BEIJING, Mar. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, the 2017 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC17) announced 20 teams for their on-site final competition, including teams from Tsinghua University, Saint Petersburg State University in Russia, University of Miskolc in Hungary and Hong Kong Baptist University. The competition will take place at China's National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China on April 24~28, and those finalists will challenge Sunway TaihuLight, the world's fastest supercomputer, as well as cutting-edge artificial intelligence applications.

The 20 finalist teams stood out from a total of 230 teams from around the world after two months of intense competition in the preliminary round. Besides well-established strong teams such as Sun Yat-sen University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, there are seven other teams that made it into the final round for the first time, including teams from University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, University of Warsaw in Poland and Ocean University of China. This shows that young supercomputing talents from around the world are making giant strides forward in terms of both qualification and ability.

The finalist teams will be assigned to design and build a cluster under 3000W using Inspur supercomputing nodes provided by the organizing committee to run a series of supercomputing applications, including AI-based PaddlePaddle traffic prediction, third-generation genomic sequencing and assembly of Falcon, large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS), HPL (High Performance Linpack) benchmark test and HPCG (high performance conjugate gradient) benchmark test. The task selected for the "e Prize" is to run MASNUM, an application which was nominated for the Gordon Bell Prize, on Sunway TaihuLight.

The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge, initiated by the Asia Supercomputer Community in 2012, serves to inspire the next generation of HPC scientists and engineers to deliver innovative solutions. The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge has quickly become the world's largest supercomputing hackathon. Keeping up with the most cutting-edge technologies, ASC has attracted a growing number of young talents to learn about supercomputing and make contributions to the HPC community.
