Let's start from your performance, what your performance?

STI still ticking for 2013, so a review after 2013 is more appropriate?

I'm quite satisfied with my results this year as I made over 30% returns on my 6 figure portfolio.

I was lucky because Challenger had a great run this year (up >40%) and its weights about 50% of my portfolio.

Some of my other gains were like Karin and Valuetronics which was mentioned with details in my blog too.

I'm currently still 90% vested and 10% in cash going into 2014.

Hope everyone is doing well too ^_^

YTD, the XIRR result is close to 30%. YTD STI return is 2.4% (assumed dividend yield of 3.4%, and growth of -1%), so it is about 27% above STI.

I am yet to complete the review. Preliminary review shows that Challenger helped quite a lot. So did M1 and YZJ. None of my portfolio lost money this year. The recent acquired MemstarT also helped a bit.

Other in this forum might have better result, with a good run up of stocks like Kingsmen, Silverlake and Boustead etc.

Looks like many here get about 30% return for 2013. As of today, my return is 30.8% inclusive of dividends. I own only small and mid caps. A number of my stocks have done well: Boustead, MTQ, Challenger, Penguin, Guthrie (general offer) and Eastern Holding.

How are u guys calculating your returns for the year? To make it comparable?

Portfolio value on 1 Jan 13 (A)
= Total market Value of all stocks owned based on last closing prices + un-invested cash in portfolio

Portfolio value today (B)
= Total market Value of all stocks owned based on last closing prices + un-invested cash in portfolio

YTD portfolio return = (B - A)/A x 100%

I did not inject new cash during the year.

There was a well-covered topic in the following thread. You can get all the detail from the posts.

One of the method used was XIRR with MS Excel

Hi CityFarmer,

Thanks for the Excel template. Can I use this template just for 2013, or should I use it over a few consecutive years?

Sorry for the noobish question. This is the first time I am using this template.

Thanks. Smile
