Weekend Comment Oct 25: Boustead's hidden value

IT IS DIFFICULTto find a Singapore-based company with a history as long as Boustead Singapore, which can trace its roots back to the year 1828. But despite its pedigree, the company is not exactly on the radar of most investors.

Analysts from AmFraser Securities agree the company has often been overlooked. That's because Boustead’s four major businesses seem to be unrelated. But it is also the reason why the company has been able to ride out different business cycles and grow.

“We believe the complexity of Boustead’s business model is likely to have been underappreciated by investors. With growth coming from four different divisions investors may have found it difficult to identify the specific growth drivers or draw synergistic relationships between the divisions,” write AmFraser analysts Eileen Goh and Royston Tan. “Yet, in our opinion, what makes Boustead unique is the diversity that it offers, and this quality is perhaps best appreciated during times of uncertainty.”

In an Oct 22 note, Goh and Tan initiated coverage of the stock with a “buy” call and a target price of $1.95. They join Philip Securities’ Joshua Tan, who on Sept 20 made a call of $1.94. On Friday, Oct 25, Boustead shares closed 0.5 cents higher at $1.435, up more than 43% over the past year.

Boustead’s four major businesses are in real-estate solutions, energy-related engineering, water and wastewater engineering and geospatial technology. In FY13, they contributed 49%; 24%; 5% and 22% respectively to revenue.

Good news - new DBL but dunno which project co (BP-EA or BP-TN) is linked and no mention of end client:

No free lunch in Iskandar and rightly so as Tat Hong needs to be rewarded for its good timing and vision:

Good news... BP-EA after BP-TN was announced few days ago. That leaves BP-SCC as the lone project co outstanding... very protracted and hopefully will be a fruitful outcome in time to come:

Not that it would change anything, but I believe the end client is Tognum Asia Pte Ltd.
Boustead?

URA signs MOU with Esri to harness world’s most advanced 3D smart city technology for urban planning
Published Date: 15 Nov 2013

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and mapping technology giant Esri have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see Singapore bring its urban planning and design processes to new heights with the world’s most advanced 3D smart city technology.

Under the MOU, Esri technology developers in the United States will commit to investing in 3D Geographic Information System (GIS) technology development in collaboration with the URA; and Esri Singapore specialists will provide the agency with local support, advice and expertise.

Esri Founder and President Jack Dangermond, Esri Singapore Managing Director Leslie Wong and URA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Tan Siong Leng signed the two-year MOU at the Esri Asia Pacific User Conference in Singapore yesterday.

Managing Director of Esri Singapore, Mr Leslie Wong said: “As one of the world’s fastest growing cities, Singapore uses GIS technology to ensure its ongoing development can meet the needs of its citizens into the future. URA has been instrumental in the development path of 3D GIS technology, advising Esri on the capabilities it requires for its constantly evolving urban development initiatives. We believe through this renewed partnership, the use of 3D GIS technology for urban planning and design simulation will be taken to new heights.”

Through the use of Esri’s advanced 3D smart city technology, Singapore’s urban planners will be able to perform urban design simulations and visualise different scenarios efficiently. For instance, planners are better able to simulate how different building forms affect the surrounding environment and safeguard view corridors to lush greenery. They can also conduct shadow studies on proposed developments to see how public spaces can be shaded for better comfort.

URA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tan Siong Leng said: “GIS technology has enabled our city planners to continue building a world-class city in a cohesive manner. Our continued collaboration with Esri and Esri Singapore will enable URA planners to design, build and develop with greater insight and take greater care of the smaller details to enhance our living environment. With Esri’s 3D GIS technology, URA can produce ‘real life’ visualisations of how our city will look before and after urban development.”

URA, Esri, and Esri Singapore have been strategic partners for more than three years, leveraging on GIS technology to deliver GIS applications such as URA maps and the Master Plan 2008. The two-year MOU will see the URA embark on several new spatial projects, and establish a ‘3D Urban Simulation Prototype Lab’ for 3D GIS testing and modelling.

Boustead has been quietly scaling new records this week. Apart from AM-Fraser's fair value target of above S$1.90, wondering if any buddies have any fresh insights on the drivers of the strong share price?

Only potential DBL left unannounced is BP-SCC. I personally suspect is the protracted YCH's Supply Chain City. If materialise will definitely lift Boustead's REIT potential...
