Dr M: Full Khazanah ownership will not revive MAS
He says carrier would be subject to even less scrutiny once delisted

Dr Mahathir: Govt spending doesn't show careful financial mgt
FORMER Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad yesterday criticised the takeover of Malaysia Airlines by Khazanah Nasional, the country's sovereign wealth fund, saying full ownership of the beleaguered carrier was not likely to make a difference.
Last Friday, the state investment agency made an offer to take the airline private by paying 27 sen apiece or some RM1.4 billion (S$547 million) to buy the remaining shares it does not own.
In the coming fortnight, it is expected to detail its proposed complete revamp of the airline.
Ahead of the planned overhaul, Dr Mahathir said he foresaw the same problems that have plagued MAS befalling the new incarnation. "We are going to see a lot of new people who will receive huge salaries, allowances and bonuses and not much else. That I believe is how Khazanah operates," he posted in his blog.
Malaysia Airlines steward accused of assaulting nervous Aussie passenger
AFP AUGUST 15, 2014 9:21AM

A MALAYSIA Airlines cabin crew member has been detained in France over allegations that he sexually assaulted an Australian passenger who was scared of flying with the disaster-prone airline.

The airline said in a statement that French police had detained a crew member for questioning following allegations by a passenger of “inappropriate sexual behaviour” on flight MH20 from Kuala Lumpur on August 4.

The Australian passenger complained to authorities about the incident after touchdown at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, saying she had told crew at the beginning of the flight about her apprehension of flying with the airline.

The chief steward of the Paris-bound flight sat beside her and sexually assaulted her under the pretext of “comforting” her, she said, according to a source close to the French probe.

Malaysia Airlines vowed to assist French authorities in their investigation, adding “the safety, comfort and wellbeing of our passengers is always our highest priority”.

“Malaysia Airlines expects and accepts nothing short of the highest standards of conduct from its crew and takes any such allegations very seriously,” it said.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared mysteriously in March with 239 people aboard, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. No trace has been found and the airline was widely criticised for its handling of the crisis.

On July 17, MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, with 298 people killed.

The airline stands on the financial brink after the disasters.

State investment fund Khazanah Nasional, which has controlled the airline for years via a 70 per cent ownership stake, said last week that it plans to buy all remaining shares and delist the company before undertaking a “complete overhaul”.

"危机就是转机" (Translation: crisis entails opportunity)

The crisis has enabled MAS an opportunity to restructure at will, without much interference from unions.

State support for job cuts boosts prospects of latest Malaysia Airlines plan

SINGAPORE - The plan to save Malaysia Airlines (MAS) could succeed where past endeavours have failed because the government has finally put politics aside by agreeing to sweeping job cuts, people briefed on the restructuring told Reuters.

The job cuts - if they are followed through - would mark a departure from previous attempts to restructure the loss-making airline, which has for years operated with bloated staff numbers amid political pressure from unions.

Under the radical $1.9 billion overhaul unveiled last week, MAS said it would shed nearly a third of its 20,000 workforce after the airline was broadsided by two jet disasters this year.

Flight MH370 remains missing since it disappeared en route to Beijing in March and MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July.

"Unfortunately, it took two crashes to make the government realise that sweeping changes were needed at MAS," said one of the people. "With the job cuts, MAS finally has a plan that has a chance of succeeding."

Both the sources declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Anxiety high at Malaysia Airlines this week as 20,000 staff await termination letters

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Anxiety is at its highest and morale lowest for the 20,000 people working for Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

It will either be tears of joy or anguish when they get their termination and re-employment letters in a matter of days.

MAS, one of the country's biggest government-linked companies (GLC), will terminate its entire workforce to start afresh as a smaller airline with a regional focus rather than international.

Mr. Christoph Mueller joined MAS on Jan 2015. He is not responsible for the mismanagement of the MAS, but a rescuer to the company.

The former CEO, Ahmad Jauhari's appointment with MAS expired last year, without renewal.
