I think there was an indepth analysis thread for preference shares in afralug.
Some mechanisms of preference shares:
1) They pay fixed dividend rate but the company can choose not to pay the dividend if it decides to stop the dividend payment of the ordinary shares.
2) The Preference Shares are perpetual securities with no maturity date,
and are not redeemable at the option of the Holders.
3) It is probably good for some kopi money.
