The neighbourhood of Joo Chiat is set to become Singapore’s first all-private-property constituency in view of the upcoming demolition of four remaining HDB blocks under the Selective En-bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS), media reports said.

Its MP Charles Chong (pictured) said: “Within the next two or three years, all the four blocks will be resettled and Joo Chiat will be the only constituency where it is 100 percent private property – condos and landed property – which makes it a bit different from the other constituencies.”

Located along East Coast Road, the blocks comprise 129 housing units. The 48-year-old buildings are also home to one percent of the constituency’s population of 37,000 residents.

Because the site will be the SIGLAP MRT station. My brother stayed there.

The rationale is sound. However, the replacement flat is not as good - 500 m near Bedok MRT.

The residents proposed some replacement flat in the locality. The reply was maintain Bedok / Chai Chee flat.

Group JC into a GRC? then walkover..

This tactic used to work well when there were only few areas with high opposition support. eg. Braddel to Marina Parade GRC.

However, the surrounding GRCs are marine parade and East coast.
Both got around 55% last election.

risky move to put JC into either one but is there a choice?

SERS is a program where old flats are demolished and then redeveloping new blocks of HDB/EC flats. So guess the effect will be temporary as new residents will benefit from the newly built subsidised flats (though this will likely be felt in 2020 GE and not 2016). FYI a SERS progam can take years from the lessees moving out to demolition to the building of new flats
