Honoring a special generation -ST Editorial

Out of limelight now, some older Singaporeans might have a sense of feeling missed out on the fruits of success, and perhaps even a disconnection with contemporary life.

Seniors have their pride, and many would not make demand as of right.

What distinguishes this group is the selfless support it gave the wider national cause when there is no guarantee that Singapore would survive, let alone succeed.

With nothing to fall back on, like national reserves or organization support systems, they made do with less, saved and invested in their children's future.

Their past contribution was simply what they saw as their duty and became a legacy to the young.

Many people don't understand that the reason we can stand taller today is because we stand on the shoulders of our forefathers.

Many even think success is theirs and theirs alone, nobody helped them to achieve. They deserve their remunerations and entitled to their lifestyles. Paying taxes is their donation to the less deserving. This is one of the big debate in US. It does shows that some people never grow out.

Yes. A lot of private properties owners can upgrade because of HDB flats from public housing policy.

A lot of us can get good jobs because of the education policy.

So dont whole day KPKB about 'papayas'. KP occasionally can already.

Its good that the gov realise that the pioneer gen has contributed a lot in the building of the beginning of the nation. I do hope when they formulate policies, take into consideration of the old age and the duty towards the citizens, who have contributed in the army or supported their familiy members. Its never too late to implement something good and correct mistakes along the way.

kinda of agree..there were quite a number of elderly who were/are uneducated/lack of opportunity in their earlier life, and they were left behind by the fast pace of our nation's development...& though they may not have contributed as much as others..irregardless of race, age, educational level, they are still our forefathers and truebreed citizens..the govt should look more to take care of them as well..
