Last night I was at the lift lobby, waiting for the lift. A lady with blonde hair approached, arms full with stuff. I opened the lift lobby door for her. As she entered she turned her head to converse with a Chinese man outside, in Teochew. I did a double take and discreetly scrutinised her face to see if she is an Ah Lian who dyed her hair blonde. Nope - looks like a pale white faced angmo lady.

"Thanks for being my hands", she smiled at me, speaking with an accent that sounds British.

"You're welcome", I replied and in my astonishment asked, "How did you learn Teochew?"

"From my husband's family", she said, "only the crucial words like 'ar buay' and 'chin kan kor'.

She was being modest as I had earlier heard her speak more than a smattering of Teochew with the man, with tones in the right places.

I smilingly noted to myself 2 rarities:
1) Angmo lady married to Chinese male - usually the pairing is the reverse, caucasian male with SPG.
2) FT lady locally integrated to the extent can converse in local dialect - an ability even local youngsters are losing.
