SINGAPORE: Responding to a question in Parliament by Member of Parliament for the Tampines Group Representation Constituency Irene Ng, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal shared that cycling path networks in Tampines, Sembawang, Pasir Ris and Yishun have been completed, and grids for a further 11 towns are expected to be completed within the next five years. Signature EC and The Brownstone EC(executive condo) residents will be able to enjoy the cycling path networks.
The National Cycling Plan remains on track, according to Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim.
The scheme aims to provide a comprehensive cycling path network in every town by the Housing and Development Board that will be integrated with Park Connector Networks to form an island-wide, off-road cycling path network spanning more than 700 kilometres.
He added: "Where we can, we are linking up existing cycling path networks to connect to the city. These include linking Alexandra Canal Linear Park and Ulu Pandan Park Connector in the west, and linking Geylang Park Connector to a future Park Connector along Sims Avenue in the east."
With regard to road safety, Mr Faishal said that it is a shared responsibility by all road users. Mr Faishal chairs the Active Mobility Advisory Panel, which plans to propose a set of rules and norms to boost safety on footpaths and cycling paths in Singapore by the second quarter of 2016.
He also shared that the Singapore Road Safety Council and the Land Transport Authority will jointly develop the national voluntary cyclist education programme based on the revised rules and norms. The programme should be ready next year.
