Hi Chia

I don't think Freedom is the most important thing in life. Ask those in Africa or Syria Smile It is an American media utopian.

It is at best the 3rd layer of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Even in a soccer match a player can't do whatever he wants.

I always tell my children: Rules and constraints are not there for the purpose to punish you; it is to ensure the happyness of the majority. With good policies 90% of people will be happy. it is delusional in all things to assume 100% will be happy or the often made argument that people will go around the rules. The rules are not made for the 10% who will find trouble. The law enforcement is made for these 10%.

When individual rights exceeds the happyness of the majority, or majority marginalizes the minorities in their pursuit for happyness, that's where problem arises. As usual it's how to find the balance and middle ground.

NB happyness purposely spelled wrongly in reference to a movie Smile Just some random Monday thoughts

I would like to look at freedom more holistically.

I could be living in a democratic society, but my mind is trapped by the worries of urban life. I am not free.
I could have gallop into the endless African woods, but i am bonded by the chains of hunger and corruption. I am not free.
I could be living the high life but i become a slave to my desires. I am not free.

if u know too much, no more freedom?!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

What is freedom? Freedom doesn't mean being free of external control, but free to decide our lives, what to do with our time, and our money.

This is what we are seeking in value investing, freedom financially, right? If we are seeking full freedom, I reckon, probably the only way is via religious practices. It is definitely not my choice.  Big Grin

I have chosen to be "slaved" by
- my family, and (true) friends
- meaningful albeit tiring job(s)

(sharing a view with a non-exhaustive list Tongue )

Never say "Never", that's what I have learnt along this way. Smile

I witnessed my dad's capitulation during AFC1997, I swore off equity investments. Now most of my net-worth/hopes are banking on it. I used to think that I am permanently casted into the mold of a salaried employee that is part of the Spore Inc Locomotive, now I learned that I need to think like a business owner if I want to bloom in my equity investments. My experiences have humbled me to realize that the future is always yet to be.
