of your capability and a much more fulfilling career path. One of my friends asked me, " I want to start a business, but I do not know what to do" To that I say, " Do something you are good at, it is you who decide your business and your destiny, cant really ask anyone for advice on what to do."
