Truth story, recently my property agent friend told me that he just managed to close a deal in Iskandar project. An ang mo expatriate who work in Woodland chose to buy a land property in JB and every morning travel to SG to work....see ang mo also know how to maximize the low cost of living across the border.. me too looking at these 3 places once i stop working, Malaysia, Thailand and Vn...hehe.

Indeed very proud... Most expensive city = highest living standards. Yet, peoples in Singapore can still choose if they want to live on the highest living standards or the HDB standards. For HDB standards, you can still buy a 2 dollar chicken rice, 10 dollar T-shirt and 2 dollar stuff from Daiso. I am happy enough because I am working in the most expensive city (commensurate with higher pay) but living in the HDB standards. But for people in Switzerland, France etc, either you cook or you eat from restaurant, no HDB standards down there.
seems difficult to retire in SG, the cost is just so high
I personally feel the rising costs started piling in from 2006 onwards and gaining in velocity in the last 5 years.
if u r the pioneer batch, maybe still can retire comfortably in sg because now govt recognize only pioneer batch & flat/house then in the 70s were cheap cheap, but alas how many of the pioneer batch is still around?
the article was kind enough to say we are number one in term of expensivity. in the crude term it means, the salary u earn now can buy peanuts la..haha
The news says the EIU is based on what a typical expat will spend in Singapore and excludes public housing and public transport.
Singapore is fast becoming the Monte Carlo of Asia.

I hope you were just being sarcastic because the
cost of living has absolutely nothing to do with the
standard of living. In fact high costs usually result in a lower standard of living because the same amount of money (PPP adjusted) buy you less stuff. Equating cost to standard is like saying a 1m HDB flat in Singapore is better than a 900k mansion with a swimming pool in Florida.
