Death toll spikes: China's Hubei province announced 242 new deaths from the novel coronavirus Thursday morning, twice as many as on the previous day. New infections there jumped by more than 14,000.

Global epidemic: The virus has killed more than 1,350 people and infected over 60,000 people worldwide. The vast majority of cases are in mainland China.
Widened definition: The spike in numbers is partly down to a broader definition of what constitutes a confirmed case, to include people diagnosed on the basis of their symptoms rather than testing positive.

Cruise crisis: A total of 44 more cases have been confirmed on a cruise ship quarantined in Japan -- that's now 219 in total on board. A second cruise ship stranded at sea with over 2,000 people on board has been given permission to dock in Cambodia.
The cruise ship holding passengers on board in quarantine under jurisdiction of Japan Authorities seems to be an incubator for infection of the virus. The result is 219 detained on board are infected.
If those infected are passengers who are confined in cabins without windows , then the virus must be spreading via the air ventilation system .

can spread through the sanitary systems and water system. it is a closed system. Cross-contamination also dont know.

Separately, I noticed there are a number of online websites mentioning about Benjamin Graham writing about  “the interval required for a substantial undervaluation to correct itself averages approximately 1.5 to 2.5 years". While I do not have empirical/theoretical knowledge on CFA related subjects, i think based on this  approach, if we were to spread out and buy a number of undervalued companies during each pocket of opportunity(e.g. an economic downturn) and wait, it cld be a profitable way of investing albeit we may not be able to find gd multi-baggers(5x or more).

I believe this is an erroneous and dangerous assumption to make when investing. I don't think there is a time limit for a so-called 'undervaluation to correct itself.' If the idea is being tested, one will find many instances where this is not true.

Undervaluation become 'correct valuation' only when the necessary conditions present themselves.

For example, I can say that, on average, it takes 3 months of courtship for you to go from single to bf/gf. But what matters is not the time, but what happens (or did not happen) during the courtship. Your dream lover doesn't just fall into your lap after a certain amount of time has elapsed, if you didn't make the right moves.

So the number of years cited by people for 'undervaluation to correct itself' is more likely a reflection of their hopes and expectations, rather than reality.

p.s. apologies for off-topic.

Guys the main spread is the buffet table lah by surface spread since the infected have no symptoms initially and walking about.. U know the infected just touch the whole row of big scoops then the rest of the people(who have already washed their hands) will touch the same row of scoops to fill their plates and then rub their noses/face. Then the kitchen crew will touch these scoops when mealtime is over and touch their nose/face after. Its only been 1 or 2 weeks since they quarantine the vessel, so cases will keep showing up from that time before quarantine. And many infected will share room with family. So u get more cases in next 1-2 weeks even if they unload the ship now and quarantine on land.

More cases: The novel coronavirus has now infected more than 67,000 people globally, the vast majority in mainland China. The death toll is over 1,520, including four people outside mainland China.

Another 67 people onboard the Diamond Princess have tested positive for novel coronavirus, Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said on Saturday -- bringing the number of cases from the ship to 286.

More than 3,600 people, including 428 Americans, have been stuck on the cruise ship, which became a floating quarantine zone after dozens of people tested positive for the coronavirus.

Disembarking: Passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship will be disembarked over several days beginning February 21, said the president for the cruise operator.

Crew on board will likely begin their own quarantine once all passengers have left the ship, said Princess Cruises President Jan Swartz in a letter read to passengers by the ship’s captain.

Testing Delays :

Delay on testing: According to Swartz, the Japanese government said they may start a new testing process starting February 18 -- which may push back the disembarkment. The quarantine originally was set to lift on February 19.

“We understand there is a limit to the number of tests the Japanese government can complete each day, so testing all of our remaining guests could take a few days to complete," Swartz said. Because each test takes several days to process results, the first guests would not disembark until February 21.
Virus transmission through pipes ?

Two residents living on different floors of a high-rise tower called Hong Mei House, in northwestern Hong Kong's Tsing Yi, had been infected with coronavirus, health officials said.
A 62-year-old woman was diagnosed with the virus about a week-and-a-half after a 75-year-old man in the same building became infected.

Three more cases have since been linked to Hong Mei House. The woman's son, his wife and her father have been diagnosed with the virus. The mother, son and wife share an apartment.

In Hong Mei House, the two initial patients with coronavirus lived 10 floors apart, but were on the same vertical block of apartments -- number seven. Health authorities evacuated residents living in apartments numbered seven on all 30 floors of the building because their toilet discharge pipes were linked.
The possibility of the virus being transmitted through pipes immediately drew comparisons to the 2003 SARS outbreak, when this method became a major source of transmission. At the Amoy Gardens housing estate, there were more than 300 infections and 42 deaths after defective plumbing allowed the virus to spread through the building.

An investigation was launched Tuesday, but officials were quick to defend the building's sewage system as safe. Instead, Hong Kong housing minister Frank Chan said at a press conference that an initial investigation potentially pointed to a bathroom pipe of the second patient that could have been altered.
"A preliminary investigation revealed that the 307-room unit in which the second patient lived may have done self-refitting exhaust pipes," he said.
The Hong Kong government also posted a photo on social media showing that a pipe in the apartment's bathroom had been altered.

But could this have led to a possible spread of the virus?

Unless all of them in the same stack never leave their homes, the transmission can be through common areas or just coincidental.

Suspicion, fear and anxiety will make the mind think of all kind of linkages. Like in stock market investing...hahaha
