Keppel privatised FELS at the start of the last rig-building cycle. Just some history.

Another contract! This time worth US$265M.

Soon the world will be covered by Keppel's Rigs!

"To date, over 2,800 jacks designed by Keppel FELS’ Offshore Technology Development unit have been installed in the jackup rigs built to KFELS’ proprietary designs."

Not sustainable imo. Spore companies culture is once they identified a good researcher who produced good results, they will push them to do management work.

China shipbuilders are not the target competitors of Keppel, but the more advance Korean shipbuilder...Big Grin

No buyer yet, but Keppel will go ahead and build 1st drillship

SINGAPORE — Local firm Keppel Corporation, the world’s top offshore-drilling rig maker, said it plans to build its first drillship despite not having a buyer lined up, as it is confident the design would be welcomed by the market.

It is the first time Keppel has built a drilling unit without a contract in at least 14 years, an examination of company announcements showed.

A leading builder of jackup rigs, which work in waters as deep as 152m, the firm has yet to build a drillship from scratch and has been trying to secure a contract for its own design of such a vessel this year.

South Korea’s shipbuilding giants, such as Samsung Heavy Industries, dominate the market for drillships, which are used to explore oil and gas in waters up to 3,658m deep and cost at least US$500 million (S$627 million) per vessel to build.

Keppel into speculation directly. some of their customers also build speculatively anyway.

so assume Keppel profit margin is 20%, Keppel plonks $400m into the spec build. cannot sell, just rent cheaply to Kris Energy lor. If the specifications are suitable.
