I sent an email to their investor relations around Oct. Immediately, the CFO, Amos called back and i was being told that the JV would be still on. Should be there by 2015(If i am not wrong) However, the project might be delayed since the IPO in 2003 (If i am not wrong) due to some land acquisition issues.

Is this for the CYG project or the $100 million project mentioned by CIMB (which they made $20 mil deposit for in 3Q 13) ? Thanks.

Hi Nick,

This is for the CYG project. Just take a look at the report that you posted previously, the asset that they are going to acquire would be an overseas project. I am not sure which project are they refer but I do remember the IR and Amos has some reservation in talking me regarding the deposit that they had made but by paying a 100 million and the earning are not that much as compared to SOA doesn't sound to be a great deal.

Hi D.L,

I highly doubt there will be a project generating 20% return on asset (assuming SOA earns $20 million) on the onset. Even SOA wasn't as high yielding initially. If the project could generate an incremental profit of > $8 million with the prospect of organic growth in the future, I think it would add value to the Company. Naturally, this is all speculation and I await further details (if the acquisition is completed). Could be game-changing if they do make a sizable acquisition IMO.

On another note, Straco closed at a new all time high of $0.605.

Let's see if they can continue to post double digit growth in 2014.

Shanghai scenic spots busy during holiday
2014-05-05 13:19 CNTV Web Editor: Li Yan

Quote:Shanghai tourism has spiked at many of the city's scenic locations during the May Day break. Popular destinations include the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower for some spectacular views of the city.

By nine o'clock in the morning, there was a long line of people outside the ticket window at the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium in Lujiazui.

The aquarium is hosting an exhibition of African aquatic creatures and visitors were treated to a special African welcome.

Many people looking for a good view of the city made a trip to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower today. Standing on the glass floor 260 meters above the ground gives many an adrenaline rush.

The tower says it was expecting around 250,000 visitors on Sunday, 25 percent more than normal. The nearby Shanghai World Financial Center was also busy. The view attracted many visitors including a Portuguese man who went there several years ago before the center was completed.

"So this time you came back and visited the building to see the view. Because in the past, it was just under construction and now you visit to see the great view of Shanghai," said the visitor Jorge Angoa.

Nearly 10,000 people had visited the Center by 7:30 this evening, three times the normal number.

Tourism in Shanghai looks strong and could get stronger when Disneyland opens next year.

Will it not be the case of New Attraction cannibalizes Old Attraction?
Or will it be complement?
In this case, it might be relevant to study the impact of USS @Sentosa to Underwater World.

Personally, I speculate that the opening of Shanghai Disneyland will increase the appeal of visiting Shanghai to domestic tourists especially in the non-peak periods. This spillover effect could boost the number of visitors in other attractions in the province. There isn't an aquarium in Disneyland to compete with SOA directly unlike SEA Aquarium in RWS vs UWS. There was precedence in FY 2010 when Shanghai Expo boosted SOA results substantially instead of cannibalizing it. Naturally, I could be wrong so we will only know the true impact in 2 years time.

The highlighted is a good point.
In my observation, UWS was doing quite well after USS opened, before SEA (no supported data, although I used to work nearby).

I did notice the synergy between SOA and Madame Tussard due to being near. Both attractions are packaged and sold which I personally think is a great idea.
I was planning to visit Madame Tussard and tempted by that (might as well).
