Lets hope that the final price will be much higher than A$2 billion. A$ keeps depreciating and is fast approaching 1.15 now.

NEW DELHI – Bharti Airtel, which is nearly a third owned by Southeast Asia’s top phone carrier SingTel, has raised its stake to 51 per cent in a wireless broadband venture founded by Qualcomm, the Indian company said on Thursday.

Bharti Airtel, which last year agreed to buy a 49 per cent stake in Qualcomm’s India 4G broadband venture, did not say how much it paid for the additional 2 per cent stake.

Good news for Starhub?

I don't see how the news is positive for Starhub unless I am interpreting this wrongly. Wouldn't Starhub cable viewers who want to watch EPL now face an even greater impetus to switch over to Mio and enjoy the 'more value' $64.90 package instead of the standalone $59.90 single channel deal ?

(Not Vested in telcos)
I like this sentence in the announcement. Big Grin

"The BPL stand-alone subscription will also be offered on both mio TV and the alternative pay-TV platform at $59.90 per month. The cross-carriage ruling requires the BPL stand- alone subscription price to be the same, regardless of the platform.

The price for BPL stand-alone subscription reflects the cost of providing the matches as a stand-alone service."

So will Starhub be "pleased"? Big Grin

And also, just found out from a previous post, "On Wednesday, SingTel also pointed out that its sports offering of $34.90 a month, which includes BPL, was priced cheaper than StarHub's offering in 2009."

Will Singtel's current subscribers be unhappy?
Ok guys, I am a bit confused by all these pricing tactics.

Please tell me if my understanding is correct or wrong.

- Singtel users who subscribe to only BPL, will pay $59.90
- Singtel users who subscribe to the Gold Packs (BPL + other channels), will pay $64.90
- Starhub users who subscribe to only BPL, will pay $59.90

My question is, does Starhub get to keep the entire $59.90? I doubt so.
I am guessing that Starhub needs to pay some kind of fees to Singtel?
And if that's the case, is it cheaper or more expensive than actually directly bidding for the rights?

I don't think Starhub get to keep anything. However, I do not know if there is a cost to Singtel to provide the service to Starhub's users.
It will be fun to see if starhub follow suit and charges a high price for popular stand alone channels that it has and singtel does not have. And then, charge a fair price to starhub subscriber for a bundled package subscription which has access to all starhub channels.
