SAKAE Holdings' Douglas Foo is hoping that a visit to the dentist will help him satisfy his craving for more sushi.

Sakae, which runs the Sakae Sushi chain of restaurants, announced on Tuesday that Q&M Dental is the first client for the newly set up Sakae Corporate Advisory. The appointment will last for two years. Sakae's task will include marketing Q&M to European and US investors.

That a restaurant business is moving into advisory work is unusual, to say the least, but Mr Foo said it is part of his grand plan to grow Sakae's chain of about 200 restaurants as at end-2013 to 30,000 outlets worldwide......

most likely Sakae is paid only on success. Q&M is not stupid, they have nothing to lose. this newspaper coverage is probably to create some marketing hype.

The proceeds from the suit Sakae won against Andy Ong helped put Sakae in the black this quarter. Without which, it would have been another loss...

Another local company onto the cryptocurrency bandwagon!

Embattled restaurant operator Sakae Holdings Ltd and payment gateway MC Payment announced the development of a new cryptocurrency token, Bitecoin, aimed at the food and beverage (F&B) industry. The companies signed an MOU on 8 Feb to launch what they called a “Token Generation Event”, which is essentially an ICO.

Sakae will market the coin while MC Payment will do the tech development. The companies have not yet decided on how many tokens they will issue, or how much they hope to raise from their initial offer. A white paper is still in development and it is not clear yet what the roadmap will be, although the press release said that the company will use a “digital wallet… [to] amass data, which allow merchants to gain a deeper understanding of their consumer demographics and feedback, as well as implement targeted marketing tools”.

That's really weird. The last i know - McD/Starbucks are still F&B companies. They invested in their brands to grow their F&B business, ie. brands drive business growth and the proceeds of the business growth is further invested to grow the brand - creating this virtuous circle. I cannot imagine it is the other way around where investing in new businesses (corporate advisory, fintech, blockchain) will drive the brand growth...but you probably could do it if there are more synergies or there is some sort of integration ongoing...But of course, i am not an entrepreneur like Mr Foo who may be thinking out of the box, and definitely he has more insights than me about building an business!

Sakae sheds no further light on case of sugar trade turned sour

Despite the tough questions, the hour-long AGM was civil, although one shareholder urged Mr Foo to focus on his core food business, voicing concerns that management had gotten "distracted" over the years. Mr Foo said: "I beg your pardon, if you have mistaken us for a food company. We have never gone out to say we're building a food company. We have always said we are building a global brand."

Sakae has always been on a "brand-building journey", he said: "So you realise that even when we do fintech, it's Sakae Fintech. Even when we do corporate advisory, it's Sakae Corporate Advisory. We go to blockchain, it's Sakae Blockchain. We do cybersecurity, it's Sakae Cybersecurity. It's all riding on the Sakae brand."

He added: "We are trying to build a McDonald's or a Starbucks for sushi. So we are not a F&B company."
