Is there a silver lining investing in Silver Coins?

so much has been mentioned about the fiat currency........as a layman, i cannot imagine what it is like. will we be back to barter trade ?
if fiat currency won't happen, then all these buying real money - is it a myth cook up by some smart guys to spin a investment story for people to get in ?
