SingNet's application to hold back EPL cross-carriage rejected

SingNet's application to hold back steps to cross-carry Barclays Premier League matches on rival StarHub's set-top boxes has been rejected, reported ChannelnewsAsia.

This means SingNet now has to go ahead with preparations to make the matches available on StarHub's set-top boxes while waiting for the outcome of a larger appeal against cross-carriage directions set by authorities.

for investors in Singtel, I always wonder whether they are looking at telecoms abroad as well.

in my opinion, Vodafone is cheaper than Singtel and have a broader market presence. Now that Verizon Wireless becomes a cash cow for both Verizon Communication and Vodafone, there could be some M&A opportunities. There are a lot of speculations about Verizon Communication buying out Vodafone for more than US$100b.

dividends wise, Vodafone has a yield of 5%, I believe there is no withholding tax from UK government.
Just to confirm what Freedom has said, there is indeed no withholding tax on UK Stocks when purchased by Singaporeans.

I have held my BP Plc shares for quite a few years now and have yet to be hit by withholding tax.

I am in SingTel. I didn't look beyond Asia region at the moment. May be in the near future, when local opportunities run-out...
SingTel consortium presentation slides for Myanmar telco license bid. At a glance, quite impressive...

Australian satellite communications company NewSat has flagged its interest in SingTelā€™s A$2 billion ($2.4 billion) sale of its Australian unit, Optus Satellite, said The Australian newspaper.

Not sue why Singtel is selling Optus Satellite, probably to raise cash for investment in Myanmar? It is moving money from slow growth to higher growth market.

However, with the depreciating A$, it is getting less for its sales now, if the sales is successful.

The last exchange rate used was 1 A$ = S$1.22, the latest rate min ago is 1 A$ = s$ 1.18. IMO, the drop is not much for a serious concern.

Depending on how long it takes to conclude the deal, the FX impact may be a concern. If A$ drops to 1 A$ = S$1.15 as many analysts have predicted, it is a 5.7% depreciation compared to 1 A$ = S$1.22. 5.7% X A$2 billion = $114.7M, that is a lot of money IMO.
