There is an article in ST today, on a new popular phone in China i.e. Xiaomi (小米手机)

A google search reveals the popularity of the phone in China. It serves as another competitor in China for Apple for its China venture.

Anyone uses the phone? It is not sold in Singapore, probably due to only Chinese version available.

CNET review on Xiaomi MI2 below

Samsung is overtaking Apple in all aspects, unless Apple can come up with another revolutionary product soon.
I think the mass consumers, you and me, can all sense this.

How many people are still excited by Iphone 5? How about a Galaxy Note 2 instead?
Or Ipad with new retina display? Launched after the "new" Ipad 8 months back? Samsung Tab 10.1 makes me want to go and touch it.

To me, Ipad mini launch actually signifies Apple doing the "catch up" with competitors on the 7 inch platforms arena rather than being the market leader that it has enjoyed for so long.

On a pure valuation basis P/E, I would think Apple is still alright. But shouldn't buying companies be forward-looking into its potential to grow, thus potential to increase earnings? Unless one is looking at a dividend play company.
So either Apple evolve into a dividend play company using its tremendous cash hoard or it remakes itself into another blitzkreig approach with fantastic products again.

But for a consumer cum tech giant like Apple, being a dividend play actually means that the investors approach towards its share price would be different.

Chances of latter? I don't know. Maybe Steve Jobs 2 might be a cleaner in Apple Inc now going to be future CEO someday.

iPhone loyalty has declined for the first time, a study has found. Three quarters of Western Europe's iPhone owners are likely to buy another Apple smartphone, down from 88 per cent last year. Approximately 88 per cent of American owners are likely to buy another, down from 93 per cent, according to the study, as reported in the Daily Telegraph.

A similar study by GfK last year found that 60 per cent of consumers who use smartphones running Google's Android said they would stick with phones using the same software. Only 48 per cent of people using Research In Motion's devices said they would stay loyal to their Blackberry phones, the study showed.

So iPhone loyalty still the highest among them, even after the decline.

Samsung has hiked the price of processors used in Apple's iDevices by 20 per cent and the fruity firm has had to suck it up, Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo said.

A source told the paper that Samsung said it wanted more moolah for its application processors and Apple has had to accept this because no one else can fulfil the contract, the WSJ has reported.

Despite Apple's attempts to diversify away from its ever more bitterly hated rival, shifting RAM and flash storage to its other suppliers, no other chip firm can churn out Apple's processors like Samsung, forcing Cupertino to accept the price hike.

Apple and Samsung have been locked in what increasingly looks like a patent deathmatch as the Korean firm's Galaxy range competes for top spot with Apple's iPhones and, to a lesser extent, fondleslabs.

Samsung lost one battle in the war in the US, when a jury decided that Sammy was infringing on fruity IP and awarded Apple just over $1bn. But Samsung has been trying to get that verdict overturned on claims of jury misconduct.

In the meantime, Apple has been the one losing out in the UK, forced to post a statement in newspapers and on its website stating that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not copy its iPad.

The tech infighting is hottest between Apple and Samsung, although the fruitchomp firm has taken other Android manufacturers to court too. Google-owned Motorola has a number of cases with Apple and HTC once did too, although just this weekend the Taiwanese firm reached a settlement. HTC agreed to a 10-year licence agreement, the terms of which are confidential. ®

"Apple, the largest United States stock by market value, was headed toward its eighth straight week of declines on Friday, as the rush to secure profits before a potential hike in capital gains taxes next year has investors dumping the market favorite.

Since hitting a record high of US$705.07 a share in September, Apple has lost about a quarter of its value. The stock's descent has vastly outpaced those of the S&P 500, which is down just under 7 per cent in the same time frame." - TODAYonline

Upcoming innovation from Samsung, a rival of Apple. Will the new mobile further threatening Apple market share and P&L

"Samsung will soon begin mass production of phones with displays using plastic rather than glass, a move that will make mobile devices unbreakable and bendable

The company is sampling the displays with "a few customers", reports the Wall Street Journal, and is "in the last phase of development" for the devices, which are expected to be released in the first half of next year, according to its source.

Using a plastic polymer instead of glass, Samsung has produced displays that can roll and bend, and survive falls and blows from the clumsiest of customers, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Samsung is seeking to differentiate itself from other mobile brands in an increasingly cutthroat marketplace, and flexible displays could boost their profile by offering a unique product. " - TODAYonline

There are things which i still prefer metal over plastic or glass over plastic. Would someone prefer to buy a watch with scratched proof plastic face or scratched proof glass? I still prefer those olden metal made Transformers. Nowadays these Transformers toys are plastic made and it just feel cheap (though the price is very expensive).

Many of the metal parts you see today maybe just coated look alike metal. Depending on the coating process, the feel factor varies. An alternative material if do it right is those rubbery parts when properly made will gives leathery feeling. I like them.

Yes there is connotation of Metal = Quality.
