*TO ACHIEVE ENLIGHTENMENT, ONE MUST BE CONSTANTLY RACING AGAINST TIME, REMAIN DILIGENT, STEADFAST AND NEVER SLACK OFF*

Caller: How are you Master? Nowadays, the majority of us are aware that most things in life are predetermined.

One example is when the Buddha attained enlightenment during His time, it was also at a predetermined time and moment. The same goes for the things that we pray for or do – when conditions are right, success will follow naturally. This makes some of us worry because despite having done our best in our spiritual cultivation, there remain a lot of obstacles that we need to overcome. In this context, I would like to seek Master’s advice.

Master Jun Hong Lu: You must constantly race against time. Never slack off, don’t waste your time and do your utmost so that you will succeed on this spiritual path. There is no two-ways about it.

Every minute and second that you do not squander will grant you the time needed for your spiritual cultivation and Buddhism practice. If you are still watching movies, even if it is for a few minutes, it is considered a waste of time. It’s as simple as that.

Take a look at the monastics in the temple and see how they spend their 24 hours cultivating. If you continue to remain the way you are, do you think it is even possible for you to become a Bodhisattva? Even the monastics may not have such attainment, let alone you.

*WE CAN PUT FORTH A PRAYER REQUEST TARGETING AT OUR ILL HEALTH WHEN RECITING THE EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE ON THE EVE AND FIRST DAY OF LUNAR NEW YEAR*

Caller: Hi Master, is it alright to put forth a targeted prayer request to repent of sicknesses we are suffering from given that we can recite up to 87 times of the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance on the eve and first day of Lunar New Year? To prevent the activation of karmic obstacles, we will pair our recitation with either 21 or 49 Little Houses.

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s perfectly fine.

Buddhism enables us to gain the true value of life in the world.
The wise are able to let go, take things easy, have a positive frame of mind and live their lives with ease.
If we can reach a thorough understanding of reality, we can succeed in what we do. As a result, our minds will be calm and relaxed.

*AVOID DOING LAUNDRY ON THE FIRST DAY OF LUNAR NEW YEAR*

Caller: In the morning of the first day of Lunar New Year, a Buddhist friend stained his trousers, and he conveniently washed it without giving it much thought. Subsequently, he had a dream and in the dream, the shop owner substituted his wallet for another. Does this have anything to do with the fact that he washed his trousers that day?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course it has.

Caller: Does it mean that we should not do laundry in the morning of the first day of Lunar New Year as it may cause financial misfortune?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Precisely! Doing so spells trouble because it is a sign of washing away his fortune for the rest of his life.

Caller: Does it mean it has been actualised in the dream?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It means financial misfortune will befall him. Washing trousers on the first day of Lunar New Year can bring about financial misfortune. Avoid doing so.

Caller: Alright. So, we should not do laundry and take a bath.

Master Jun Hong Lu: I never said you cannot take a bath.

*TIPS ON IMPROVING WEALTH LUCK AND ELIMINATING NEGATIVE KARMA*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Do you know of another way to improve wealth luck? When the incense burner is not in use, take it down from the Buddhist altar and wipe it. If you are an investor, wiping the incense burner will help to increase your fortune. In fact, this is a common practice in many dharma doors.

Performing the act of washing is also a good way to eliminate negative karma. Hence, you can throw yourself into washing whenever you feel unhappy as this will improve your mood. You may notice many people will start washing in the kitchen whenever they are upset. They will feel much better after a while, because this is one of the ways to give vent to their negative emotions.

*THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LANTERN FESTIVAL*

The Lantern Festival (also known as the ‘Yuanxiao Festival’) is an important festival celebrated by the Chinese community on the 15th day of the first lunar month to mark the final day of Lunar New Year celebrations.

Besides signifying the first full moon of the year, small glutinous rice balls are eaten on this special occasion to celebrate the harmony and reunion of family and friends.

Most importantly, on this special day, countless Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and officials from the spiritual worlds would visit the human realm - the extraordinary scenes are beautifully depicted in one of the discourses in the pack.

Those who are true to their Buddhist practice will stand to receive blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on this day. Hence, Master Lu advises us to focus on reciting more Buddhist scriptures and offering _Little Houses_ on the Lantern Festival.

For more details, please refer to the pack. Last but not least, we wish you a great start to the Year of the Rabbit.

*EXTRAORDINARY SCENES OF HEAVEN ON THE LANTERN FESTIVAL*

*Question:*
The depiction below is the extraordinary scenes that unfolded right before my very eyes on the Lantern Festival on 8 February 2020:

On the eve of the Lantern Festival, innumerable Heavenly Dharma Protectors were guarding the paths that led to a myriad of Buddhist altars of various sizes in the Saha World (娑婆国土).

Starting from the 23rd day of the final lunar month of the year till the Lantern Festival, from time to time, Dharma Protectors and Bodhisattvas will observe the Saha World from heaven. They are particularly concerned about this year (2020), as a spate of natural and man-made disasters are just about to break out, inflicting untold suffering to all corners of the human realm.

In the midst of my recitation of the _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_, my soul became light and was escorted by Dharma Protectors to heaven. I saw Guan Yin Bodhisattva placing Her vase mid-air, where it kept revolving rapidly and radiating blinding rays of light.

The glaze water (净瓶水) in the vase contained the immense positive energy emanating golden rays of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, comprising
Guan Yin Bodhisattva (观世音菩萨),
Nanjing Bodhisattva (南京菩萨),
all Tai Sui Bodhisattvas (太岁菩萨),
Guan Di Bodhisattva (关帝菩萨),
Victorious In Battle Buddha (斗战胜佛),
Shakyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛),
Amitabha Buddha (阿弥陀佛),
Great Strength Bodhisattva (大势至菩萨),
Mahavairocana Buddha (大日如来),
Ma Zu Bodhisattva (妈祖菩萨),
Cundi Bodhisattva (准提菩萨),
the Four Dragon Kings of the Seas (四海龙王),
Jigong Living Buddha (济公活佛),
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (普贤菩萨),
Manjushri Bodhisattva (文殊菩萨),
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (地藏王菩萨),
the Goddess of Mount Tai (also known as Bixia Yuanjun, 泰山圣母碧霞元君),
Wei Tuo Bodhisattva (韦陀菩萨), and
many other Bodhisattvas I was unfamiliar with.

Not long after, the vase gradually tilted, with the glaze water sprinkling in the sky above the Saha World. This was followed by successive rounds of golden drizzle slowly drifting down to earth at a time when the sky was emitting supreme rays of light. Taking on a designated path, the energy of most of these lights penetrated into the statues of Bodhisattva and the yellow landscape pictures of Guan Yin Citta Practice Centres and homes of Buddhist practitioners.

The homes of Buddhist practitioners, who perform recitations or pay their respects to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, including those who practise other dharma doors, were engulfed by these golden rays and energy meant to keep them safe and sound throughout the year, shielding them from the onslaught of evil energy.

*Answer:* This is how I pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva:

_“May Guan Yin Bodhisattva bless and protect us, the disciples of Guan Yin Citta, from calamities. May the homes of all disciples of Guan Yin Citta be immersed in the supreme light of Guan Yin Bodhisattva”._

With such a prayer, wouldn’t the supreme lights of Buddhas shine on every household?

Deepest Gratitude to Namo Shakyamuni Buddha!

Deepest Gratitude to the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva!

Deepest Gratitude to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Dharma Protectors!

Deepest Gratitude to Master Jun Hong Lu!

It’s been almost seven years since I started practising Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. My daughter played a critical role in ‘thrusting’ me into the gate of dharma. I must count my blessings for having chanced upon Guan Yin Citta at the depth of my desperation. Without Guan Yin Citta, I would not have been able to extricate myself from the emotional roller-coasters, having to deal with a once-healthy daughter who, for some unbeknownst reason, suddenly developed mental health disorders, which medical specialists linked them to autism and depression.

This turn of events took place in 2015 when my daughter was in Secondary 3. She became socially withdrawn and avoided contact with her family members and close friends, and just wanted to be by herself most of the time. Out of no choice, she quit school soon after.

Sensing that something was amiss and with the encouragement of a Buddhist friend, I started to perform daily recitation for myself and my daughter. Despite my hectic work and family life, I would always squeeze out time to recite Little Houses.

Notwithstanding the absence of any concrete signs of a turnaround in the initial three years of my practice, I kept my faith, not letting the weariness of life get the better of me. I constantly reminded myself that I must persevere and stay steadfast in my Buddhism practice especially in times of tribulation. As the Chinese saying goes, “It takes more than one cold day for the river to freeze three feet deep (冰冻三尺非一日之寒)”.

To expedite my progress, I whole-heartedly embraced the Five Golden Buddhist Practices of performing recitation and life liberation, making great vows (I became a vegetarian for life in February 2016), studying Buddhism in Plain Terms and performing repentance. The opportunity to work from home following the pandemic outbreak in early 2020 gave me greater latitude to recite more Little Houses.

Till these days, without fail, I still perform daily recitation of the following Buddhist scriptures on my daughter’s behalf:

11 times of the Great Compassion Mantra,

21 times of the Heart Sutra, and

1 time of the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance.

Some two years ago, my daughter’s mental health improvement became more apparent. She became less temperamental and had less self-doubt. She started to open up and share light-hearted moments at home – something that may seem undeserving of any special attention to most parents, but it means the whole world to a mother like me, having worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set the wheel of transformation in motion. In those quiet moments of mine, many a time, I will still shed tears of gratitude – I am deeply grateful to Guan Yin Bodhisattva and Master Lu for being a beacon of light in the Saha World.

Sometime in June this year, my daughter gave me a heart-warming, yet memorable surprise, by sharing with me her aspiration of upgrading her skill set and wishes to enrol into a private school. Needless to say, this must have been the large number of Little Houses (circa more than 1,000) and captive lives that I have offered on her behalf. This goes to show that when the number of Little Houses offered has reached a tipping point, changes will be afoot. This speaks volumes about the importance of staying the course even as our initial efforts seem to have hardly moved a needle. I am pleased to say that my daughter has since started her studies in July and she seems happy about it.

Unlike the majority of parents with autistic children, I opted for an unorthodox approach to helping my daughter bounce back from her mental illness by anchoring my faith in Guan Yin Bodhisattva. The journey to a full recovery may still be some time away, but with unwavering faith in Guan Yin Bodhisattva, I strongly believe my daughter is inching closer to full recovery in every stride that I take.

Personally, I have also benefited from my Buddhism practice. I find greater peace in life. Physically, the frequent headache and persistent pain that I have had in my arms have largely been cured. I am now able to lift my arms with much ease.

Before I end my testimony, I would like to leave this catch-phrase from our revered Master Lu as food for thought:

“Recognising life is impermanent, we must consider the ultimate consequences of all our actions. Because every seed we sow is the fruit we reap. Therefore, it is important to understand the law of causation. Being ignorant of causation will surely land you in trouble.”

If my sharing is improper in any way, I would like to seek forgiveness from Namo Shakyamuni Buddha, the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharma Protectors and Master Jun Hong Lu.

Thank you!
