To me, the key is to generate unbiased news. As of now, many Singaporean are no longer buying into its content. The public is no longer aware if sph reporters are hired to relay the truth or merely act on behalf of those in power.

Until sph can shake off this stigma, its public audience will shrink. This is something in my opinion, a task the current ex civil service mgmt is unable to do.

It is the 'nation building' press. It is controlled under the Newspaper and Printing Presses Act has to serve the interest of the government whether readers like it or not. Even if Sporeans buy into its content, I am not sure it will arrest the decline in readership.

As far as I know, the SPH papers do not purvey fake news. When they report something, you can be sure that the event took place. This is something to be treasured in the current environment where fake news abound.  As for opinions and views, I think every newspaper is biased to a certain extent.

Can they ever do the equivalent NYtimes reporting on 1MDB? => A new agency that is thousands of miles away from Malaysia is reporting more in detail than them.
Or detailed reporting on indonesians hoarding illegal money in Singapore??
Or the Thaksin family vs Thai Gov?

For malaysia news and opinions, I think Malaysiakini is far ahead of them. Can they beat them?? Unlikely.

Unless they just want to be the next Discovery or National Geographics, it is ok to keep winning "best website infographic award".

It may not be just about being sensitive to foreign government (yes, that is a factor and as a Singaporean I do appreciate that they do not create unnecessary tension between us and our neighbours) . It could be they simply do not have the resources. Quite often I see Bloomberg articles reproduced in ST. I guess it is more cost effective that way?

They do have very good analysis (not sure what is the industry term for it, you know those articles that appear just before the letters page....if you read the printed version). For example I enjoy reading Jonathan Eyal's analysis on ME and European politics. Nirmal Ghosh used to write from Indo China, including environmental and wild life issues which I enjoyed. They have good correspondent from China too. In fact I trust what they write about China than what the western media write. And their financial reporters (ex and present) have fans on VB too !

Newspaper tend to sell during major events when the public is hungry for news. Examples that come to mind will be the World Cup and the funeral of Mr LKY when newspapers sold out. During these occasions graphics and photos are important. SPH definitely need to work harder here. They seem to wait for these events to happen instead of actively looking for ways to create excitement. I guess they do not want to be accused of sensationalizing, but some events are purely entertainment and there is no harm creating some excitement. I just read an article in the Life section on Joanna Dong and I think they missed the boat! ST could have created a lot of more excitement in the lead up to the final of Sing China.

Not vested but subscribed to the ST (dying breed who read the printed version of the broadsheet during my daily commute).

They should take a cue from McDonalds and partner with Hello Kitty. Every issue of newspaper collect one token. After collecting 7 tokens, can use to redeem a Hello Kitty collectible at the post office or new stand. Confirm sure sell out one, even if no one reads the newspaper LOL....
Virtual currencies are worth virtually nothing.

Most of the unbiased news we can read it in advance from internet , why bother to pay to read biased outdated news ?

Not something i can completely agreed. Many of this foreign media can be completely bias too. Worst still bias against our country.
Just looks at Videos on LKY take on them in their own country on their views will know.

Many of this foreign journalists thinking can be quite shallow. They will whack you for going against social norms. I mean their social norms or lifestyle.
And they can be completely wrong in their own frog well. And they have their own agenda doing it by their backers.

Another example will be Trump. Aren't we tired on the constant barrage by their media against their own President Everyday ?!
I am not kidding. EVERYDAY. This is how dangerous Media can be running out of control. They will try to rule the country.

We are not reading from  one single press or source through internet for up-to-date news.
Is there a good reason to waste our times reading outdated news ?

It easy for us to say all these things, but if you are the editor of SPH, you will know the difficulties to report in full or to be just politically correct. Why cant SPH be like NYT, or other foreign press? What can't they just report what they like, as long as it is true? Because we are just a very very small nation, surronded by much bigger, and sometimes unfriendly neighbours. Who called as a little red dot, like an irritating pimple? Who say we behave like a rich and proud spoil kid?

We are limited by our size. SPH needs to bear this in mind and balance the needs for detailed reporting vs being politically correct. For certain matters, knowing it is good enough, no need to say it out loudly. As they said, "you know, I know, can already"

Hi Ben,
We can not stop people from calling us names.
By calling us names (aka labelling us),
it's a way for them to launch targeted attacks.

We, of course, do not need to accepts those names.
Do we?

Sharing a video "A Throne with No Name"
and hope you like it! Heart

Back to SPH.
I had done my initial purchase.
One third of budget already flush down.

I'm not concern too much about analysis etc.
I'm more concern about my ability to execute.

Let's see when (什么时候)
SPH drop to about $2.30,
whether I will pull the trigger again.

Time will tells.

Meanwhile, just remember that I buy SPH
not because of it's newspaper business,
not because of it's property business,
but it's online potentials.  Big Grin
